Bonus! We got Faye!

I must say that I like the sketch, especially the artistic license taken with Spike's suit. It give the whole thing a 40's/pulp feel and it WORKS! Very cool. Spike's hair is a little more messed up than usual, but it fits in with the rest of the sketch.

Great work John!

EDIT: And the first to grab an avatar from this fine sketch of the week goes to... ME! Thanks John.

Never heard of this show and I'm no fan of anime, but that's good work, kid. You'll go places. Thumbs up.

Howdy all,

Saddle up, Space Cowboy! Good to see Spike (and Faye) depicted by John Delaney. It always strikes me how he can manage to be faithful to the original material while planting his own distinct stamp on the characters.

Terminatah and Bird_Boy (and anybody else who doesn't know who Spike and Faye are) -- set your VCRs for Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim at 11:30 PM on Saturdays. It is to anime what Batman: The Animated Series was to superhero cartoons. 'Nuff said!

Thanks again, John!

Its good, but Spike never had any love Interest in Faye. It would have been better if Julia would have been with him insted.

Well, I don't know who either of them are, and I'm not a fan of anime either, but that's a great sketch, John. Can't wait to see your next one.

That's probably one of the best, condensed summaries of CB I've read in a long time. A great comparison.

True, but can't you forgive this one little thing due to artistic license, besides we don't know how much (if any) of Cowboy Bebop John has actually seen. And Faye's in the series a lot more than Julia so:

Not that I'm saying that Spike should have ended up with Faye or anything, just:

Cowboy is what they cal the bounty hunters, and the name of the ship they have is "The Bebop"

Hense - Cowboy Bebop.

It's really quite good, and I recomend it to everyone.

Cowboy = bounty hunter

Bebop = musical styling of the show (EDIT: or as naraht pointed out, the name of the ship)

I don't know, it works for me.

Personally I think that (anime fan or not) if you're a fan of animation you should do yourself a favor and check the series out. It's probably about as influenced by Western culture as you're going to get in something from Japan so anyone who's not a fan of anime is probably not going to feel lost when watching. Plus it's only been around for about 4 years now and has amassed such a large following for a reason.

I've meet people who didn't think CB live up to the hype, but I've never meet anyone who didn't like the series. It's got something for everyone: great animation, great characters, great stories. What's not to love?

That is an awesome drawing, and I am sorry so many people don't know about Cowboy Bebop!

The series isn't really stereotypical anime. I put it more on the level of the original Heavy Metal movie. It really stands head and shoulders over any other anime I have ever seen.

I have seen every episode shown on Cartoon Network, and I can say that the pic is faithful to what's on screen. Good job, John!

Besides the gallery on Toon Zone, or there any other websites that have John Delaney artwork?

Just a minor expansion on this point. "Bebop" as a jazz style was a response to what many musicians viewed as the rut that jazz had slipped in to, deliberately breaking down the structures that were accepted as "traditional" jazz. Bebop tended to be more free-form and experimental than traditional jazz, pushing the music away from "entertainment" and into "art." Stuff like extended solos and songs that lasted longer than a few minutes. I think the attitude is reflected in the characters themselves, and in the show itself.

One of the CB fan sites has the text that flashes on the screen in the intro credit sequence, which also talks about the relationship between bebop the music style and the code of the bounty hunters. www.jazzmess.com is probably a good place to start looking for that.

A musical historian can probably speak more to bebop as a musical style than I can. I was also initially turned off by the goofy name (despite my wife pushing me to give it a try), but watching the first episode on Adult Swim completely changed my mind about it.

Really, honest -- anybody here who thinks the sketch looks cool really owes it to him/herself to check out the show itself. There's a REASON why so many Adult Swimmers came to vote for Spike on this poll, yah?

Is there anyone else, like me, who's dying to color this pic? If so, let me know. There is a larger version available.
