All-Star Laff-O-Lympics
Does anyone remember this show? I'm curious to get the full rosters for the "Scooby Doobies" "Yogi Yahooies" and "The Really Rottens" but I cannot find a Hanna Barbera website (which I find strange) and they most likely wouldnt have it listed anyway.
I always rooted for the Rottens (naturally) to no avail...*sigh*! ![]() So far I have (from memory): Yogi's - Yogi Bear Cindy Bear Yackie Doodle (loved the yackster!) Those two mice (cannot remember names) Grape Ape (or was he on Scoobys?) Huckleberry Hound Augie Doggie Doggie Daddy Magilla Gorilla? I'm blank... Scooby's - Scooby Doo Scooby Dumb Shaggy Captain Caveman Teen Angels (Dee Dee? and ?) The Blue Falcon Grape Ape? Still blank...see what I mean? Rottens - Those cowboy brothers (one was fat two were midgets) Daisy Mayhem Daisy's Hog Muttley That guy who plotted with Muttley (was it Dastardly?) The Great Fondue The Great Fondue's rabbit The Creeplys (from the Flintstones not sure of names I think the mother was "Creepela") The Creeply's Octopus As you can see...the Rottens are difficult to remember as I think almost all of them were created for this show except: Muttley, The Creeplys and maybe one other. Anybody a fan out there? Cheers! |

Oh, have you ever come to the right place! I just happen to be one of the world's biggest Laff-a-Lympics fans. Whenever CN shows it I'm all over it, taping every ep I can get my hands on. Let's see now:
Yahooeys: Yogi Bear Boo-Boo Cindy Bear Huckleberry Hound Quick-Draw McGraw (but no Baba Looey --- yes, pc reared its ugly, er, aesthetically challenged head even then) Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy Wally Gator Pixie & Dixie & Mr. Jinks Yakkey Doodle Snooper & Blabber Grape Ape Hokey Wolf Scoobies: Scooby Doo Shaggy Scooby Dum Speed Buggy & Tinker Blue Falcon & Dyno-Mutt The Teen Angels --- Brenda, Dee Dee & Taffy Babu Captain Caveman Hong Kong Phooey (note: the Teen Angels had their own show, with either Babu or Captain Caveman, I'm not sure which. The Captain was so popular he landed a spot in the Flintstones Supershow with the Frankenstones, the Shmoo, etc.) Rottens: Mumbley (not Muttley; for some reason, they couldn't use Dick Dastardly & Muttley. Oddly enough, Mumbley turned up later on Tom & Jerry's show --- as a police lieutenant; well, the French Surete National was founded by an ex-con) Dread Baron (filling in for Dastardly) the Creeply family --- Creeply, Mrs. Creeply, & Jr. Creeply The Great Fondoo & Brak Rabbit The Daltons --- Dirty, Dastardly, & big brother Dinky Orful Octopus Daisy Mayhem & Sooie Pig Announcers Snagglepuss & Mildew Wolf, with Fred Flintstone & Jabberjaw popping in from time to time. And if there's anyone I've left out I'll let you know later today or tonight. |

It was with Captain Caveman. I saw a single ep of that show, which was enough. Ditto for my one 'Laff-O-Lympics' viewing. That's not to put down anybody with a different opinion of either of those efforts. But I have fond memories of the original versions of those old H-B characters, from way back when their target audience was older than six-to-eleven. So far as I'm concerned, no later resurrection has come close to doing them justice. |

I watched this show every week when I was a kid! Captain Caveman and that one character who always said, "Exit, stage left" were personal favorites...what was his name???? I am going nuts now.
Actually, the entire series was great. FUN, wonderful animation. Tis a shame such shows have to be remembered rather than being enjoyed today, isn't it. I read CN repeats it?? When? I would love to see this show again!

