Yu-Yu Hakusho - Ahh, Botan... ... ... ahem. Sorry.
Nice summary at the beginning, giving us plenty to go with and a reason for Yuske to even be involved in the tournament. Kuwabara's there too, hmm? Maybe we'll finally see how he gets tangled up in Spirit Hunting tonight. Genkei is an interesting character... who's her voice? She sound familiar. And she's strong enough too. Ah, video games, the ultimate test of martial arts! Oh god, not karaoke! Anything but that! Damn... nice shot Kuwabara. Of course, Yuske has to show him up. What's the second game, rock-paper-scissors? Oh, I'd rule at that one! ![]() Now, the real tests! Ahh, the old haunted forest. A classic, and well chosen test. This is a pretty nasty forest too... snakes, killer vines... gah, evil wolves. Sorry, i'm a wolf fan, so it bugs me when wolves are the villain. Oh well... oooh, evil bats. And a really nasty bat-demon to boot! Wait, Kuwabara made it first? But what are they waiting on... and Yuske's still fighting. Heh, he did a good job. Too bad he ran the time limit, but he seems lucky enough to keep getting 'exceptions'. I like the argument about getting hugged... very macho teen-ager reaction. Not a bad episode!Cowboy Bebop - Ahhh, Heavy Metal Queen. An interesting filler episode. The enigmatic VT plays a big part here, and her hatred for bounty hunters is quite pronounced. I would go into more detail, but I'm getting a headache... suffice to say, it's entertaining. Will write more another time. Pilot Candidate - Hmmm. This one actually moved the plot forward. It's a miracle. Some really nice interaction between Zero and Artz. A... well, interesting battle scene with the Victims. Why the heck was that guy hanging onto the leader, and where did the explosions come from? I really missed that part, somehow. I'm not surprised Artz became a pilot, considering his obvious skill and importance to the series. What's the girl referring to in the casket scene? Yes, Earnest kept Galoo from rushing in, but... keeping 'that person' from risking their life? *sigh* More questions that'll never get answered... oh well.Gundam 0083 - Dear god... Unit 02's firepower is unbelievable! Nice action all around this episode, though of course we have the neurotic relationship going on at the beginning again. Bedtime...

Yu-Yu Hakusho: Was a good episode,it got right on to the story and was funny in some parts. And my favorite part is where the old lady use her power to throw those two goons to th door.
Btw did anybody notice the street fighter look alikes on the show? Cowboy Bebop - Coming up! Pilot Candidate - Coming up! Gundam 0083 - Coming up! |

Yu Yu Hakusho: Yusuke must infiltrate a training camp as a student under the control of Genkai. There he must pass a series of tests to earn the right to learn the knowledge of the sprirt wave fighting technique all in the process of subduing a demon who is eager to achieve the same fighting technique among a handful of mortals with high spirit energy levels including Yusuke's rival, Kuwabara, who are also eager to learn the technique which could heal or even take life away itself. A good episode with maybe a big turning point for the character known as Kuwabara.
Pilot Candidate: Plenty of action in this episode but now there seems to be a opening for a goddess pilot position as one of the active goddess pilots loses thier life in battle. I guess that's why we have pilot candidates. Well, where else did you think this series was going? Gundam 0083: This episode had some really good space battles. Unit 2 makes a entrance and engages the main Federation military fleet from behind while all of the Federation mobile support is off engaging a Zeon decoy. I guess that wasn't too bright of the Federation leaving themselves open like that. Of course you can't forget the amount of firepower that the stolen Unit 2 is equiped with. Overall this was a good episode.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Yayy, Kuabara returns. Nothing to complain about here except that I would of liked to see more of the girl with the blue hair (don't remember her name) and the little "Jr." guy. OVerall grade: B+
Cowboy bebop: To be honest, I didn't think this episode was as good as the others. Faye gets better and better, but everything else seemed mediocre. I didn't like VT too much, and the usual action was there so I liked it but I call it the weakest episode so far. Next week looks awesome though. Overall grade : B- Pilot Candidate: I still can't get into this show. More unexplained stories, more bad dubbing, more slow scenes (alhtough this one seemed to have more action), and nothing really interesting storyline wise. Next weeks episode could be interesting if it doesn't drag. The only thing saving this show from a F grade is the good animation (less CGI=better animation). Overall grade: D

