View Full Version : Another Sealab-style parody?
With Sealab on the ropes, and a lot of old shows ripe for the spoofing, I ask one question.
Would it be a good idea to take an old Hanna-Barbera cartoon and spoof it? And if so, which one?
My personal choice? Challenge of the Go-Bots. :p

I think that's a good idea. Not sure with which one, but right now I'd go with Herculoids.

I don't know a Hanna Barbera show (between Sealab, Space Ghost, Birdman and Aquaman, I think HB is pretty much covered) but I was thinking of another type of spoof show. One that satirized the holy grail of... anime. More specfically, Dragon Ball. More specifically, a sort of Brak Show spoof of the Briefs Family of DBZ. But that's just me.

I think they need to take a Scooby Doo rip-off and redo it. Maybe a Phunky Phantom or Jabber Jaws rip-off. Or, if you're looking for something more obscure, Wacky Races or Yogi's Ark could work well.

Those were (These are?) the Days. That turn of the century cartoon that has a nice big ensemble cast like Sealab does. That could probbaly work well enough. Or maybe they could even slap together a few different "super hero" shows and make a new team or something.
But if they're gonna do anything with the Herculoids, I want to see how well they could pull off a serious show with the usual WS style animation.

I love that Brief's Family idea! Goku could be the annoying neighbor! Or simply Sea Labing Dragonball or DBZ would be hillarious... but would probably have too many bowel movement jokes.
Captain Planet could work very well. It's such a cory show that it's begging for the Sea Lab treatment.
How about Thundercats? It's great materal for screwing with! There were actually some bloopers released of the actors cussing and saying things you'd never expect in any given seen of Thundercats. They could remaster that and use it with the coinsiding footage.
Mobile Suit Gundam has been brought up in the past, and I'll give my thumbs up for that.
I'd personally love to see them screw with classic TMNT. Middle-aged Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Mobile Suit Gundam deserves a remake, not a parody.

For you approval, I humbly sumbit the following:
A GI Joe parody in the style of the Fenslerfilm PSAs (the link escapes me, it's in the depths of the Toonami board last I saw). How this could possibly work for 15 minutes... no idea. If they could make the Joe's wild personalities consistant, and interact with eachother, I'd be pretty impressed.
Snake Eyes would be comedy GOLD. They could make the guy say anything.
Never'd happen, but the idea amuses me so.

Could WS get the copyrights for Go-Bots? Isn't more or less owned by Hasbro?
If we're going with licensed HB toons, they could do a combo of the animated versions of Happy Days, Laverne and Shirly, Laverne and Shirly in the Army, and occasionall Mork and Mindy. They could even hire the actors back as VA's.
(That's all I can think of. Fortunately we're spared a Joanie Loves Chuacie toon, although it would be nice to see the live-action once or twice to see what it was like).
As for non-licensed HB toons, how about Josie and the Pussy Cats/Josie and the Pussy Cats in Space? Like Scooby, yet different enough to have its own following and CN wouldn't have to risk "screwing up" the Scoob franchise by making adult material.
(Not that they would actually do that with Scoob, EXCEPT for the one ep of Birdman, and of course they can spoof the Justice FRIENDS but not the Justice LEAGUE.)

Go-bots is a great idea !! I'd watch every episode... tape them.... and buy the DVDs when they came out. Go-bots have been long the subject of humor among TransFans.... and a SL2020 styled Go-bots would go over big with me.
It would be great to have cameo's from all the other 80's cartoons... GI Joe, Transformers, ThunderCats, Voltron, My Little Pony, CareBears, Insectors( although not a show, would still be funny ), He-man/SHe-ra, SilverHawks.... all set against Go-bots.
Its comedy GOLD ! :D
I'd say CN/AS/WS would be out of it's mind not to explore this idea.

It's a shame we never get new episodes of Birdman. There are plenty of old shows to make fun of. Instead of creating a whole new series, they can just attack each show for 12 minutes in Birdman. They should have plenty of material to fill that short period of time.
Unfortunately, we seldom get new episodes of Birdman and many of the new episodes just make fun of other Birdman characters rather than other HB series.
1. Last time I checked, Go-Bots the cartoon was owned by Hanna-Barbera. I'm pretty sure Hasbro wouldn't make any objections to mocking the defeated competition.
2. All those other guys are still active franchises. Can't be spoofed. But there's lots of HB crap to spoof with Go-Bots.

