View Full Version : Dragonball Week 13+ - Talkback (Spoilers)

PaQ
11-24-2003, 03:10 PM
This is the official talkback thread for Dragonball episodes premiering on Toonami this Thanksgiving week and the next, Nov 24th to Dec 1st at 6:30ET, as Dragonball nears its conclusion. As usual talk about the episodes as they air, if the episode hasn't aired yet use those beautiful spoiler boxes.

Last Week:
Goku defeated Piccolo and was declared the Martial Arts Champion. Kami attempted to give Goku his job but Goku would have none of that and flew the scene with Chi Chi. Goku and Chi Chi make preperations for their wedding with the Ox King, so all's well right? Not when Ox King's castle catches on fire. Only the Bansho Fan can stop the fire and Goku's looking for it. Will he find it? Will the Ox King and Chi Chi's wedding dress survive? Find out, only on Toonami.

This week's titles:
Monday - "The Fire Eater" - Goku and Chi Chi's search for the Bansho Fan leads them into the heart of a fiery volcano. Once inside, they must face a mighty creature that consumes flames: the Fire-Eater!
Tuesday - "Outrageous Octagon" - Goku's search for the Bansho fan leads him to a treacherous mountain that has a strange curse. Chi Chi is faced with the biggest mess of her life when she meets a mysterious old woman, while the Ox King tries to flee the raging fires that threaten to destroy his castle!
Wednesday - "Mystery of the Dark World" - After the Bansho fan fails to put out the fire threatening the Ox King, Goku and Chi Chi set out to find the Magical Furnace, believed to be the last hope for extinguishing the deadly blaze. But before they can complete their quest, Goku must solve the mystery of the Dark World.

BTW: I didn't see one up and it's only a few hours away so I hope Knux and Will don't mind that I did it.

12/1/03 Edit from William C. Maume:

Monday December 1st - 'The End, The Beginning'

Episode Description: "Goku and Chi Chi must travel to Mt. Five Elements in a last ditch effort to save her father, the Ox King, from the deadly magical flames, which threaten to consume his kingdom. Before Goku can complete his quest, he must fan the flames of Fate and hope he doesn't get burned!"

- Thanks to Dragonball.com for the episode description!

Since the final week is only 1 episode, we'll keep using this Talkback thread. The earlier parts of this post were edited as necessary to reflect this.

A Note About Talkbacks

4) Talkback Threads

4.1 - Most commonly a talkback is a thread dedicated towards the discussion of a single episode or multiple episodes of a Toonami show. In some cases they are also used for Toonami events, openings, promos, etc. The Talkback threads on the Toonami board were inspired by those used on the World’s Finest message boards.

4.2 - Generally the moderators make Talkback threads, especially those for specific shows. Since we have not as of yet restricted this to moderators any board member can make a Talkback thread as long as they follow a few simple rules.

4.2.A - Don’t post a Talkback thread before the day the episode the talkback thread concerns is supposed to air. Basically, Talkback threads do not do the board much good before the episode is going to air. Instead they just take up space.

4.2.B- Be original and informative. A one line talkback thread is not going to cut it. If you are going to take it upon yourself to make a talkback thread we want to see you put some work into it. Generally the other board members don’t like seeing the moderator’s format copied either. Improve on what we do, add your ideas and give the reader some information. There is a good chance the thread will be stickied, make it look good.

4.2.C- Include a poll. If you forget, there are ways the moderators can add a poll afterwards, but it is a real pain to do. Thus, we ask that you please include a poll in the first place.

So yeah, it's no prob. I was sorta wondering if anybody would put them up today, or if y'all relying on us. You guys are on your own Friday.

Yay! Pilaf gets one last gasp before the end of DB!

That fireman looks like Yamcha.

It's been a while since we've seen Turtle, hasn't it?

Turtle's first big role since early DB.

Hehe, ChiChi doesn't wanna look at Roshi's porn pile, huh?

Turtle wearing glasses. Heh, that's funny.

Aww, aren't they a sweet couple?