YYH: i love this episode! hehe, did anyone notice a Zangief, Dhalsim and E. Honda look alikes?
and an interesting tidbit, do you guys know about an anime called Hunter x Hunter? its done by the same guy who did YYH, well anyway, the characters had to take the "hunter Exam" to be hunters, and guess what, they had to do the exact same thing. bebop: good, not one of my favorite bebop episodes PC: believe it or not, one of my favorite episodes of PC, becuase someone dies hehe

I did notice The Street Fighter characters.
Back in 1992 when the Yu Yu Hakusho was made. Street fighter was really popular. So the cameo makes sense.

Linda Chambers Young who voiced Freiza in DBZ is the voice of Genkai. Glad to see the positive reviews of this episode. Things only get even better!

Yu Yu Hakusho: When I saw the preview for this episode last week I was quite dissappointed. Coming off 3 rather lousy episodes, it looked like this episode would be like one of those tournament intro eps in DBZ. You know, the ones that take a week just to figure out the fight match ups. Anyway, was very glad to see that it was nothing like that. The second 'trial' was rather interesting, don't you think?
As for Genki, she's voiced by a very famous voice, the old lady who did Freeza in DBZ. Amazingly enough, it wasn't that dissappointing. Unlike in DBZ, the voice actually fit the character. Now I just hope that tough guy in this ep doesn't end up being Rando, way too predictable if he is.Grade: B Cowboy Bebop: My second least favorite episode in the series after Wild Horses. Just like last week's ep though, that doesn't make it bad by any means. There's a lot to like in this episode. V.T.'s a rather likeable character, and has a great dub voice too. Seeing Spike with a hangover is hilarious. So is the interaction between the 3 on the Bebop, with Faye and Spike acting like whining 'kids' while Jet's the 'father' The designs for the 'truckers' was very ingenous. What didn't I like? The bounty for this ep was a rather lame bounty, worst in the series outside of those punks in the previously mentioned episode. Yep, you guessed right, I'm not a very big Woody Allen fan. What this episode suffers from the most is that it simply can't compare with the 20+ amazing episodes in the series. When you've got a show with so many 'A' eps, a 'B' like this unfortunately plays second fiddle. With 2 of the lesser quality eps out of the way in this run, we now have well over a month of nothing but great eps. Grade: B+ Pilot Candidate: Waah! The blond haired Ingrid pilot died! Waah! This was so predictable that I saw it coming 3 episodes ago! So was the fact that his brother would become a replacement. Thats the problem with using the word 'Candidate' in your title, you know there's gonna be a reason for that sooner or later. Another week passes with another extremely lame designed VILLAIN. 3 episodes left and there's still no point to this show. Grade: F Gundam 0083: This episode had a nice tie back to the original with Solomon/Konpei Island. Nice fleshing out of the characters in this ep, and glad to see the plot moving again after it being slow for a few eps. Grade: B+ Outlaw Star: This episode has its good parts, but it also has its bad. We finally get to see our first grappler battle in the series, which while against rather lame villains, is a pretty good one. The scene with Gene and Mel is nice, although too short. Unfortunately too much time in this episode is wasted with that lame bald pirate and the Outlaw Star taking off. One more ep to go before we start getting to good stuff. Grade: C+ Tenchi Muyo: Proving yet again that there is no true 'filler' in the original Tenchi OVA, this one fleshes out Sasami/Tsunami after only softly touching on it earlier in the series. Good stuff, the second OVA truly shines. Grade: B+ A much better night than I expected thanks to the surprising quality of YYH. Overall Grade: B-

