I'm way behind on watching abridged stuff (I think my brain can still only take it in small doses ever since I had the bright idea to judge that contest), but I just caught Big O Abridged 5 today.

Holy crap. That was easily the best-written single episode of any abridged series that I've seen in a LONG time. Bravo.

Personally, I found the response video to the casting call to be entirely appropriate. It took him 4 MINUTES to announce the damn names and he both Rick Rolled and used Caramelldansen. I mean, Christ, really? That's like The Game, old meme is old. That, and I may never get tired of his Naruto as long as it's written well.

Also it was obvious it wasn't a huge deal in the first place, so don't make it sound like this was a failure on his part, even if you didn't find it that funny.

Well as far as lampooning the actual video goes, he did a fine job. I just... dunno... felt like there was no reason to lampoon it BUT since he lampooned the casting call I suppose he naturally had to lampoon the casting announcement.

I mean I enjoy some ribbing at Vegeta3986 as much as the next guy (perhaps more so) but I wasn't feel'n this one.

Can't wait for his Naruto Parody episode 3 though. It's easily one of my favorite parodies right now.

Now the actual cast announcement video was the true agony though I have seen worse video editing. It was a whole lot of round-about for very little entertainment value. But I suppose the point was to announce the winners but if that was an attempt to also entertain... it didn't work very well.

... no, really.
Now it'll be impossible for future episodes to live up to the standards of such high praise.
So why don't we talk about the negative stuff?

Did you not notice how the lip-flaps were off so many times?
Or that fact that an actor mispronounced one of her words?
And I certainly think the music placement could have been better at times.
It seems that anytime Sam doesn't know which BGM to use, he simply throws the Scryed soundtrack in there.


Though, in all seriousness, thank you for your compliment.
I was concerned about this episode. Mainly because I didn't think that other people would fully appreciate the Lieberman gag, but once Unwardil assured me that the ghost's droopy face does in fact kind of look like him, I knew I wasn't alone in my thoughts.

I'll just say what I said to Vegeta: it's about on a par with my editing at the time I made the first episode of Berserk Abridged, so if he sticks with it and edits videos on a regular basis for the next two and a half years, then just like me, he can be... still not as good as MasakoX. (-:

You too? I can't help but do so either, and yet I still find myself doing crappy flapping most of the time.

I need to learn most of the big guys' art of proper lip flapping. Then people will respect me, give me chocolate bars, and yell "Shalom!" at me out of respect and reverence towards the almighty Juu.

Well see, I find that if I'm dwelling heavilly on the visual presentation, good or bad, it's more a failing of another area that is lacking in the piece somewhere.

Put it another way, the number of jokes in an abridged series that hinge on flawless editing are minute when compared to those that hinge on a nice turn of phrase, comic timing or an already present and self evident visual gag and because it's comedy I'm after when I watch something with 'abridged' in the title, if you meet the first three components but mess up the presentation, you've still hit a 75% which by any reconing is an acceptable mark.

Consequently, I'll forgive bad editing with an excellent script but not the other way around.

I didn't say volume of writing, goodness of writing. But yes, when in doubt, just say lots of stuff very very fast and at the same time.

As someone who considers his own editing to be on the poor side, I agree with this statement completely. My ability to match flaps is horrendous, but I honestly think the jokes coming out of those mis-matched mouths are funny enough to make it passable.


Then again, I'm probably biased. Still stand by Unwardil's statement, though.

Well, slight disclaimer, not to sound like some kind of anti editing faciest, I don't simply ignore the lip flaps because over the... Oh god is it really YEARS of doing this now? I guess it is.... -ing hell... Anyway, over the years I've developed my own little tricks to synching the lips with about 85% accuracy and maybe about 25% more effort than simply looping the same piece of footage over and over again, and with a rate of return like that, I can hardly not do it, but I can still recall, especially when starting out how increadibly tedious it is when you don't have a trick you can rely on so I'm very forgiving in that regard.