That's a pretty cool way to defeat a monster.

Damn, it looks like it's just Shu and Mai, no Pilaf today.

Haven't I seen that old guy before?

A sad, but ultimately corny, backstory.

PILAF! HE DOES APPEAR! YAY!

God, that was some bad dubbing there when ChiChi was grabbed.

Hehe, love Mai's & Shu's reactions to Goku's name.

Yay! ChiChi beat them up instead of Goku!

The Fire-Eater looks like a gigantic chicken...

How cliché.

LOL! Wasn't expecting that. Just like Roshi to make it to impress girls.

If You Can't Eat The Heat, Then Don't Come On Down To The Dragonball Episode Review of "The Fire Eater".

Hmmmmm, even with what I knew about this saga, Pilaf's return surprised me. Who was kind of hoping that Goku would finish him off here just so we wouldn't have DBGT in the future (then again, I'm sure the creators would just find some other villian to collect the black star dragonballs, but you know what I mean). Anyway, despite first thoughts, an intresting episode. Did you notice that this quest is kind of making Goku and Chi-Chi closer together in a sense? So at least it's some development in the anime filler. Too bad this episode was almost a waste, but at least they find someone who knows where the real fans is. Highlights would be Goku petting the creature and calming it down (and Shao trying a similar technique but being to short to reach the dragon), Goku's reaction to seeing Emperor Pilaf ("Oh no, not again"), Chi Chi knocking out Mai and Shao easily enough (and you thought she got caught so easily on purpose. Nah it was just to get the drop on those suckers), the cutaway to Master Roshi yelling at The Turtle for telling them about the story of the Fire Eater's wings making the Bansho fan ("You idiot! I never really knew the secrets in those books, I just transcribed them to try and attract girls"). Looks like Pilaf is still on Goku's trail for some reason. Wonder what he's up to now. Good episode. A-

Pilaf returns..
It was really nice to see the return of Pilaf & Co. as the end of DB nears especially since they've been there since the begining.
I think that was cut a bit when the turtle was looking through Roshi's closet. However it was apparent anyway that Chi Chi wasn't a big fan of what was in there. :D
What's up with Goku? Just ordering "Where's Roshi?" , c'mon what happened to the master part? I think someone's getting an ego..
I loved the moment when Pilaf & co. recognized Goku, I was just anticipating it and it was great.. :anime:
That fire eater looks like a purple cousin of Big Bird..
I like how they shot back to Roshi's Island at the end yelling at the turtle that he only made the book to impress a girl, it was funny.
Overall an A. I liked the episode, not much fighting, but I thought it was a decent story, some great lines, some great scenes and the return of some memorable DB characters. Things are starting to come full circle.

Heh, Pilaf returns again. I liked Goku's "Oh no, not them again." And then they all in turn recognize Goku:D And Chi Chi got in a few good moves. And the return of Turtle, yay! I liked his glasses:p And it figures that Roshi would make up something like that to get girls. So now Goku and Chi Chi are headed toward an iceberg in the north to get the Bansho fan, and Pilaf looks like he's gonna tail them. What is blue-boy up to now? Overall, not bad, though it seemed to stretch a bit thin at parts. A-.

It's nice to see Goku-Chichi scenes that don't consist of shrewery and abandonment. Love the scenes where Chichi lies against Goku and the couple celebrating their discovery of the Fire-Eater.

Unique to see Chichi without the backbone she would possess later on (the woman who faced off Buu is scared of a giant lizard).

Several scenes of foreshadowing:
- Chichi likening Pilaf's cap to a baby's. Her infant son wore such a cap.
- Goku and Chichi witnessing the miracle of birth. Gives one a good idea on how they reacted to the coming of their own child.

This marks the last time Launch appears with the group.

Roshi's original reason for writing the book was being drunk.

The way they quickly cut to Roshi yelling at turtle then quickly cut back to the main story reminded me of Family guy.Of course, this came first, but it was still funny.

Heelllo there, Turtle here. Sampo had a rough day sooo he asked me to read what he wrote in this book here. Lets see...

