Pretty Cure and Ojamajo Doremi's Status Information

Well, looks like Firecrouch came through to me on the request. So I thank him on this. I had made a post about him asking the status for both shows, and well... Here's the information.

Quote:
Hey, I know this isn't "One Piece" related but someone requested on this thread that I ask about this at the Toei Animation booth.

The status of "Pretty Cure" and "Magical Doremi"? Well, it's the same old sad story for "Pretty Cure": Toei Animation is trying to pitch it to American broadcasters (speaking of which I checked out the T.V. pilot in one of the screening rooms of AX and it's a pretty damn awesome dub) but no luck so far. Why? American broadcasters still don't want girls' cartoons.

And "Magical Doremi"? Well, form what I can tell when I talked to one of the representatives it seems they're pretty much done with it.
This information does suggust that 4Kids Entertainment doesn't have Pretty Cure. For that matter, it seems Toei's been wanting to market it themself, but having no luck on the matter.

As for Ojamajo Doremi... In a way, I'm kind of happy to see Ojamajo Doremi won't be continued by 4Kids. Though, judging from Firecrouch's post, it doesn't look like it'll be continued in the US either. That in it's self is disapointing.

Well, there you have it. Again, thankyou Firecrouch.

I'm just hoping that, even if Toei can't get anyone at all to broadcast it, that they can put Pretty Cure on DVD through Illumitoon.

So it sounds like they're going the Bo-Bobo route which supposedly Digimon Data Squad will also be doing. It's such a shame US television simply doesn't accept shoujo. Come on CN, take a chance on PreCure!

They'd cancel Naruto before they do that.
Hahahaha.
I'm not a big Shoujo guy. Let alone magic girl series.
I'll take me some Watase or Ai Yazawa any day though.

Literal translations certainly are interesting reads.

Do I take it to mean that Pretty Cure is communist?

The guy who I talked to about "Pretty Cure" said something along those lines . When we were done talking he smiled and told me to get Cartoon Network to put "Pretty Cure" on Toonami.

I actually just thought of something. "Shin-Chan" got a test-run before being officially picked up for T.V., you think CN would be willing to do the same for "Pretty Cure"?

Well they sorta gave trial runs to MÄR and PoT as well.

I say if they'll pick up something like Bo-Bobo then they should be willing to try Pretty Cure. It really never made sense as to why they stopped getting shoujo anime. Sailor Moon did pretty well IIRC and Card Captors didn't really bomb either. Pretty Cure has lots of action so it should have at least been sellable to Miguzi if not Toonami.

Sailor Moon did pretty bad/medicore, actually. If the article I read was right

"Despite the series' apparent popularity among Western anime fandom, the dubbed version of the series received poor ratings in the United States and did not do well in DVD sales in the United Kingdom."

It seems girl cartoons are a lost cause in America.. I can't see Toonami bothering.

I have never heard of or seen any proof "Sailor Moon" did badly here. Everything I've seen and heard points to success. Pretty much all other shoujo, however, hasn't been so lucky here, whether it's been badly localized or just not appealing enough.

I talked about this with the Toei Animation guy, and the shoujo anime that needs to be on American T.V. right now are shows that appeal to both boys and girls. "Sailor Moon" had the aesthetic ability to do that better than any other shoujo I've seen. If boys can look past what I sometimes thought was overbearingly cute, "Pretty Cure" might just be that gateway shoujo anime

I think when Sailor Moon went to CN, it did alright, but not a smashing success like DBZ, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, or Outlaw Star. I heard it was much more popular in Canada, more than DBZ.

Firecrouch, since you saw the pilot, did you recognize any of the voices and did it use the original music?

I didn't recognize any of the voices, but the original music is there. They even left the opening and ending untouched.

The only time I ever heard it was a success was from the fan community, which I tend to take with a grain of salt. The article I mentioned was written by a woman who studies Japanese culture and its impact in the US, so I'll believe her. Sailor Moon was never the talk of my school compared to, say, Power Rangers.

I haven't read anywhere either that SM did bad here in america (actually your the first person EVER that I heard that said SM bombed in the west), I mean I know the dub wasn't superb but it was the 90s/early 2000s and there weren't alot of good dubs out there yet at the time. If it matters, most people I know that don't watch a lot of anime, but watched Toonami regulary at some point in the early childhood remember Sailor Moon more so than the most of the other Toonami (besides DBZ and it's sequels) animes.

I dunno. When I was in elementary school, I remember some kids being excited for the "lost" 17 episodes of Sailor Moon R, so I think it did alright. Now, if she was talking about syndication(before CN), then yeah, it wasn't popular. That's why DiC didn't dub the last 17 episodes of R until it gained popularity when it hit Toonami and YTV.

If I had to compare it to another show today, I would compare it to One Piece. OP didn't do well on 4Kids TV, but once it hit Toonami, it did much better.

Yea I think it was because it was shown in the early hours of the day in syndication so that's why it wasn't so popular in the beginning.
