Popeye likes gambling, other men

Well, we were wondering what was delaying "I'm Popeye." Now we know.

You have to wonder what goes through some marketers' minds. Popeye is just not gay. He has unusual tastes in his women, but none for men. And slots? Slots are for grandmas, not sailors.

I've seen that commercial before! I think they had it on the Daily Show as part of the Ad Naseum spot.

Or the Levi's commercial where the kid says, "but dad I'm not gay...oops, I mean I don't smoke pot...oops." Two controversies in one commercial.

Yeah, the orange juice spot was on the Daily Show. Honestly, I thought the commercial was a little... weird. I mean, two enemies skipping around sipping orange juice and having a great time together? Hmmm, I just can't see to believe it. Something very unwholesome about it...

Well, back when I watched lots of Late Night B&W on CN... There was this Popeye short... no Olive in it... Bluto went missing and Popeye went looking for him, because they are friends deep down, I guess. The commercial's a twist, all right, but I wouldn't call it "unwholesome" really. You know, both of them could just have moved on to other women... Like that Mae West girl in this other short I saw- Popeye did seem to like her. And that particular short, in which Olive wound up eating spinach, wasn't as much a feminist statement as a reversal of a canon situation.

The commercial was a feature story by Steve Carroll about how gay people are taking over the world through media. They interviewed one man who said orange juice makes you gay (no lie!). The sgement was hilarious. I think it's gut busting how this guy through this comercial completely out of porportion.

Sorry, I meant unwholesome in a joking way. I guess I should have put that. Still think it's a very odd ad...

It's pretty amazing where they dig some of these people up for the Daily Show segments. And some of the views people have...I recall one with Joe Bob Briggs on his "Godstuff" segment where some lady Bible teacher was teaching on TV that kids playing with themselves lead to "acme." I still have that one on tape. I am sure I could think of more really odd ones given a good mind jogging.

I don't mean any disrespectful, either.

It's amazing the people they dig up. The old lady who saw her dog drive to a Taco Bell. The people who freeze dried their pets. A 96 year old presidential candidate. A minister who believes their should be a saint of handguns. The stuff they find just blows my mind.

Anyways...back to Popeye...

I saw that segment and it was stupid. I'm probably in the minority here, but Steve Carell is about as funny as a toothache.

I prefer Stephen to Steve, but I still find Steve funny.

I know this is veering even further off topic, but did anybody see Beth from the Daily Show on Boston Public Monday night? She did well in a dramatic role, but I do miss her on the Daily Show.

Personally I would have bagged Betty Boop. Anyone see the short in which she and Popeye appear together? She's tanned and topless, wearing only a lei over her...ahem...upper stories.
There was a second one in which Olive ate spinach--some amazon hilbilly woman had her heart set on Popeye, and once she ate some of the green stuff Skinny made short work of her. What is in that can, I wonder? Weed? Uppers? Spinach never did squat for my muscles...just tasted like soggy grass clippings....
Popeye and Bluto were buddy-buddy in a few shorts, though...like the one in which Olive is a cabaret singer/dancer and Popeye complains, "I don't do no sambo dancing."