*uses a flipper to straighten his glasses*

I thought this episode was fun, even though it was just filler! We got to see Chichi and Goku together, which is nice, and some other characters made a reappearance on the screen. Got to love that Turtle... Awww, that's nice for him to say that... Also we get to see Pilaf and his two lackys.

One of my, well Sampo's, favorite scenes was when Goku and Chichi were flying on the Nimbus over the ocean... Aww, I wish I could see that. Oh wait, what are these pictures here? That's CUTE! Chichi resting against Goku's back (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/sigh.jpg). Also water spraying against Chichi's cute face (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/cute.jpg).... Hey, I think I recoginze those dolphins. (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/dolphins.jpg) One of them use to star on a show. Hmm, can't remember the name...

Uhhh...Hey he also included this picture... Ehh, looks like it was glued together... Its the Dragon Ball gang on that plane ride (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/panplane.jpg).... *sniff* I wanted to watch the tournament too :( But I got stuck here cleaning up after Master Roshi. And when he got back he was none to pleased when I told him about his book. (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/yell.jpg)

Back to what Sampo wrote here... Hmm, Hey more pictures...Let's see, ummm... Sampo writes, seeing Pilaf and his gang again was nice. (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/vill.jpg) Also their reactions when they realized (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/vill2.jpg) the young man that stood before him was that little brat who always foiled their plans made me, well Sampo, grin... THAT lady Mai tried to pull a gun on Goku's girlfriend! (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/gun.jpg) Oh wait, here she is again with Shu after Chichi knocked them out. (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/chichi.jpg)

I found a shot of that fire eatter (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/bird.jpg)... Odd, it looks nothing what Master Roshi drew in his book (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/book.jpg).... Oh I forgot, he was drun... Errr, wanted to impress a girl, uh that's it.

Now here he wants me to talk to a guy called "Duke".

Turtle wearing glasses. Heh, that's funny.

HEY!!! TAKE THAT BACK!

That fireman looks like Yamcha.

Now, Who is the one who needs glasses? (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/fire.jpg)

That's a pretty cool way to defeat a monster.

*rummages through a pile of photos*

That is one scary monster... Too bad that dog person didn't do so well. (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/aww.jpg)

Haven't I seen that old guy before?

Sampo writes, he looks like Dr.... Wily? (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/willy.jpg) Whoever that is

Oh well... I better shuffle off... Take care everyone!

Leftover Screen cap:

Goku and Chichi celebrating. (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/yeah.jpg) :)

*Sampo pops in*

Also I would like to point out... Hmm how do I say this without causing future harm to this episode but hinting something... Well I haven't seen the unedited version, but I got an idea how "dirty" those Roshi mags were.

Random thought: Are Turtle's glasses tortiseshell?

::rimshot::

Sorry, couldn't resist. ^_^; That popped into my head when I saw Turtle's glasses yesterday.

Otherwise, this "filler" arc has been pretty enjoyable so far. I like seeing young ChiChi - I don't hate her DBZ self, but I like seeing her before her personality changed.

What happened to ChiCh?. She kicked a lot of ass in this show. I guess motherhood mellowed her out.

DianaGohan

She wasn't "mellowed" out enough to go smack Buu in the Buu saga. Oh, and the turtle with glasses reminded me of that lollypop commerical.

"Hey Mr Turtle, how many licks are they're to the center of a dragonball?"

"I don't know, but stop when you get to GT. Trust me."

Emperor Pilaf rocks. Heh heh... aw, poor Mai.

Yes, this was a pretty good episode. You see how Chi-Chi was scared out of her mind by one single bee? Yeah, that would be me too.

I found it weird that Chi Chi was scared and running away from a bee when moments ago she was shooing away another bee that was flying around her.

More weirder than Chichi having no training on how to cook and clean!?

Anyway, I loved the scenes of Goku and Chichi: falling in the blizzard, shivering together before Octopus or warming themselves. Too bad Toei wouldn't let them warm each other by sharing some 'body heat' under a fur blanket...

