It's a good thing Gilmore Girls is a repeat, because tonight (Tuesday night, not Monday night...technically I can say that) is the annual airing of Charlie Brown Christmas. Last year, they did something interesting and added an additional half-hour of new material, unrelated to the original special.

It was based on the strips, like all these are(even the original had several gags stolen from strips). One thing that bothers me about these new ones, though, is the fact that the timing of the original strips is something else from what is shown onscreen. They just have kids read the dialogue lines one after another flatly, and it ruins some gags. I remember seeing one scene last year where Lucy suspected Linus of something, and he said he hadn't done it, so Lucy stormed off. Then Linus said, "Off the old hookeroo!"
But THIS Linus said it this way: "Off the old HOOKeroo?" The kid reading the line messed up. There's no way anyone would get "Hookeroo" if the sentence wasn't inflected in the right area, and it really wasn't. Four or five million viewers said, "Huh?"
This year we should be seeing these "new" moments again, as well as a third Peanuts christmas special. Yes, I said third...don't forget 1992's "It's Christmastime again, Charlie Brown." Some things were also done wrong in that one too...many strips were linked together and none of the dialogue was taken out, so some characters repeated the same things two or three times. Producer Melendez, who's always done the specials, shouldn't be so careless...it just ends up looking bad.

Although I highly doubt it would happen, it would be a good idea to air this special commercial-free. They show it every year in December, and instead of cutting out certain scenes just for ad money, they could show a 90-second ad from some company who presents this show at the beginning and another one at the end. They did that for 24 earlier this year, so why can't ABC consider doing that? I just feel that it would be a great idea for people who don't have this show on tape/disc to watch it with their families without interruptions.

Heh, I can just see it:
*dramatic music*
"It's Charlie Brown! Tie him up, hold a gun to his head and make him deliver our package!!"
*CB leaves with package*
"Hey, wait! That's Charlie Brown on the TV! We jumped Charzlienar Brown by mistake! Dang...."

Charlie Brown's Christmas Tales

Yeah, it was a great, funny special. At least this recent special, which is essentially comic strip material animated and shown in no particular order, was presented in "sketch" form, ala A Charlie Brown Celebration, It's An Adventure, Charlie Brown (a personal favorite special) and The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show saturday morning TV series, so it really isn't messy or confusing to watch.

There were many funny elements. I really loved Sally hanging her socks on the chimney, Linus' tangle with the girl at school (BTW, the envelope reads "Sparkyville, USA"), Snoopy playing "Christmastime is Here" on the accordian and many others in the show. Excellent program.

I'd guess that's a reference to Charles Schultz's nickname, Sparky.

Apparently when he was a kid, one of his uncles called him that in reference to 'Sparkplug', a horse in the old Barney Google* comic strip.

Linus' tangle with the girl at school

I still have a book with more of the Lydia strips in them and there was more that happened than that. Those were great; she drove him even more nuts than Lucy. We missed this part:

Linus: "Do you remember when you used to say to me, "Aren't you kind of old for me"? It's the kind of thing we look back on and laugh at, isn't it?"
Lydia: "Who are you?"

Heh, I've actually been there now.

And we missed his "revenge":

Lydia: "I need to borrow a pencil, can I borrow a pencil from you?"
Linus: "Oh yeah? Well...AREN'T YOU KIND OF YOUNG FOR ME?? HA HA HA! REVENGE!! YA HA HA! REVENGE!! HA HA HA---"
The next scene is Linus sitting by the principal's office door.
