More Powerpuff Girls Episode Comments...

Went to the video store again tonight to return the "Beat-Alls" tape and to rent a few other videos. Getting there, though, I find that thanks to Thanksgiving weekend and/or the 99-cent coupons they were giving away, literally everything was either in a disarray and/or was gone...Shrek, "Grinch Stole Christmas", you name it, they were out of it. Including a few of the other PPG videos they had....the only one left was "Dream Scheme", which is what I rented and just finished watching. Episodes included: "Dream Scheme", "Just Another Manic Mojo", "Mo Job", "Down 'n Dirty", and "Major Competition". Box art: the front shows the girls smacking the Sandman with pillows, while the back shows them beating up on Him (wonder why they included this artwork, when Him doesn't appear in any of the cartoons on the tape...):

"Dream Scheme": An OK entry, with interesting animation for the Sandman's nightmare sequence...

"Just Another Manic Mojo": Probably one of the funniest ones on the tape. The whole thing could've been an A! episode with the Warners harassing someone pointlessly... liked Mojo's trip to the grocery store, his morning routine, and the whole bit with the girls (trying to make them stop touching his stuff/stay still). That, and the title of the ep alone made me chuckle. And of course, lots of Mojo repeating himself in a repetitive and therefore redundant manner.... ;-)

"Mo Job": Fairly amusing (especially the bit with Mojo's pretend-fear-of-the-Girls'-heroic-arrival). And I suppose this episode also demonstrated to me a range of their Superman-style set of powers (heat vision, super-speed, super-breath, "thunder clap", super-speed-friction [and I've seen Superman do the "static electricity" thing in a 70's-era comic once, though he was under storm clouds at the time], super-hearing, all within the Man of Steel's usual capacities as well....).

"Down 'n Dirty": Another OK, if somewhat grossout-ish entry....

"Major Competition": "Major Man".....heh. Agree with the girls that it's not much of a name...though from the looks of him, he probably spent more time buying steroids/hitting the gym a bit *too* often or something. Noticed the talking dog and the George Jetson-lookalike guy...

Skipped viewing the "Sheep in the Big City" cartoon included on the tape (after seeing a few seconds of it)...no real "extras" on this tape like there was for the "Beat-Alls" one (CN promos, etc.)....

-B.
Wonders if Mojo should've just had cereal or some bananas or something for breakfast....that, or coffee...

One more thing...

Unrelated to the video I watched, but there's apparently an ad running locally around here (for the Indianapolis Colts football team) that plays a song with the lyrics "got my mojo burning/going"(a song by John Lee Hooker?), and the title "unleash your mojo" on the screen, with accompanying imagery of their current mascot, the "Touchdown Monkey", a little blue monkey....no giant brain-covering turbans or repetitive speech dialects seen, though :-)

"Just Another Manic Mojo" is one of my favorites, as it shows Mojo at his overblown best. Especially the way he slowly draws out "curses" after rapidly going on about how two eggs are necessary for a nutritional breakfast. In fact, this is the ep that really sold me on the Powerpuffs.

But you're right, it could easily have been an A! episode, with Mojo playing the role of the "special friend."

'Manic Mojo' is one of my most-appreciated eps, too; plenty of screen-time and dialogue for my favorite cartoon villain (I'm endlessly amused by the way he says a line like "'Tag'?! What kind of foolishness is this??") We even get a glimpse of how cute he was as an infant, tho I have to wonder; if he doesn't want anybody else to look at those photos, why has he mounted them in an album?

'Mo Job' is a good ep too, and includes one of my favorite sequences: Mojo and Princess at the peak and base of Volcano Mountain, shouting back and forth about their 'secret plan'.

Interesting item about the suspicious correlation between the Indianapolis Colts mascot and their theme song. Obviously they couldn't put anything like a turban on their monkey, or they'd be wide open to accusations of trademark infringement.

"Mo Job" was written with a much longer shouting session between Mojo and Princess - eleven minutes, if I remember right.

"Just Another Manic Mojo" is one of the best cartoons they've made. It's hard not to say "Cuuuuuuuuuuuuurses," after watching it.

Maybe they're mounted for his own sake, or to show to someone he'd actually *want* to show them to (which isn't the Girls, I'd imagine)?

I liked the "curses" lines as well (esp. when he said it after forgetting his wallet)...along with the absurdness of a supervillain waltzing down the street to buy eggs (and waiting for the light to change).... guess Mojo wasn't stealing those pop-tarts sprinkles for any nutritional value (MOJO: Those "sprinkles" are laden with artificial flavorings and colorings and unnatural ingredients.....I desired the sprinkles for my nefarious plans, not to feast upon for breakfast, as they lack nutritional value and taste, and thus are not very healthy or flavorful...)

>>'Mo Job' is a good ep too, and includes one of my favorite sequences: Mojo and Princess at the peak and base of Volcano Mountain, shouting back and forth about their 'secret plan'.
<<

I liked her yelling for "help" a la the opening lyrics of the Beatles' "Help" song.... (and I guess I forgot one superpower in my list above: telescopic/"magnifying" (and possibly microscopic, for all I know) vision...)