I haven't laughed so hard in awhile at DB.
The antics of Pilaf & Co. was once again hilarious. There continued attempts at attacking Goku failed due to the storm, yet that didn't stop them. Pilaf knocking Mai off of the hill was great, as was Shu blowing Pilaf & Mai away with the Bansho fan. :D
So we see a reason that may have caused DBZ Chi Chi. That old woman really took it to her, having her clean the whole house, and all those dishes and wanted her to sweep the whole forest. Chi Chi seems OK at the end, but could she just be hiding it? COULD SHE??
That was funny seeing the snow melt as Goku flew. It surprised me as the reason that the snow didn't work, silly me forgot that ice would melt..
OX King has to get a freaking medal or something for the length of time he's survived in that flaming castle and that he's kept the wedding dress intact.
Overall an A. I've been BLOWN away by this saga, it has had me cracking up the whole time and I am looking forward to the rest. It's definitely gonna be a filling end to Dragon Ball.

Thanks To Eddy (Because Of Not Wanting To Do Two Posts In A Row) I Can Finally Do The Dragonball "Outrageous Octagon".

This was a good episode, with some points I want to make.

1. You know, with today and yesterday's episode, Pilaf and Co. are really starting to remind me a bit of Team Rocket (even though they came first), or at least more on how they should be done. Not appearing in every episode but rather in like every saga and having some good plan each time. This will probably be though the last time we see Pilaf though.... uh, unless you count DBGT... and you count DBGT?

2. As I've said before, the story of Dragonball has a lot of roots in the ancient story of the Monkey King, and the Bansho fan is the most direct refrence to it. Of course in the original story, the Bansho fan was actually used to cool the fires down, but not in Dragonball. Here is some history of said story from Monkey King (Scroll down some if you don't want to read it).

Monkey King got that way because as an ordinary monkey he
perpetrated a lot of mischief including stealing and eating the
Peaches of Heaven and drinking the Elixer of Lao-Tsu. He was thus
rendered indestructible and immortal. To make up for his
transgressions, he was sent by the goddess Kwan-Yin to accompany
the Buddhist monk Hsuan-Tsang on the latter's pilgrimage to India
so he could bring Buddhist scriptures back to China. The two are
accompanied by a human with a pig's head and a demon, but you don't
have to worry too much about them. They arrive in a land where the
temperature is unbearably hot, and are told by an old man that
Flaming Mountain blocks their path to the West. The only way the
climate is ever moderated is by paying tribute to an Immortal named
Iron Fan, whose magic palm leaf fan can put out the fire and bring
on rain. Iron Fan lives in Palm Leaf Cave, part of Mount Emerald
Cloud. (This story contains some of the most heavy-handed use of
proper names this side of Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," but
anyway...). Upon arriving at the cave, Monkey learns that Iron Fan
is really Princess Iron Fan, wife of the Bull Demon King. A first
attempt to steal the fan ends in failure because Princess Iron Fan
gives Monkey the wrong one. He learns that the Bull Demon King is
off at Cloud-Touching Cave in the Mountain of Gathering Thunder.
This is the home of his mistress, Princess Jade Countenance. No,
there's not going to be any of THAT in the story. Frank Strom may
draw inspiration from these myths but he's not stupid! Monkey
tries intimidating Princess Jade Countenance who summons the Bull
Demon King: "The last I heard," he says to Monkey, "you were chased
out of Heaven and pinned beneath the Mountain of the Five Phases by
the Buddha." So they start to fight. What starts out as a best-
three-out-of-five match drags out to a best-sixty-out-of-one-
hundred match with no clear winner, until the Bull Demon King stops
fighting in order to be on time for a dinner party. He tells
Monkey to cool his jets, changes into a green dinner jacket and
rides his "water-cleaving steed" into a lagoon. Monkey figures
that the dinner host is a dragon so he changes himself into a
thirty-six pound crab. He tries to crash the party but thinks
better of it; instead, he steals the Bull Demon King's horse and,
assuming the shape of the Bull Demon King, goes back to Princess
Jade Countenance, gets her drunk and steals the real fan. When the
Bull Demon King realizes someone's stolen his ride, he rides a
cloud back to his concubine's cave where he discovers that the fan
has been stolen. Promising to "gouge out his heart and his liver
and serve them...on a platter" (Yum, yum!), he goes after Monkey.
Assuming the shape of the pig-headed human, he tricks Monkey into
handing over the fan and they start fighting each other in the old
Sonic-Knuckles tradition. The battle is joined by the monk and
Monkey's traveling companions, as well as a supporting cast of
deities with names like "Diamond Guardian Diffusion of the
Mysterious Demon Cave on Mount Wu-t'ai." Try fitting THAT on a
driver's license. Monkey and his friends and the deities gang up
on the Bull Demon King and after a battle of transformations (like
the duel between Madam Mim and Merlin in Disney's "Sword In The
Stone") Monkey finally gets the fan so he can put out the fire and
he and his companions can resume their pilgrimage, and all the bad
characters convert to Buddhism.