*******************************************
Adult Swim Action Review (4/20/02) By: Ravenger(ravenger@dark-revelation.com) Ok, its time from my review. Hopefully I can get through it with out annoying or forgetting any visiting VA's. So sit back and enjoy the review after watching Adult Swim. ******************************************* The Search Begins YES! Kuwabara is back! Ahem... anyway... this episode features Yuskue's continued service as a Spirit Detective to prevent a demon from getting the power of Genkei(who does sound like DBZ's Frieza... I like last week could be wrong so I hope I'm not, me and my pesky "Sounds like this character" game but at least this time I have people who agree with me =p), the most powerful psychic in the world. An interesting character to say the least... a more quiet non evil character. The tests are interesting to say the least... a draw to see who has high amounts of spirt energy, video games to test the spirit energy further and a quest through a dark forest. This episode was as usual... action packed and funny all of this time. It was a good level episode that had everything. Can't wait to see the tournament in the next episode. Score: 10 Heavy Metal Queen This is kind of a filler. The gang is after a bounty who's specialty is explosives and get mixed up with a cargo pilot who hates bounty hunters. Sounds like fun. This is a nice action packed episode right from the start with some fighting and explosions... its really great. Later on we have Spike and the pilot having a little confentation over bounty hunting but ends up hitching a ride with her because his ship got wrecked by some guys who attacked her and Spike. But she returns the favor by giving Spike and crew info their bounty. In the end they don't catch him but thats not half as bad as the trouble they get into after. While the action isn't as intense as some episode... its there.. but the real story on this episode is the in-depth of characters stories and attitudes. Not the most critical episode of the lot but one that can carry its own weight. Score: 8 Doom Wow... I usually don't give Pilot Candidate the most stellar reviews but this episode shall not be like the last. This episode had an impressive impact on watching it. Not really plot developing but thats something that can for once be overlooked. Now... what happens here is the Victim attack Zion and of course the Goddess pilots go out to stop them. But what happens during the battle is the real story as one of the pilots ends up sacrificing his life to save everyone. His brother(that senior cadet kid with Zero) could feel it as well and it has him shaken up due to his psychic ability. This was just a heavy connected episode not only to the characters but the viewers as well. This was something that finally set apart from Pilot Candidate's overall attitude. Score: 7 Nightmare of Solomon After last weeks Gundam, I hope that there is something that'll top out last weeks episode. This is no exception. In this episode we see the aftermath of last weeks episode with Kou promoted to Lt. j.g and becoming a better pilot all the time. We also get some insight into the conspericy of the Delaz Fleet and the Fedi Naval Review. But have no fear... there is action abound. The second half shows Gato's sinister plot against the Federal Forces fleet. After blasting through the actually well placed Fedi defences, Gato takes the Gundam GP-02 into the area formally known as Solomon only to take to the offenceive. This episodes end had just the same impact on me as last weeks. It was action packed and emotion filled... as is almost every episode of Gundam. I still can't wait for next week... its just so suspenseful. Score: 9 Forced Departure This may not be my favorite episode of Outlaw Star but there is some action involved here. Last week we had an injured Gene after fighting the pirates. This week... Gene gets healed up and is ready for a fight. The pirates still continue their bid on capturing the Outlaw Star. After taking down the pirates once and for all... Gene decides to blast out off and get out of Sentinal III. But thats not all as the pirates have sent more ships to take the Outlaw Star. This episode was mostly action... nothing really important to the plot excpet for Gene leaving Sentinal but who doesn't like action. =p I really like the action but without any real plot devlopment... it just takes the place of filler... like most action packed DBZ episodes that have no point. =p Edits here were fairly useless aside from the Melfina edits. It was refreshing to hear the word gun when refuring to the grappler arm weapons but thats about it... the rest of the edits just over shadow it. Toonami Score: 8 Adult Swim Score: 5 Sasami and Tsunami This isn't the most action packed episode.... or interesting. Well at least its kinda funny. It follow Tenchi and crew being invited back to the place they were at before.... and destroyed. They were forced to work on the place however. There is some entertainment value somewhat... and its kinda funny. But not really plot realated but it does eventually go into character development... Sasami's character. It is mostly an origin story about how Sasami is Tsunami and what is behind it. An intesting story... but not really captivating. It is interesting and then it turns funny and odd... much like most of Tenchi. Some people enjoy this episode more then I do but I guess I'm to easily distracted. As far as edits go... this probably for the most part would have went unedited except for Ryoko's digital bikini and stuff for time. Toonami Score: 7 Adult Swim Score: 4 Final Comments: Well as time went on... so did the quality of the Adult Swim Action block. While Yu-Yu Hakusho is the new king of the block, we have Bebop keeping it real, Gundam and Pilot Candidate pulling their weight and Outlaw Star and Tenchi kinda just taking up space(at least not totally useless space). I guess someone from CN's advertising department read my rant since I didn't see a AOL commerical this week... just a lot of ads for WWF Backlash(which I could live with... I guess). Well... time to get on with everything else. Thats all folks... hope you enjoyed my review and Adult Swim. =-)

