What should be on AS- NOT like the other threads. I promise
So far all the other threads about possible future AS shows have been about shows that already exist. You know, what anime you wanna see, cancelled sitcom, etc. This means we here a lot about Trigun and Clerks, but here, I'm talking about what shows you want to see on AS that haven't even been created. Maybe your own original concept, maybe something after a book or movie, just as long as it hasn't been animated in some form already. Me, as random as this might sound, I would like to see a Lord of the Flies miniseries. I always thought it would rock in animation give the right art direction

Monty Python cartoon show
If any of you ever witnessed any of the Monty Python movies, computer games, or television shows, you would know that they had a strange, twisted, and unique style of animation. Maybe the animators could make a show using that kind of animation. It would be funny and extremely raunchy (things I like). The show could have a few consistent characters that, on every episode, would visit new places.
My vision of the show would be based around a group of tourists, (the stereotypes of tourists that other countries think we americans are...fat, load, rude, camera hanging off our necks, husband in hawaiian shirt,....). And every week, they visit another place, and they get robbed, attacked, stoned, sprayed by grapefruits, fish-slapped.... The dialogue will be funny too, like Sealab 2021 dialogue. DONT Forget, it would be strange and twisted. Like in one scene, the guy is standing there, and all of a sudden, his mouth opens and a whale comes out and starts swimming around in the air. This show is be very hard to explain. Just go watch some Monty Python stuff... you will understand. |

I sorta talked about this in some thread a few weeks ago, but I'd really like to see a slightly more serious, serial animated show. It could take place in a small town, an Anywhere, USA type of place, and would be populated by a bunch of interesting, unique characters.
Each show would focus on a different character, and would show "their story." The unifying element would be the atmospheric setting of the town, which would be a sort of depressed and defeatist attitude disguised under a false image of middle America happiness (what can I say, I'm a sucker for depressing stories). Then, as the show progressed, we would see characters that were the primary focus of a previous episode reapear in a smaller role. This way, the small town feeling is expressed, and we get to see how the characters have progressed over the period of a few episodes.

Mighty Max was barely a kids show. They dealt very heavily with death in that and was a legitimate great cartoon....except that horrible ice aliens episode.
Anyway I'd LOVE to see a Johnny the Homicidal Maniac cartoon minus one thing, and I know I'll be blasted for it,but minus the comedy. It always angere dme in the JTHM book that when it was really heavy, really emotional, all that crap he'd just bust out into comedy.Like when Johnny is having a converstaion with himself (I forget which chapter but it ends with him saying "I don't like myself") it's really great writing except Jhonen throws in little crap like he puts in candy corn and points it out or one part has Johnny kicking a table and says "**** **** AND OTHER EXPLITIVES!" completely ruining the emotion of the scene.Jhonen would be better off without the comedy a lot of time. Back on topic Grrl Scouts would be awesome too but the heavy drug use would probably be a problem. Sandman would be so damn perfect but they'd need a budget.Preacher would suffer from the same problems. |

Actually Shnay, it's funny, but I do a flash animated series as part of my school's film club that is kinda like what you describe. It follows the exploits of the sophomore class at a fictional Catholic high-school in Austin, Texas. Appropriately titled "Wise Fools" (one of the translation from the latin word "sophomores"), it essentially works like this: Each episode, a basic topic is introduced (such as stress, working, romance, etc.), and for the rest of the episode, we series of vignettes each dealing with that topic, each according to that theme, involving different students and faculty members. For example, the first episode is titled "Off the Deep End" (from the Jimmie Vaughan song), and deals with one particularly work-loaded week (a barrage of tests, projects, and homework), and for a while, the "camera" follows one student as he discusses the work at his locker, then cuts to someone up at 2 AM working on a project, etc. The basic progression is taken from Richard Linklater's "Slacker" film (Linklater directed the Sealab-spoofed "Waking Life" for anyone interested). I'm pretty proud of the show, and although it's essentially a comedy, it involves the deeper plight of high-schoolers without being angsty or relying on earth-shattering plot twists. It's also got kick-ass music. Anyway...uh yeah, I'd like to see my show on AS too, just like Matt.