Long, wasn't it? Sound Familar dosen't it? I'll move on

3. I had read somewhere that Chi Chi had gotten some training on how to be a good wife, but I hadn't expected this. She has a lot of good endurance though. Notice how at the end the Old lady said to her "Never stop being sweet" or something like that. I guess she must have "lost" it for the most part in DBZ.

4. Don't you think by now the flames would have killed Ox King and burned down the entire castle? Unless of course the flames are more then just flames, which is what I'm thinking.

Anyway, good episode. A-

you all may like it but I've found this saga pretty lame and boring. the fight vs picollo wasn't very good either.

pilaf saved todays episodes but all the others before it stank. the fire STILL isn't out? why? just go get the fire eating birds to eat it up! I haven't wanted a DB saga to just end ever before but please..end it! http://members.aol.com/kimminakochan/chicken.gif

It's too bad that JL and TFA are showing New to Toonami episodes(I think) or else I would've suggested that they have made wednesday a full hour of Dragon Ball so that it would finish all together in one nice flow instead of now having to wait a holiday weekend to see the end.

EDIT: Actually only TFA are showing Toonami premieres.. so I wonder if they considered what I alluded to..

Chichi cleaning?!!!

*minior rant*
Hmm, dunno. I didn't like the tone of this episode. I didn't find this episode funny as we have a mountain that dislikes women. So instead of going with Goku, Chichi is stuck with that old lady doing mundane things such as cleaning... :( Sounds lame to me. If it was a role reversal, Goku had to stay back and clean while Chichi had to brave the mountain with Pilaf and his goons, that might have made it more enjoyable for me.
*end minor rant*

Oh well, favorite scenes for me were when Goku had some fun with the evil trio (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Dragon Ball/youdroppedthis.jpg):

Goku "Hey you dropped this!"
Pilaf and crew "ARRRGGGRGGG!!!!!"
Goku "Juuussttt Kidding!" :D

Another one was when Mai rejoined Pilaf and Shu:

Pilaf "Mai, its good to have you back! It's time for plan R!"
"Comrades on my mark.... RUUUNNNN!!!!"
Pilaf and co scream, running for their lives. :D

I agree that Pilaf, Mai, and Shu resemble Team Rocket. They have all these wacky inventions but they have a hard time succeeding with their plans. Although I love Pilaf and crew, as for Team Rocket...

Enter The Magical Furnance And The Final Adventure of Dragonball In It's Episode Review of "Enter The Dark World".

