Banned Cow and Chicken episode
Has anybody seen the banned Cow and Chicken episode "Buffalo Gals"?. I found out about this episode a few months ago. In the episode,Cow joins a motorcycle gang, the Buffalo Gals. They drive into people's homes and then chew up their carpet. When they get to Cow and Chicken's house, Cow decides to join them. Chicken rushes off to bring her back, but ends up getting beaten up the Buffalo Gals. He is saved by Super Cow. After its first airing, the episode was pulled for supposedly supporting lesbians. Many angry viewers thought that the BGs were lesbians, because of the chewing carpet joke and because one seemed to really like Cow. So,has anyone seen this episode?

No, I haven't seen it.
That was really stupid of them to ban it. And that reason was dumb, too. So what if some peple think that there may be lesbian references?
Bugs Bunny was always kissing Elmer Fudd. Some people say that Bugs may have been gay or bisexual. So what? It's funny when he kissed Elmer, regardless of the reason for it. |

I haven't seen the episode, so I can't really make a determination one way or the other. It sounds like Cow and Chicken stretched a funny 5-second joke from South Park to some rather unfunny proportions, though. Then again, it seems like it may go over most kid's heads... maybe it would be better if this ep only aired late night. Then again, I'm not all that fond of the series, so what do I know?

Over their heads
Haven't seen it either. C&C can be funny, but not often enough.
As for an uproar about lesbian-references.... I think this just proves that (1) if you're going to censor things you shouldn't get out of the habit, and (2) if you're going to get out of the habit you shouldn't try to get back into it. Like anything, censorship -- if it is going to be indulged in, and I'm not saying it should be -- can be done well, or it can be done poorly. It's done well when the censors are flexible, and keep an eye on the overall context and not just on the little "bits" that may be objectionable. It's done badly when they have a little list of rules and prohibitions and apply them mindlessly -- the same kind of "zero tolerance" thinking that's turning schools into mini-police states where the possession of a keychain can get you expelled. Quote:
In the 1950s they still knew how to exercise censorship well. That's why "Rocky and Bullwinkle" could make a masturbation joke, and why a Tweety cartoon could contain references to "giving him the bird," and no one blinked an eye. If you got the joke you were already corrupted, and if you weren't corrupted you wouldn't even know you'd missed the joke. Nowadays, of course, we think that jokes are like germs, and you can get sick if you're even unwittingly exposed to them. And that's why you get such artless and hamhanded things like the banning of the "Frigid Hare" and the others from "June Bugs." |

They shouldn't've banned it. They could've just edited it like that golf episode.

Buffalo Gals Would You Come Out Tonight And Sneak By The Cartoon Network Censors?