YYH: This episode was better than last week's because it showed more character interaction. It was an enjoyable episode all the way through, and there isn't much one can say about it.
A- CB: An excellent episode with hints of humor intertwined in it. (The eel tatoo. Hahaha.) This is probably the 1st episode where the viewer finds out that Spike does have a personal moral code (what he did with VT's money). I think this is the episode where people find out how complicated Spike is, and that he is not just a money seeking, hard***** bounty hunter. PC: Eight episodes in and something finally happens! This is the 1st episode w/ a real plot, the 1st episode w/ drama, and the 1st episode where Zero's character has expanded beyond just annoying. Altough Zero's character change was adrupt, the unfortunate events in the episode made up for it. (I'm easily won over by things like that.) B+ (Some people may disagree w/ me on this, but if PC keeps up with plots as good as this one, it might actually be a decent show.)

As a Slacker, It is my duty to be brief
Yu Yu: I have loved Every episode and this one hadme torn between the "Root for the Good Guy" effect, and the ROFL Effect.... I LOVE IT! CB: Eh, I'm just waiting for Cowboy funk... otherwise the thrill is gone... (No doubt a year after they pull it, I'll have a hankering for CB) Pilot Candidate: WOW, they CAN do something interesting... I wonder if they can make it two in a row next week. G 0083 SM: I really like this show. (*Note: The Z-MAN loves long complicated stories, and sees all of the MSG UC series as one story) And this one delivers.... Although I was cursing their idiocy for attempting the doctrine of Concentration of Force against an Enemy with a Force Multipling Weapon of Mass Destruction. But that's just the Military Historian in me... (Yes, lets get all of our ships into a position where the enemy can destroy our fleet with a weapon WE KNOW he has.)AND leave the rest of the System Unguarded except for One Pegasus Class (mark 2) Assault Carrier and what ever got left behind (most likely the crappiest units). OS, and Tenchi... I decided that rather and watch these, AGAIN, (warn me if they're going to show the bikini ep), I'd try out my new Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast Game. It was a good choice.Rising sun... well, that's not adult swim, but it's fun to see those older B:TAS episodes... I miss that artistic style. What happened to Brief? It got lost in the foolish military tactic from 0083. *UPDATE: The new layout of the buttons (edit, reply, etc) freaks me out... They're just Sooo tiny.

Gundam 0083 and Outlaw Star seemed average tonight. Now that Gene and the crew have launched, it should pick up again. And it looks like we are in for a big fight in next weeks episode. Overall grade for both shows: B
Tenchi Muyo: Seemed a little weak this week. The whole Tsunami thing was very strange, and everything else seemed like the basic episodes (not that it was bad or anything). Overall grade: B- This week's ASA didn't seem as good as last weeks. It looks like each show (even Pilot Candidate) is in the mist of a big change next week so ASA for next Saturday is looking good.