Dragonball's starting to close down shop. Even the announcer's admitting the final episode's tommorow, so we'll finally see how that series ends before it headed to Z. This episode was fairly good though. The Dark World idea was intresting (zombies and giant dragons being part of your imagination and Goku and Chi Chi managing to pass through to it) and the Bansho fan proves to be a useful weapon (Would of come in REALLY handy at the end of Deadzone if Goku could of wiped it hard enough) and hey, even a special surprise return appearence by Grandpa Gohan (Notice how Gohan says he knew her because her father showed her to him when she was a baby. It would have been intresting if they had introduced Goku and Chi Chi to each other when they were babies, but oh well) and the keeper of the Magical Furnace Anien (Correct Spelling... probably not). Anyway, Goku's faced with a pretty intense dilemina: Try and turn off the Furance and have the world face chaos, or keep it on and see Chi Chi's dress burn in the flames (oh, and Ox-King to). Wonder how he solves this. Decent enough episode, but I have a feeling that like DBZ, Dragonball will end on a whimper and not a bang. B

I've toyed with that idea for a fanfic.

Other comments:
Dang, I wished they did more episodes devoted to just Goku and Chichi. Today's highlights included the couple standing side-by-side on Nimbus, and the scene where the frightened Chichi's love for her man convinces her to stand by Goku against that dragon.

BTW: I think Gohan's here for the animators to suggest why Goku and Chichi named their child after him (this was later retconned).

Decent enough episode, but I have a feeling that like DBZ, Dragonball will end on a whimper and not a bang. B

Well, speaking as a person who hated the endings of Z and GT, I liked DB's conclusion.

Another return... Grandpa Gohan!
It was nice to see Grandpa Gohan again, it had been awhile since they last showed him, since I believe if I'm not mistaken right before introducing Tien and Chiatzou. It was funny that Gohan also didn't believe at first that it was Goku, as all the other returning characters have acted when they first meet Goku.
Not much of a story besides that fight against the "fake" enemies, and finding the furnace.
The whole fight scene sort of shows that Goku has indeed not learned to Fly yet, as he had to jump two gaps, he was hanging on to the edge of the cliff to save Chi Chi, and he used the Kamehameha to go through the imaginary dragon.
Nice to see that Baba has practically been in all the episodes in this mini saga, her most screen time since her introduction and this will be the first group of episodes that she has more screen time than her brother Master Roshi in DB.
Overall a C+. It was an OK episode, not on par with the other episodes this week. Not as much humor, it had a little more action but what kept this a good episode for me was seeing Grandpa Gohan. It's too bad that due to CN's schedule that the finale will be on Monday.. :( Oh well, I'm sure the finale will do DB justice.

For those wondering about the ending... Goku does stop the flames from reaching Ox-King's castle anymore. Then you see Goku and Chi-Chi get married. Although that scene was short, they didn't show them actually be married by a priest, or kiss. Then the announcer asks "What lies ahead for the Newlyweds?" then Baba says "The future, it couldn't hurt to take a peak.". And then starts moving her hands around her crystal ball, chanting. And right as it's about to show you something she stands in front of it to prevent you from seeing. Then the narrator says "For the further adventures of Goku and friends, be sure to watch Dragon Ball Z!".

He was the last of Baba's fighters in her little mini saga, which came right after the Red Ribbon army saga and right before Goku trained for the 22nd Martial Arts Tournament.

The whole fight scene sort of shows that Goku has indeed not learned to Fly yet, as he had to jump two gaps, he was hanging on to the edge of the cliff to save Chi Chi, and he used the Kamehameha to go through the imaginary dragon.

I wouldn't say that he dosen't "not learned" flight, just that he hasn't mastered it enough to use it most situations (heck, he still prefers to use the Nimbus cloud in teh beginning of DBZ).

I think Toei just didn't realize how big a part of DBZ flying would become in later episodes.I mean after the battle with Vegeta, they fly constantly.

That's true, that's probably a reason why this series should've aired before DBZ, but then again would it have had as big an audience as it has if this(DB) had aired first?

So, does Ox King still have his kingdom in DBZ, or what?

That's Goku, never showing proper respect to high-ranking people.

So...I take it the Dragonballs screwed up this special ritual...

I wonder if the Dragonballs could fix this problem.

Goku, never tell a woman she's old.

Wow. The Bansho fan actually plays a role. Who knew?

Geez, what's with the octagons?

This reminds me of an RPG...

