Cartoon Network, what were you thinking?!

I picked up the latest Powerpuff Girls comic book and what do I see?

Now, there's a thought. Drum up an audience for your new shows by trashing old ones. Like Bugs Bunny, who's a pretty healthy chunk of the CN programming day. Or Tom and Jerry, another major time filler. Or, for that matter, Scooby-Doo, who's on so often CN is often called the Scooby-Doo Network. When, exactly, did it seem like a good idea to destroy your own audience? What went through the admen's heads when they dreamed this campaign up, and which major fast food chain do they flip burgers for now? Is this a sign of things to come, when Daffy Duck is squeezed out for drek like Time Squad?

Bad, bad ad. Shame on you. Old shows are good. Classic cartoons are called that for a reason. You want me to watch your new stuff, tell me how good it is. Don't tell me I'm dumb for liking quality material.

That is pretty unforgiveable. You can't celebrate the present day cartoons without giving honor to that which came before. Who ever came up with that ad has no respect, and whoever decided to use it should be demoted, at least.

Reminds me of a recent article I read that said Star Blazers was dated, corny melodrama. CORNY? Buddy, that's the stuff of the 70s, man. Smell that classical air.

That's almost as unforgivable the year they inserted Cartoon Cartoons into "The 50 Greatest Cartoons Ever Made" marathon. There are some CCs I really do like, but I cringe whenever CN tries to elevate them to the same level or better as cartoons that have stood the test of time. Something CN's own programming has yet to do.

I love the Star Blazers. I am so glad it's out on DVD now.

As far as that best cartoon things...Yeah, that was pretty lame. That was just a shameless way of promoting their own crap at the time. Has anybody without an agenda compiled a list of the top cartoons of all time?

Well, how 'bout we do it here? From what I've been observing over the months, there's more than enough talent & savvy re. anything toony right here @ toonzone to go about compiling such a list. And I don't think there'd be an agenda here, would there? Gookie, the Archivist, Brainatra, Psycho Fox, bring in some of the gang from over @ Termite Terrace, we could do it. Just a thought.

Wha? That's an... odd tactic. I've never liked ads that out-and-out trash the competition, not to mention it takes an annoyingly condescending tone. I don't like.

Then again, I don't think the purpose was to trash the classics... their audience for that ad are 20-30. I think instead, they're trashing cartoons fromt he 70s and 80s. I can see that, since 98% of the cartoons made during this "dark age" of animation were utter crap.

That's a can of worms I don't want to open. It is like determining which is better: Sega or Nintendo, Coke or Pepsi, Mac or PC, McDonalds or Burger King, Mini Disc or portable MP3 player. Tring to rate every cartoon will make those who's favourite cartoon didn't do so well upset.

Kind of agree (since such lists are pretty subjective, as those AFI lists seem to prove)...though re: those few choices above, I think Burger King (or almost anywhere else) is well above McDonald's™ quality-wise ;-)

The audience for this comic would be about 8 to 12 years old, so pretty much anything from the mid-90s on back. That's a lot of good toons, amongst other things.

Who knows the CN e-mail address? I keep forgetting. I definitely want them to know what I think of this.

Well, I think it's as others said, they're just being slightly short-sighted and/or figure they're appealing to some certain age group (either one my age who *did* grow up watching the likes of "Laff-a-lympics" and the "Smurfs", or one young enough who's only known the 'toons of the past 10 years...). I think they're holding off on the "mother of all Scooby ad campaigns" for when that live-action Scooby Doo movie comes out (I'm still awaiting to see what the CGI Scooby Doo will look like...though not with anticipation...and I'm already envisioning the KWB ad campaigns promoting the Scooby Doo movie with said CGI Scoobster running about that generic CGI WB studio lot admist the Pokemon/Rescue HEroes/etc....).

Oh, and welcome to this forum, uh, bushnader666....interesting user ID name there... :-)

I think Dairy Queen has better burgers and fries than both Macdonald's and Burger King, at least in my area.

I dont' drink Diet Rite, but it seems to sell well at the grocery store, as I see it's near empty often before they get the load in from the pop company.

I will eat Wendys if I am in the area where there is one, but I don't seek one out. Dairy Queen is the only fast food I'd go out of my way to eat.

Back to the topic of this thread....

Even if they are targeting a younger audience, who is Cartoon Network to dog the cartoons these kids grew up on>

My god.

The way CN is promoting Scooby-Doo right now would be sufficient enough for promoting other cartoon to live action movie franchises.

I don't want to be near CN when the live-action SD movie is launched...or even come close to other AwOL-Time Warner owned channels.

The day this new SD movie is launced will be a day of infamy to me and millions of ther classic cartoon fans. (as well as the people who star in the movie and consequently ruin their careers )

Courage the Cowardly Dog - Why did they have to mention this show? It's depressingly one-note. I use "depressingly" because, believe it or not, the original short was nominated for an Academy Award. John R. Dilworth milked the formula dry halfway through the third or fourth episode (though there have been some good moments). If there's one thing that we can all agree on, it's this: Eustace must die.

Dexter's Laboratory - This comes close to replicating the old WB magic, but that cigar is just out of reach. One of the best CN originals, nonetheless. I can't wait for the new episodes.

Johnny Bravo - As long as they were talking about the Van Partible eps with talent the likes of Butch Hartman and Seth McFarlane, they could get away with it. But if they were talking about the awful bizarro Bravo eps...let me put it this way: If you've got the tar, I've got the feathers.
