Anybody read the new GI Joe comic? Any thoughts? I kinda liked it. The writer clearly loves the topic (anybody else get the Colton reference..?), but I wasn't so sure about the art -flashy, but some basic flaws in anatomy and facial construcion...

I prefer the 80s G.I. Joe comic art. This Image-inspired "jiggle and attitude" art style doesn't cut it.

There's no replacing the G.I. Joe of the 1980's. Although I never read the comic, I was a huge fan of the animated series and toys. That was a big deal when I was a kid. I remember I had all of the 3 3/4 inch figures, playset bases, vehicles. The cartoon was great!!! It had the best bad guys with Cobra Commander (Voiced by the late Chris Latta), Destro, Baroness (Destro's babe of a girlfriend), Dr. Mindbinder, Zartan and the Dreadnoxx gang. Cool stuff. The animated movie had an awesome opening scene with the Joes kicking Cobra's ass atop of the Statue of Liberty. My favorite Joe was a lesser known soldier called Dusty. See Dusty is my name and I thought it was cool to have the same name as a G.I. Joe. Ah the 80's! Yo Joe!

I wasn't a big fan of G.I. Joe. In fact, I'm still not. I had a G.I. Joe video, probably bought by a relative, and a G.I. Joe bedtent, not sure why I had a G.I. Joe one.
Anyhow, back on the subject, my roommate was a fan. Big one. So he got the book. I read it, and found it enjoyable. I might pick up the trade when it comes out.
The art didn't bug me. I've just gotten used to the manga-esque Image style (it's been showing up in my Superman books alot, among other places).
So, basically, it was decent.

I picked it up and enjoyed it very much - I think the writer definitely has the feel for the characters, and I'm looking forward to reading more. But, I gotta agree with Frozen, the art is definitely off.

I finally got through my stack of comics that I haven't had time to read. I thought it was great and can't wait for issue 2. I have to agree, I'm not that big of a fan of the art, and the BI-MONTHLY shipping schedule REALLY sucks a big one. Issue 2 in November and issue three in January? Come on!

Posted my message before I got done. Not very many comics ship bi-monthly. And one of the few that does would be GI Joe. Anybody know why Image is doing this? There was brief story at the comics contiuum that Image was thinking of shipping issue 2 early cause number 1 was selling so well, so well in fact that they went back to the printing presses. I hope they release it early and change this bi-monthly thing.

Thought I'd mention this:
Marvel is releasing their old G.I. Joe and Transformers comic series in trade paperback form starting in April. The plan is to release all the Joe stuff, maybe even in bimonthly trades, and then do some selected TF arcs, and see where it goes from there. Also, Dark Horse is gonna release Marvel's Star Wars series in trade form as well.
Now, I mentioned earlier in this thread that I'm not much of a Joe fan, but I'm definately picking up the TF trades, and quite possibly the Joe trades. I've just heard too many good things.
It's a great time to be a child of the 80s!

the Marvel GI Joe comics are, initially, very very good. Larry Hama does a fantastic job, despite some of the really ludicrous concepts he has to try and make credible (Battleforce 2000, anybody?). Things go a bit downhill when we get toward the horrendous "Star Brigade" toys, but, on the whole, great stories with great characters...
And am I glad to hear that the GI Joe trade paperbacks are coming out. Hell no. Why? 'Cos I've just spent the last two months chasing round trying to get all the back issues (only 25 to go)!!! :o

Any thoughts on GI Joe issue #2? I thought it was just as good as the first, but the art has not improved. Some nice touches on the writing, though...