Hmm, so Goku has about 30 seconds or so to do this? And he has only .000000001% of succeeding? (Around here, we call it the 0-9 Factor. [Free Nintendo 64 game to the one who gets this reference.])

I wish Toei made the Garlic Jr. Saga this cool.

So, that teeny tiny hole is what caused the fire at Frypan Mountain?

See? Goku's flying!

I dunno why, but I like the profile view of Goku flying up through the fire. It looks cool.

And the Power Pole isn't burned at all.

Ox King's laugh is annoying.

The only time during the series where Goku wears a tuxedo.

Yay! They kept the DBZ part!

It's "The End" Of Dragonball, But "The Beginning" Of Z In The Dragonball Episode Reivew of "The End, And The Beginning."

Okay, let's go down the checklist

Finished Dragonball (check)

Finished Dragonball Z (check)

Finished Dragonball GT (still need to work on that)

Finished Watching the Movies and Specials of DB, DBZ and DBGT (I need to work on that as well).

Okay, so Dragonball is over. So how was it's ending? Better then Z's, but that's really it. Nice to know the little sidequests had a purpose and there being a pretty good reason for the furance creating that fire, but it seemed to be to "fillery" even for filler. I would have liked to see the end expanded more (Goku and Chi Chi at the wedding, maybe a little sneak peak at the beginning of Z (Hey, it was available in manga form at that time right?) and perhaps seeing what the others were doing) but it was a good ender. Not great but good. B+

6 years of DBZ/DB, and it's over without any warning?

man, Now all I have to do is find a COMPLETE dub of DBGT... (Is there such a thing as a DUB that doesn't cut the first 20 episodes to shreds?)

Well doesn't the British dub do the whole series?

Anyway, while today's episode was a bit weird (even with Gohan's cute "girlfriend"), it does sort of finally bring closure to this section of the DB universe. While the next episode enters the more viceral world of DBZ, it is still great to see the more innocent and wonderous world of the original series.

Thanks for everything Mr. Toriyama. (since DBGT is, but isn't, his work, this could be the end of another era.....)

Oh DB, how I'll miss you so.
Goku was real rude.., simple minded, wasn't listening and he knocked down his grandfather.
Anine(sp?) with that staff, reminded me of Tao Ren from Shaman King.
OK, was that a pointless fight or what?
I can see why Grandpa Gohan works with Anine part time. ;)
Nice coincidence wasn't it that the materials needed they already had.
LMAO moment. I didn't get the lines perfect but it was still so funny. GG was so against Goku doing it and Anine just says that one line and he changes his mind. I couldn't stop laughing. :
Grandpa Gohan - "the plan is folly, it won't work."
Anine - "Your grandson has the Bansho Fan."
GG - "I understand."
It was nice to see the PowerPole get used.
It was a nice ending.
I'm gonna miss Mr. Narrator!! Could've used ya in GT!
Overall an A. I liked the episode, it was a nice, cute and fast way to put an end to the DragonBall part and I liked how they segweyed at the end to stay tuned for DBZ. This little saga was OK, it just seemed that they rushed the ending, it took a couple of episodes to find everything he needs for like 3 seconds..The only other thing I didn't like about this little saga was how rude Goku got. It seems once he got a woman now and he's the Martial Arts champ, he got a little high and mighty attitude, other than that it was a good episode.

I like the dialogue at the end of the Japanese version better.

English Narrator: "For the further adventures of Goku and his friends, be sure to watch Dragon Ball Z!"

Japanese Narrator: "The next story takes place a full 5 years from now!" (And then it would cut to the credits, followed by a DBZ-style preview for episode 1 of DBZ.)

And so it ends... It was a cute ending. Goku in the white tux was an interesting look:p Geez, so how long was the Ox King actually in that fire? And the dress didn't get a scratch. Is Goku committing elderly abuse with his grandfather? Let's see:
- Goku crushes Gohan to death.
- Goku kicks Gohan's ass at Baba's house.
- Goku shoves his protesting grandpa away while trying to turn off the furnace.

