Today is officially the first day of winter! Although, I think it arrived earlier than that for most of us! I just wanted to wish anyone who celebrates the this day a very happy Solstice.

Wiccans celebrate today as Yule, and the link below is really good for learning about what the holiday means to them. It's a series of essays on what the holiday means to each person who contibuted:

This week in the NE will be a bit mild (near 50 on Tuesday!), and unfortunately, rainy on Christmas eve and day.

Actually, I wanted to do something along these lines yesterday...

Although it is a day late, Merry Yule to all the TZ'ers who are Wiccans. :)

:) But there's still hope for January!

Oh, and Merry Yule to all my Wiccan friends out there (they are almost endless in supply  ).

The winter solstice was at 2:04 A.M. ELT (eastern U.S. time). Therefore, only the pacific time zone and westward had it on the 21st this year. As of today, the earliest sunset (in the northern hemisphere) passed a few days ago, but more days will pass before the latest sunrise. However, this was the day that the sun rose the lowest in the sky.

and unfortunately, rainy on Christmas eve and day.

Unfortunately? Rain on Wednesday with with warm temperatures is fine with me! I dread snow before it arrives, like it when it is falling, and then hate it until it melts.

Wiccans have a few "holidays" that they celebrate, Wonderfly. :p

Wicca has eight major holidays, called the Sabbats. You can read about them here:

http://www.witchvox.com/xholidays.html

Celebrations of the full/new moon are also held, and these are called Esbats. Each individual or group decides which moon phase is appropriate for them to observe. There is no central figure (a "Pope") in Wicca. Other Neo-Pagan groups may or may not observe the Sabbats or Esbats.