Babu was from Jeannie (the animated version of the 60's TV show). He appeared with her on Scooby Meets Jeannie.
The Dalton Bros had been on either Huckleberry Hound or Quick Draw. Laff-a-lympics was one of the best ideas ever. It was so interesting seeing almost the entire Hanna-Barbera universe together in competition. They should have had another team with Magilla, Secret Squirrel and some of the other mid-60's stars. Dastardly and Muttley (along with the other characters from the similar Wacky Races show) couldn't be used because they were owned by a company called Heatter-Quigley, so they substituted the identical "Mumbley", and the cheap Dastardly imitation Dread Baron. Later in the 80's, HB would buy out HQ, and then Dastardley and Muttley would regularly appear as the bad guys in the remaining Yogi & Friends series. |

Rapple dapple!
Babu was voiced by comedian Joe Besser, the heavyset wimpy funnyman who replaced Shemp in The Three Stooges after his sudden heart attack. Most Stoogeophiles are bitter Besser haters, from what I've seen at www.threestooges.net; anti-Joe sentiments are very acidic. I try to be more ambivalent and say that Besser had his own style which sadly just didn't mesh with Larry and Moe's (he disliked physical comedy and wouldn't let himself be slapped or eyepoked); also, the Stooges were getting on in years and the Columbia budgets were cut to the bone by 1957. Besser only appeared in 16 shorts in a few months before the shorts department went belly-up in 1959.
Snagglepuss said "exit...stage left!", as well as "Heavens to Mergatroid!" Dastardly and Muttley were cheaply imitated in Yogi's Space Race as well; I've thankfully forgotten the names of those fourth-rate baddies by now. The Daltons appeared in Huckleberry Hound Rides Again in the mid-sixties. Personally, I've always been a Hillbilly Bears fan. Unless I miss my guess, Pa Rugg was voiced by Alan Reed (who also did Fred Flinstone). Last edited by DR. BELCH; 06-04-2001 at 12:15 PM. |

responses
to Sharklady: Hey, that's alright. It's all good. We like what we want to like. Fwiw I never liked Scooby Doo. Not long ago the topic of favorite H-B shows came up on the ng. When I posted my favorites someone responded that if he tried he couldn't come up with a better list of the worst HB's. What can I say; I was born in the '70's & there's that nostalgia factor, altho Yogi's Gang no longer registers as fondly as it once did.
to Calhoun: I wish I knew. Anymore, CN's airings are to say the least sporadic. I think they intend to only pull it out of mothballs during actual Olympic competition. If I hear anything I'll let you know. to Eric B: Thanks for the info. I am curious tho. What was this Heatter-Quigley thingy? And if HB couldn't use Dick Dastardly & Muttley for Laff-a-Lympics why could they use them for their own show & Wacky Races? Or were those shows owned by HQ? They were HB shows I thot. Did HQ actually come up with DD&M? |

WOWIE!!
You guys are GOOD!! That's for sure! I just cannot believe that anyone really remembered it let alone knew all the characters!
![]() I agree with Nftnat in that we like what we like...period! I myself cannot stand any of the newer cartoons except for Dexter, Simpsons, Family Guy and Batman (naturally!). I mean Pokemon is just not appealing to me... What is appealing is that sense of nostaligia that Nftnat mentioned...the merging of several different characters into one big biforcated show was exciting to me! I suppose that is why I love Challenge of the Superfriends so much...bringing 11 heros and 13 villains together makes for interesting viewing IMO. Heck...I even enjoyed "Battle of the Network Stars" back then...just bringing in so many different characters makes it more interesting for me I guess! ![]() Heatter-Quigley is a big time (or was) producer of game shows. I am a game show fanatic (having been a big winner on one back in 93'). They produced lots of shows...most notably "High Rollers"...maybe they were in collaboration with HB and licensed their characters??? I'm interested to learn more. I wish I had CN!! I wish I had GSN!! I get nothing here in the sticks! ![]() Cheers btw...thanks so much for the backgrounds of some of the characters...I definately remember Babu...as I think they utilized him a lot...but had no idea about the Daltons!

Hey, Agatha, and other fans of this show!
Here are a couple new plush toys coming out! These look pretty good. They are due out in September.

Hey Agatha, I too rooted for the Rottens, but not to no avail. They auctually did win one episode. Whenever CN shows the cartoons (always during the Olympics) I watch with my kids and they love it when I defend the Rottens and get upset when they lose. Since I remembered vividly the episode in which the Rottens won, I was able to bet a week of extra chores with my kids and teach them a lesson about gambling.
GO ROTTENS !!!!! |

I happen to be opening up one of the oldest threads on the site. I went to end and found this. I always thought they should have had a fourth team made up of Jetsons and Flintstones characters as well as the gang from TopCat. Naturally, Fred would be the captain.

Yeah, this topic is terribly old. Instead of reviving dated threads (more than a few months old), feel free to start a new one.