Gohan's omen about Goku and Chichi having a wonderful life together:

This also marks the last appearance of the Turtle suit's color scheme of red Gi, blue wristbands and black sash, and yellow Turtle sign. Does anyone think DBZ should have kept this color scheme?

Lovely scene at the wedding. Too bad things didn't work out as one would hope. Oh well, the best that can be said is that Goku and Chichi were blissfully unaware of what was going to happen. I hope those five years as newlyweds and parents (before Raditz came) were happy ones.

I think Baba was only able to see little Gohan in her crystal ball. It is a fact that the witch was unable to predict the Saiya-jin Saga or its outcome.

Goodbye DB!

Filler or not, I think this turned out to be a much better ending than Dragonball Z. It was a nice break from the epic save the world situations and instead it was one more chance to put more focus on the characters. As far as Dragonball/Z sagas go, this was fairly short and to the point. Each episode did a fairly good job of advancing the plot and the pacing was much tighter than usual. For once, Toei's own material came out pretty good.

I agree. But what is with the ending of the DB/DBZ series that makes Goku so darn rude. He was rude in some episodes in this filler saga for DB and at the end of DBZ he goes off with Uub to train instead of being with his family. He looked real selfish there. I did enjoy the DB ending though better, although it was a bit rushed the last episode.

Well Goku never was the most polite person and he was doing it for a good cause.

Yeah but he never did it to people who cared about him and whom I thought he respected. He yelled at the turtle and demanded where was Roshi, yup, not master roshi, just roshi. and then he didn't listen to his Grandpa Gohan and even knocked him to the floor. Those two things were pretty classless.

That is one thing that really irked me about this episode. Goku seemed very out of character at points. It is not at all like him to get very flustered and rude, even when his friends are in danger. In the past when he has been "rude" it has been more out of lack of knowledge of social etiquette than actual rudeness. In parts of today's episode it was just plain old selfish, mean rudeness.

That's because GT had the only "ending" ending (from what I heard). No loose ends, no need to make more stories, it just brought things full circle and made us realize why we liked the Dragonball Saga so much....

.... which is more then I can say for the rest of GT (based on what I heard of course).

It may not be the happiest ending, but I think it is a more satisfying ending than Dragonball Z. At least in GT Goku has a good reason for leaving everything behind. I really liked Dragonball's ending, but it isn't all that much of a true ending since they tell you to stay tuned for new adventures.

I disagree. DBZ ended with Goku screwing his family, but at least there was the hope that he would redeem himself. GT makes sure that there is no chance of a redemption. Once again does he blow his family, and this time its for good. Goku is made to look even worse (okay, he can make a goodbye to Krillin, Piccolo, and Vegeta, but he sees no reason to give a goodbye to his wife or his sons?).
SLAYERS NEXT did the same ending, but I thought that series handled it better. Lina sacrifices herself to be one with chaos (and like Goku, it appeared to be a destiny that had to happen). Her friends and allies don't like this one bit, and one of them convinces her not to leave them forever. Thus Lina's destiny was changed. Couldn't the same be said for Goku? Somebody in GT should have followed NEXT Martina's suit and said something akin to her line, "What's the use of saving our lives, if you're not gonna be there with us?!"
I'm sorry, but GT's ending is unsatisfying and depressing. I hope to never watch it.

I wouldn't say Goku screwed over his family in GT. He made the decision to leave them so he could bring back to life all those that had been killed. A sad ending for Goku's family, but I wouldn't say he was screwing them over. It was for an infinitely better reason than in Z.

GT seems to portray that Goku cares nothing about his family. They love him, but he doesn't seem to care about them much in return. The fact that he makes no goodbye to his family but has time for Krillin and Piccolo exemplifies this.
Okay, I can agree in the idea that GT Goku had a better reason for leaving than Z Goku, but it doesn't change the fact that Goku has had a lousy record as a family man, and saw no reason to do anything about it.
Of course, this is GT. That series isn't written on stone. The ending to Z, cruel as it is, leaves things open for the possibility that Goku did return and redeem himself.
