I still have Windows XP. I've initially thought about upgrading to Vista, but I've heard "things" about it, so I never did.

I'm presently considering upgrading to Windows 7, but right now, I can't spare the extra cash to purchase it. However, I recently downloaded a Windows 7 Transformation Pack, so it will look like I have 7. This will give me some idea of what dealing with Windows 7 is like before I actually upgrade to it.

Just outta curiosity, what are all of you Vista haters doing that makes it crash all the time?

I think the only OS I've used that was that terrible was Windows 2000 Professional, and that was mostly due to my Dad having everything set up weird to run his various drafting programs (which the computer was actually underpowered for).

For what I've experienced, Vista seems to work almost flawlessly in computers that come with it, but when you install it on slightly older models it tends to slow down a lot. Apparently, there's quite an increase in size in the transition from XP to Vista.

Penny Arcade also did its own takes on the last two OS from Windows.

Do any of you know if 7 has gif support? XP's photo viewer had it, but vista doesn't...

Last time I remember when I was messing with my friend's beta version, the Photo Gallery program opens .gif files but the animation doesn't work. I've heard you have to use your browser to see the .gif file animated but never tried. I remember back in July, they gave this lame excuse that the reason for the limited (half-a**) support for this format is because .gif is not widely used for pictures.

My family has plenty of Operating Systems.
-Windows 95: Probably the first. Classic. A couple of desktop for it.
-Windows Me: Another classic. A couple desktop for it.
-Windows 98 Professional: Classic and was our main OS on the family desktop for years. A couple of desktops for it.
-Windows XP: The OS on my current laptop. Was also a main OS on the family desktop for period of time. A laptop and desktop for it. Classic.
-Windows Vista: The current main OS on the family desktop. Also the main OS for the laptops owned by siblings. Classic.

I want to get Kubuntu. Windows 7 shall be the next OS for the family desktop! Classic times, classic times...

I'd still be running Windows 2000 if there were driver support for newer hardware. It might have been a decade old, but I had no problems with it. I recently jumped to Windows 7, and it's a mixed bag. Some aspects are much better, but others are far worse.

I don't know why Win7 has to hog so much system resources. If this is an improvement over Vista, I'm glad I skipped. Search is easier to access, but the performance sucks. I don't want to have to index every drive to improve search either. The extent to which the OS likes to ravish hard drives is also annoying and somewhat worrisome. Explorer feels clumsier, despite new features. The prohibition on unsigned drivers in the 64-bit edition is a frequent pain; Microsoft couldn't find some other compromise? Many older applications now suffer from graphical issues.

I complain, but I don't have a choice. I need 64-bit Windows apps. If I had my way, I'd only be running Linux.

So first, you overused spocious, and now classic is your favourite word?

Must your posts only consist of one word repeated over and over again?

By the way, Windows ME is only "classic" for being the biggest piece of trash in technology history, and a rushed and transparent attempt at distracting people from Whistler's countless delays. There's a reason it had a shelf life of only a few months.

I'm currently on Ubuntu 9.04, I'll probably update to 9.10 one of these days... or I'll just wait for 10.04.

I thought it over and I'm going to keep this laptop on vista. I'm probably going to be getting a new desktop next year, and if so I'd like to have a system with each of the three recent windows releases. Besides, I'm being told that some of my programs won't work and that does not make me happy.

Given that in today's market a PC is only usable for about 4 years before becoming hopelessly obsolete, I tend not to upgrade existing hardware to new operating systems, as PCs usually tend to run best on whatever they came pre installed with.

That said...

my 2006 PC is running XP and is still my primary "hub" through which I route other connections and important things. I may replace this one within the next year.

my Note book also runs on XP

I have my mom running a Celeron on Vista through our HD tv via a HDMI connection.

If I do replace my primary, I'll get something pretty slick with windows 7

Still got XP.

My computer's almost 6 years old and shockingly it's held up pretty well. It runs pretty much all new programs, and while it's definitely not the fastest on the block it doesn't chug too bad. In some areas it craps out, but it's still very usable.

I did get it custom made though.

UPDATE: I uninstalled the Seven Transformation Pack (skin) yesterday because it was slowing down my PC. I'll just wait until we actually upgrade to Windows 7.

I never understood the point of those kinds of things. Why would you want to mimic all the cosmetic differences in a new OS-- you know, the things that make it a pain to get used to and hog more system resources-- when you can't have the under-the-hood improvements that (presumably) make upgrading worth it?

They're mainly a vanity/cheapskate thing: so people can look like they have the latest OS without having to pay for the real thing and so they can stick with the OS that they're familiar with.

But after recent experiences, I am starting to think that skins are more trouble than they're worth.

I have gotten rid of Vista and installed Windows 7 in its place.
7 originally wanted to upgrade Vista, but I didn't want any trace of Vista leftover so I reformatted and did a clean install of 7.

So far 7 has survived my stress test which always used to crash Vista, so points for that.

VirtualDub 64-bit doesn't work too well, so I went back to 32-bit.
The 32-bit is more than twice as fast as the 64-bit version. Someone needs to optimize the filters.
