Earlier today, December 17, 2003, was the 100th anniversary of the first flight by humans, by Orville and Wilbur Wright. The following information is what I heard recently. An attempt by the United States shortly before then failed, as after lifting slightly from a ramp, the machine crashed into the Potomac River. The first "successful" flight was in a machine that was not quite long enough to be completely efficient, so it had to maintain a forward thrust at between 27mph and 32mph after taking off. For many years, some people, particularly Europeans, were under the impression that the first was in 1905 by someone from Brazil. The name "Kitty Hawk" was changed to "Kill Devil Hills." By the way, does anyone know how badly the proposed recreation failed this morning?

My history teacher told us about the 100th anniversary today, before we had a test.

Wow, who'd have ever thought that in 1903 we'd have 100 years of flight to look forward to and how much it would evolve, from Kitty Hawk, to WWI Bombers, to crossing the Atlantic, to commerical planes to space shuttles and satillites to today. It's just amazing thinking back on it.

+Correct Me If I'm Wrong, But I believe this to be a post of great importance, correct?+

"Oh yeah, great Normlacy. You now started her. It's Post 6000. Big Deal. So you have no life and share it with everyone. Who cares?"

Insanity, why can't you be more like Normalcy?

"Because I can't stand to lie through my teeth?"

+It is not lying Samanatha. I am just so happy for Diana. I'm sorry I was only here for a bit of the journey, but I am so glad for you. And thank you also other wonderful posters of Toonzone. You are just all so nice and caring. And despite our diffrences Samanatha, I hope we can also be friends+

"Yeah whatever. It's not like I have much choice cramped into this body of Diana's."

Glad to see that. And to me!!!

HAPPY 6000 POST!!!

Now everyone let's move on, after this important word from me.

I haven't heard much about the anniversary in the news. I guess because of Hussein.

Today is the day people should buy Microsoft Flight Simulator '04 if they wanted it. The game does commemorate the anniversary on the box...

There are two specials on Discovery Channel and History Channel about the Wright Brothers, for anyone interested.

Back in 1903 when the Wright brothers got their aircraft off the ground I don't think it was raining as hard as it was today and I believe there was a much stronger wind. I believe the Wright Flyer will get up off the ground eventually but as with all firsts and recreations there needs to be a bit of luck and the right circumstances.

As for the europeans claim that they were the first to accomplish this, it is open to interpretation but from my understanding, the Wright brothers were the first to accomplish repeatable controlled powered flight. Which I think means they got off the ground more than once with the same plane and were able to go in a desired direction. From what I understand a group of europeans also rebuilt one of their supposed first plane and flew it but cheated in that they used many modern parts and materials.

I think the biggest dissapointment I had today concerning the ceremony was that I was expecting the President to define his "back to the moon" policy that was mentioned a few weeks ago.
