My other thread got me to thinking, so I have some questions about Lupin DVDs:

Given that Lupin will probably not be returning to AS, the only way I will get to see the rest of the series is if I buy the dvds. [CURSE YOU WS!!!] Which means I probably won't do, because so far dvds are too expensive and people keep telling me the dvds have the episodes out of order. I may wait until the future, so I can pick up a box set, but I don't know if they have or will be making one.

So the questions are: Are the eps in order? Will there ever be a box set? What are the odds the price will drop a little?

No box sets from what I know of.

The only episode that is out of order is the infamous episode, "To Be or Nazi Be", which will finally be released in January.

That very same volume will also contain "Little Princess of Darkness", the last episode to air on Adult Swim, so it seems like a good starting point.

I myself will begin with that one when it comes out.

Does it matter what order the episodes are in? I don't think I once saw two nights of Lupin in a row while it was airing on AS because of other engagements, and it never detracted from my viewing pleasure.

I doubt there will ever be a box set. Geneon said that if sales don't pick up, it won't have the money to continue dubbing the series.

Don't know if that means future Geneon Lupin releases will be dub-only or if Geneon will cease releasing Lupin entirely, but I fear that it means the latter.

Do you mean sub-only? Because releasing it sub-only would probably be a lot cheaper, not to mention there isn't really a point of dubbing a show THIS old if they're not shooting for TV broadcast...

Oh I hope they keep dubbing it. I know everyone hates the dub, but I really like it. I think sales of this show will increase if the stores drop the price just a bit. You just can't charge regular series (13\26 eps) dvd price for a long series. When will these companies learn that?

I prefer subs over anything else..

but I can't help but love the Dub Cast of Lupin III TV.. just something about those actors/actresses..

I really think that Pioneer should have released this in sets like City Hunter, Your Under Arrest and Macross..

I don't think I'd buy the DVD's without a dub unless they made the DVDs close to $3 per episode. Pioneer's (I refuse to recognize the name change) dub cast is one of the best the Lupin series has had. They're true to the characters and make an already fun show even better. Sure, the otaku may not care much for the scripts, but frankly otaku are generally sad, sad human beings.

I prefer subs over anything else...Yeah, a good sub just can't be beating when you're hurting like an ethiopian. Just the other day, I was way hungry and ordered a J. J. Gargantuan sub with genoa salami, tureky, ham, roastbeef, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, oil, vinegar, and spicy brown mustard on french bread and it really hit the spot.

It kind of confuses me how you people can compare food to reggae music, but whatever, I guess everything can be compared on some level...

That sounds truly beautiful... Truly you are a master of the submarine sandwich.

I salute you.

The best bet would be to just go with the Lupin movies and OVA's if you just want Lupin, or the manga. The thing about that is it's kind of hard to figure out which version to get from which distributor. Rupan anyone?

Pioneer definatley has the best overall dub cast for Lupin. I'm also very partial to Manga's Cagliostro dub cast. Watching Lupin subbed is great too. Yasuo Yamada beats out all the other Lupin VA's. :D

It's a shame that Pioneer will probably never get up to the Miyazaki episodes of the series (which are near the end). I own the old Streamline VHS of these episodes but the dubbing sucks in comparison.

I liked the casting of the Pioneer dubs the best and its too bad they won't be on TV anymore. However, Streamline's dubscript of the Mamo movie owns over Pioneer's newer one (wow, Pioneer did a lot more tampering with that movie than Carl Macek did  ).

I too like Pioneer's cast and want the series back. Perhaps if Pioneer released later episodes of the series (is the animation better?) it may do better.

And I'd also like them to release more movies. Does Pioneer have the rights to any other movies, or does FUNimation own them all?

Y'know what would spark sales? A brand-new Lupin movie. Especially if, by some miracle, it were released in theaters.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that. There was supposed to be a live action Lupin III movie, what happened to it?

Still in the works, I believe. They're still writing the script as far as I know.

And when I say a Lupin movie should be released into theaters, I mean a kick-ass, animated, wide-release movie.

Hmm. That's interesting that they're not selling well, since Lupin DVDs never stay on the shelves more than a few weeks in every place that I've been to.

There have been a few TV specials/OAVs that have not been licensed for US release. These include "Hemingway's Papers", "Return of Pycal" (which is about a villian from the first Lupin TV series, not shown on AS), and the recent "Chapter 0". I think "Albatross Connecion" may be another one.

As mentioned, Manga Ent. and AnimEigo have "Cagliostro" and "Fuma Conspiracy".

I agree completely. I often wonder how some anime movies would do if they got a wide release.

There are plans for the DVDs to be anamorphic letterbox.