YYH: This was a pretty entertaining episode. Linda Chambers Young fits the role of Genkai quite nicely. The second "test" was pretty amusing (don't touch the others! They're mine!
), but I wanted to see Yusuke and Kuwabara try their hand at karaoke. I also got a kick out of what Yusuke did to that bat-demon. ![]() Grade: B CB: One of the weaker episodes. I found VT to be kind of annoying. That waitress was pretty funny, though. ![]() Grade: A- PC: Something actually happened and it managed to catch my interest for a while! But as usual, it falls short for the most part. When it tries to get poetic, it still becomes annoying as crap. And is there a single person in this entire show that isn't mentally insane in some way or another? Also, the Victims continue to be some of the worst CG in the show. They all have a very low frame rate and look extremely out of place. And why do they all look like chew toys? On the plus side, I find myself liking the designs of the main Goddess (the one with the "wings") and the red one (kind of reminds of the Nu Gundam). The other ones are pretty ugly, though. Grade: C 0083: This was the best episode yet! Gato finally goes back into action after his long absence and what a comeback it is! As always, we get some spectacular MS action scenes. I hope you were paying attention, because Axis will play a crucial role in Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack. Also, I think this marks the only time a major character from the primary Gundam storyline makes a cameo appearance in a side story (unless you count Giren's broadcast in 08th MS). The girl with pink hair who was starring out the window was Haman Karn and she'll be a major player in Zeta and ZZ. Can't wait for next week's episode! Grade: A |

Wow, another night of action and suspense...
Yu Yu Hakuso: I really had fun with this episode. Loved seeing Yusuke and Kuwabara compete, and especially liked seeing those two hug each other at the end. This episode had lots of action and it went by too quickly. Have it on tape and will probably watch it again today (just for smiles). YYH is quickly becoming a "must see" on my TV schedule. Also, my attention did not (not even for a second) drift somewhere else during this show!!!!! Rating: A Cowboy Bebop: Once again, magic illuminated through my television at 11:30 last night. Entertaining episode, not too deep, and had lots of action. Held my attention very well. Laughed during the scene with Faye finding out who really has the dragon tattoo, and not the purty eel. Was it just me, or did the dragon tattoo guy look like Woody Allen? Also laughed at when the waitress informed Spike of his ship's condition. Grade: B+, A- Pilot Candidate: Wow, I was really shocked by this episode! Finally, some action. Lots of action. Action between; Instructor and Zero (!child abuse!), Zero and that senior cadet, and the Goddesses fighting those alien things. But, alas, I am still confused with almost everything that is going on. I left the show saying, "Why couldn't the blonde hair dude let go? What is the deal with the EX thing and the Goddesses? ...." But, the suspense did keep my attention, and during the ceremony, I found myself saluting the fallen pilot. Also, Baloo (spell?) used the word "darn" instead of other bad d-words. I admire him for keeping his lang. soo clean while in such a stressful situation. Fun episode though, very serious! Rating: B Gundam 0083: I also enjoyed this episode. Nothing much that I want to point out except...very suspenseful and very action packed. Rating: A- Outlaw Star: Ok, I did not watch this for one condition... TOO much action for one day. You see, I saw The Scorpion King last night. My predictions were right about a spin-off from a sequel (Wait for it to come out on the DVD or VHS). That movie was solely action. And after YYH, CB, PC, and 0083, I had my fill of action. So I (intentionally) missed this show. Tenchi Muyo!: Hey, some very calm laughter! Just sat back and relaxed with this ep. Really chuckled much!!! This was a lol episode. Just fun, that is all. A nice way to calm down and end the night. Yes, there was some drama and insight into Susami, but, I enjoyed the humor most of all. This episode made me rediscover what I love about the Tenchi series, some low key humor. Will miss it dearly if it is kicked off ASA. Rating: A Overall Night Rating: A-, A EDIT: I had to fix a spelling error, spelt Muyo wrong... *sniff* (I am soo embarrassed) |

Yu Yu Hakusho: A pretty good episode. No complaints, no oustandingly good parts either. B+.
Cowboy Bebop: You broke my egg. I needed that egg. B. Pilot Candidate: Wow. SOMETHING ACTUALLY HAPPENED! It still wasn't a good episode, but at least they're DOING stuff now. C-. Gundam 0083: Oh wow. The ending of this ep was incredible. I love the GP-02 more now than before. It's a shame that it'll only take one shot like that, though. A+. |
