"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" airs next week...

The Charlie Brown Halloween special apparently has its first airing on its new network, ABC (after CBS lost/gave up the rights), next Tuesday at 8 PM EST (followed by some Winnie-the-Pooh Halloween special, natch). No sign as far as I know of of when the Garfield Halloween special airs (if it hasn't aired already), or if it'll even air (recall it hadn't been aired for years at one point until recently), though that special should remain on CBS I suppose. Wonder how well ABC will treat Chuck and the gang (for this and the Christmas special, which is also airing on ABC starting this year), or if they'll even remotely consider airing the rarely-seen-these-days Thanksgiving "Peanuts" special...

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"

ABC will be showing "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" Tuesday Oct.28 at 8 pm EST.

I watched its first airing on ABC in 2001, and noticed all the "I got a rock" bits were cut out. I missed last year's broadcast, but heard that ABC replaced "I got a rock", then cut out the kicking the football scene and one with Snoopy dancing on Schroeder's piano.

So, who gets the knife this year?

Tradition is being destroyed by commercialism....(in his Charlie Brown voice) I can't stand it. I juuuuuuust can't stand it.

I usually see it on video instead of on TV, but I guess I will have to watch it on TV to see what they butchered. Hopefully they left in the part where Linus watches a pumpkin getting carved. He sounds funny when he groans like that.

I really don't understand why they think they have to cut scenes out. Crummy ABC. And that "I got a rock" quote was funny too (although it was better when "Family Guy" spoofed it, mainly because it was in such a random place).

To make more room for the commercials.

Crummy, indeed.

As Sharklady pointed out, the reason why some scenes are cut is ABC needs to fit room for commercials. That's the problem with older specials (i.e. Rudolph, a Charlie Brown Xmas): because they were made at a era when there was less time for commercials, there's likely going to be some scenes cut in order to air some unneccessary commercials (although I like ABC's idea of an hour-long Charlie Brown Xmas).

I must say, I completely agree with all the comments made here. It not only is frustrating that parts of a TV program are cut out for commercials, but it is deeply disappointing because it does reflect the "impatient" attitudes of viewers today who want images to hit them fast (instant gratification). I notice even now (believe it or not!) that some small portions of the Simpsons are cut out when I watch them (which is surprising, being that the half-hour show is not that long to begin with). Now .... as to the subject at hand .... I think this is a very good Charlie Brown special with alot of sentimental meaning.

Just curious....I was watching something else on TV at the time. Did they edit anything out of the show?

One question: is it true that this year, the special was altered by having Charlie Brown receiving Rush Limbaugh's painkillers instead of rocks?

(yes, I know it didn't happen, but I was trying to be silly)

They weren't un-pc scenes; they were just regarded as expendible. It was Charlie Brown repeatedly getting rocks and Snoopy hearkening to Schroder's piano playing.

If it had been up to me to decide what had to be cut, I'd have trimmed the 'dogfight' and 'crossing no-mans-land' sequences just a tad.
If they'd insisted on taking out much more than that, I'd quit the job.

Charlie Brown getting rocks insted of treats. Someone might complain that it's child abuse. That's what I thought when that scene was cut.

Well, at least this time, it wasn't cut, lucky for Charlie Brown... or maybe not. Rocks.

Naw; he lifted it out of the bag and it was clearly a regular ol' rock.

It is kind of a sad sequence when you stop to think about it, but definitely in-character.

CBS trimmed down the I GOT A ROCK trick or treat sequence in the 1970's.
