Dexter & Monkey - Barbequor

Does anyone know why Barbequor was banned? What was it about, what was the single complaint that caused it to be removed, and, most importantly, can I download it anywhere?

I'd also love to see Dexter's Rude Removal, but I doubt there's any chance I'd ever find that one.

Here's the answer

I don't know where I heard that from, but I heard that Genndy Tartakovsky (Creater and Producer of Dexter's Laboratory) got too many letters about the Barbquor is a complete rip-off of one of Genndy's favorite Marvel comic book, The Silver Surfer. To save him some trouble he decided to get the episode off the air immediately. Maybe the reason we never going to see Justice Friends on the new episodes of Dexter's Laboratory this fall.

According to the FAQs on Paul Senior's DL site - "a single letter of complaint" was the reason it was pulled.

http://fn2.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/~planet23/dexter.htm

My guess is the one viewer took offense to a male character that was portrayed as having stereotypically gay traits.

What was it about
It was a very funny parody of Silver Surfer, which as I understand it is Genndy's favorite comic.

Here's a description from Paul Senior's site:

It's Monkey's birthday, all the Justice Friends are giving him a party in the park. Everyone is having a riot when the party is broken up by Barbequor, eater of worlds, who plans to have Earth-on-a-stick for lunch. Spacewing Alpha and all the Justice Friends are no match for the miles-high monster, who skewers the Earth, covers it with sauce and ingests it. Monkey saves the day by grabbing the Silver Spooners spoon and making Barbequor puke with it. Earth avoids ingestion! Later, Monkey drives Krunk home. Jack Kirby rules!
Shining Moment: "Judy Garland? Where!?"

I doubt it, but you might try asking on alt.tv.cartoon-network or rec.arts.animation

I taped it when it first aired, but I have no way to make a copy for you right now.

Yes, very doubtful. I'd like to see it too. There have been inquiries about it on both rec.arts.animation and alt.tv.cartoon-network, but somehow, even in this era where everything can be bootleged and uploaded to the web, the creators have managed to keep exclusive ownership over it. It was shown at the San Diego Comic-con, I believe. And only that one time.

Doubtful. It was free game for parody, and a very funny one at that. I can't see any other reason why someone would take offense to it other than the gay thing. Comic fans (especially those of Silver Surfer and Jack Kirby's work) probably loved it, and took it as an homage as well. It was very well done.

Thanks, it probably was edited for that reason, Gookie, especially since I know The Tick also did a parody of the same story. Plus, Monkey has done a few other parodies as well, which still air. "Rasslor" is very similar to a story from a Marvel comic featuring Fantastic Four's Thing.

Too bad it's not shown anymore. I wonder how CN responds to comments on Him?

More often than not, it gets shown at Spike's Animation Festival (?), which I've never been to. On that one occasion that Craig and Genndy were the featured guests at the LA Comic Convention, it was shown then. Not too certain with regards to SDCC (which I'll have to start planning for this year's).

Well, they didn't show it at last year's Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation at the SD con. I should know - I was there. The only short I enjoyed was Don Hertzfeldt's "Rejected". The rest of 'em were just...well, sick and twisted.

Hello again! Remember me?

I'd like to see "Dexter's Rude Removal" too, maybe they will put it on that "Adult Swim" bloick someday (if all it has is mild swearing, it can't be any worse that crummy "Sealab 2021" (which CN showed once EXTREMELY late at night). Of course, with all the June Bugs (if we show those cartoons, we could lose merchandise money) hulabaloo, we most likely will never see it.

I like the superhero parodies, as well as the others seen in "Dexter's Lab," they are really quite funny and well executed, better than the "Tom and Jerry" parody, "Mom and Jerry"," which I really didn't care for (seemed like more of a parody of the mediochre Chuck Jones cartoons).

What is "Dexter's Rude Removal" about and why was it banned? I remember reading it had to do with swearing or something. Thanks!

Well, it isn't really banned. It was an in-house project done just for the amusement of the staff. It had swearing, the finger, and mooning. It's been shown at a few conventions, but I haven't seen it. It's never been on TV and was never intended to be. But that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be.