>>>Interesting item about the suspicious correlation between the Indianapolis Colts mascot and their theme song. Obviously they couldn't put anything like a turban on their monkey, or they'd be wide open to accusations of trademark infringement. <<<

Well, not sure that that was their intention, though it seemed rather odd that they'd use the phrase "mojo" to push sales of their monkey mascot (along with a smaller monkey they made up, "Extra Point Monkey")....picture of the monkey is here: http://detnews.com/2000/business/001...ess-156243.htm
I know, doesn't look much at all like Mr. Jojo, but I guess you could put a turban on the little blue monkey, along with a cape, and take him to a Colts' game (and utter various Mojo-phrases at the football players, like: "How could they have thought that was a first down?! It clearly was insufficient and inadequate yardage that the runner with the ball used to achieve and reach the required yardage for a first down that is necessary..." :-)

Heh heh- it looks like we've got more than one person on the Board who can write authentic Mojospeak.

Prehaps we should seriously consider doing that PPG/ P&tB crossover.

Maybe....

Re: the Colts: They fell apart in the second half of the game (after leading by a point at one point) and lost to the San Francisco 49ers....Mojo would not be pleased (MOJO [sitting in front of a TV set in his lair, with a Colts jersey on and holding a beverage can]: The Colts could not help it since several key and important players were sidelined with injuries. These injuries of course kept them from playing and bringing victory and wins for the Colts who play in the state of Indiana's state capital, which is Indianapolis....but *next* game, they *shall* be victorious! [Pause] But first, Peyton Manning must put in more hours of practice time...).

So it's your contention that Mojo Jojo is a Colts fan?

Maybe he's more involved than that. Prehaps he's used some of his ill-gotten gains to secretly purchase the team- that would certainly explain Touchdown Monkey.

If we want, we can make use of that theory in our prospective fanfic.

Sounds funny enough a notion to me... :-)

Heh....maybe so...

Once read the actual owner of the Colts has purchased recently the original Jack Kerouac manuscript for "On the Road" for a good sum of money....

>>If we want, we can make use of that theory in our prospective fanfic. <<

Hmm...

BUTTERCUP: You *own* and *like* the --- *Colts*?! (Snickers) As if they stood a chance in the playoffs...

BLOSSOM: Gee, guess that explains those little monkeys they keep showing at all their games....or having a monkey mascot for a team named after a *horse* to begin with....

MOJO: Pathetic little girls....the Colts may have their weaknesses, but they shall turn their weaknesses into strengths, and rise to defeat all that stand in their way thanks to those strengths---just as *I* shall do so over you!

BUTTERCUP: Uh-huh. If their track record's as good as *yours* is, no wonder they get slapped around on the gridiron so much....

MOJO: (Growls) Cease this criticism! Besides, I got a bad luck of the draw in the NFL draft last year...

Then, Spyro, you might want to have a look at the 'Cartoon Cartoons' Message Board here. Just click on the 'Toon Zone Forums' and scroll a little ways down the list to find it.

And if you enjoy reading or writing PPG fanfics, or WB cartoon fics, there's some good stuff at the Fanfic Board:

http://www.toonzone.net/wbc/fun/fanfics/

So far there's only two PPG stories there (both mine), but I'm sure they'd be happy to accept more.

I'm also certain there are tons more message boards on PPG sites which I'm sure there are lots of, I don't go on them but I see they have them on plently of websites.
Oh, and speaking of fanfics, coincedently I'm working on a fic on the Encyclopedia Histeria board involving the H! gang being targeted by a villain of the Powerpuff Girls, the devilish Him, the shows best villain when it comes to evil doing, though no one beats Mojo Jojo as a comical foe. Sure Mojo's pretty evil too but Him can outdo the chimp in that category in His sleep. However it involves writers from that Board most don't know and references several goings on there many people also don't know about. I don't know how many people go there, though a regular member here, Bourgeous Bufoon, was once a regular there{and is in my fic as well}so I probably won't bring it here since many of you won't get several of the jokes.

Oh, I forgot, another regular from here, Nifnat, is on the EH Board and is in my fic. Heh, well, you can now return to actually taking about the PPG after I got this thread completly off topic, but hey, there hasn't been anything I saw I could talk about here in a week or two, so there you go.

Speaking of good PPG websites, the best one I know for PPG fanfics is Pokey Oaks Fanfic Library:

http://pokeyoaksfanfic.com/APOFFL_archives.htm

What makes it better than average is they don't just post whatever they get- the writing has to meet minimum quality standards (and some of the stuff there exceeds those standards- check out any of Chris Cook's online comics!)
Yes, I've got a few things posted there myself; the two scripts mentioned above, and a couple other items which I can't really submit to the WB Fanfic site 'cause they're sequels to somebody else's story. But you may like 'em anyway.

Another of my most-enjoyed PPG sites is Daniv's Puff Page:

http://www.daniv.in2home.co.uk/Puff/Index.html

because it's Mojo Jojo-centered (he's my favorite PPG character), and because Mr. Daniv has a certain talent for comedy. But go check it out for yourself.