I'd like to see an anthology series, either horror, sci-fi, or both on the same show. It would be great to see Adult Swim extend its self outside of just comedy and action

That sounds really great, randomguy. Our school doesn't have anything nearly as cool. I'd love to be able to create something, but I'm still searching for a medium I don't suck at.
Also, two semi-related notes: Slacker was brilliant. I almost tore my hair out when some second rate teen comedy came out this year and was called "Slackers." Ugh... Also, regarding the "depressing small town setting" I was describing earlier: I've passed through some "average small towns" (and live in one as well) and despite their happy, Americana appearence, these are some of the most depressing places I've ever seen. I think a sci-fi/horror animated show could be very cool. Imagine a "Twilight Zone" type of show but with graphic or fantastic (depending on the scene) animation. EDIT: Although this could never happen (though when has that ever stopped us?) I think Megatokyo (if anyone reads it) could make a very cool show. Ignoring all the things that make this impossible, I think at the least it would be "interesting." And it could very well be made into a great show.

This may sound strange but I would love to see a really well done, adult aimed sherlock holmes type series. It wouldnt be your standard kids show where stuff is obvious but the viewer would actully have to think logically to solve things before they wrapped it up towards the end of the episode or even made episodes two parts so you would have time to gather the facts in your head and figure things out. Sherlock Holmes was a really great book series and seeing somthing with quality animation but aimed towards adults and not kids would be very fun and interesting to see.

We discussed an ASD before. Here are my suggestions for the block.
Anime Kare Kano (once it's released) EVA (maybe action though) To Heart Berserk (when released, once again, maybe action, but the editing would probably make it impossible) Ranma 1/2 (maybe comedy) Inu Yasha (once it's released, this one could actually be on any opf the 3 blocks) Maison Ikkoku X (once it's released) New shows A serious Jhonen show Daria repeats/new season, but that may be comedy Sandman Preacher (both would need some budgets) |

We do a film festival every year with student produced features and shorts, all live action cept for me (and I do some Live action stuff too). I've dropped "Wise Fools" temporarily to focus on a full-length animated movie. I'm really proud of it's premise and what-not, so proud that I'm actually gunning to get it shown at the 2003 SXSW film festival in Austin, which is only THE biggest film festival in America. Anyhow, I'd reccomend you keep on searching Shnay. If you're a big animation fan, you should try taking some classes. I say this just because talking with you and seeing what an adamant film fan you seem to be, and how good and thoughtful your series idea is, I think you could potentially do some really awesome stuff. You just strike me as a "creator"-type, y'know. If all else fails, take a basic film class. All it takes to do live action stuff is editing knowledge and practice holding the camera- no actual aesthetic ability needed! Anyway, search, search like your life depends on it! Quote:

There's an independent comic I love called Athena. It's a futuristic story where the Greek Pantheon is real, and they've been downsized to make room for the "new" batch of gods and goddesses. Hermes is a psychotic bus driver, Hermaphrodite is a stripper, Dionysus is a boozed-up bisexual nightclub owner, and Athena herself is a foul-mouthed punk rocker. It has drama, comedy, action, and surprisingly tender and realistic characterization. It could translate very well into an Adult Swim show, and they could easily make thirteen half-hour episodes based on the two volumes...

Most of these are based on comics and would be best as a special, not a series. They would also be very toned down from their comic counterparts.
Action Girl (Sarah Dryer) Acme Novelty Library or Jimmy Corrigan(Chris Ware) Love and Rockets (Hernandez Bros.) Other Dork strips (Evan Dorkin) Eightball or other Dan Clowes stuff Jhoen Stuff. Lenore (Roman Drige)