Oops  , I thought Go-Bots were actually some dumbdowned Transformers show from the actual people who made Transformers, not a rip-off.
But now they have new toys from Hasbro called "Transformers Go-Bots". Did HB sell the rights, is Hasbro just leasing the name, are they working togther, or something else that I missed?
Hasbro bought the Tonka, the company that made Go-Bots. That's why Leader-1 is Megs ***** in Armada, and there's a line called TF Go-Bots.
However, they don't own the toon. Hanna-Barbera does. And do you think they'd mind more Go-Bots bashing?

Eh, I think some people are focusing too much on the idea of parodying a show instead of just using the technique to make that show. I mean, sure, Sealab 2020 was a crappy HB show, but that's not why Sealab 2021 is funny.
Really, the show chosen is irrelevant; and if WS wishes to do another cut & paste styled show, I'd say go for it (AS could use some more comedic original material, anyway, which we are luckily getting at least 3 shows in 2004).
I'm choosing Go-Bots because there's so much to make fun of. The original show, anime, action toons, robots and people, the list goes on...

Well here is the thing about paradies... it's all legal. As long as it's done in fun and not out right slander... it's okay to make fun of any show/line, doesn't matter if it's active or not.
Truth is, there's so much funny that comes with Go-bots... I'm sure there is no need for cameos ( except for a TF or two to push them around or just laugh at them ).
I just can't get the picture out of my head of Scooter with the voice of MeatWad. :D

Here's an idea for a cartoon remix: Any Hanna-Barbera Cartoon Character (i.e Thundarr) or a Robot who works as a Freelance Private Eye. :p
Even so, Hasbro wouldn't like it if an adult cartoon series and a line of toys aimed at boys 2 - 5 shared the same name. Ain't gonna happen any time soon.
I still say that a Thundarr the Barbarian series would be perfect.
Hasbro would love nothing more than mocking the defeated competition. They could always change the name again. I mean, Gobots is their third name for their kiddie line.
They could always just change the name "Go-Bots", you know, and make it into something completely different like the "Schmo-Bots" (bad example, I know). People would still know what it is.
(the second thing that came to my mind was the Gay-Bots, but somehow I don't see THAT flying...)

How about a "slacker" comedy transformed from the Hair Bear Bunch?
Hair, Square, and Booby in the Wonderland Zoo. The original was already twisted enough (Hair was a cross between Yogi Bear and Top Cat in a zoo tangled up in a big ol' yellow afro), but the character designs were already out there. Peevely and Botch still run the zoo. Just imagine what WS could do with those characters (and they gotta let mc chris voice Booby).
Heck, I'd like to see WS make a comedy out of something that won't further disrespect Alex Toth's contributions to the animation world.
The best idea in a long time, and no way to pitch it. :(

I really think another Harvey Birdman style cartoon would be great. One that deals with the entire Hanna Barberra world of cartoons.
The only spark in my brain is maybe a cartoon about a superhero and his friends (maybe multilple heroes) living in the city, just day to day life. Maybe fighting some crime, doing some laundry, sort-of like "The Tick" except with old HB toons.. Maybe Space Ghost could be the main character, or maybe even a villian instead of a hero. So many to choose from!!

Another vote for using Thundarr. It's got a lot to work with for skewering just about anything, with a fairly large cast to give voice to. It was so bad that it deserves the AS treatment. Because it's vaguely anime-ish, a Thundarr show might even draw the anime fans' attention to the AS comedies. (^_*)

Sorry if the Go-bots thing has been done to death, but I had a few more questions:
1. So was it like every other toy line-based cartoon where the toy company gets a studio to make this, or did Hanna-Barbara come up with the show itself and merchandise soon followed? I'm assuming its the first since the toy company sold the rights for the toys to Takara.
2. If that's the case, and as Beatdigga says, HB owns the toon, something with the deal the 2 parties formed, would that mean its something like how they can make all those Justice Friends spoofs in the commercials and in HarveyBirdman, or is it like the parodying in FG, or am I being a complete moron and missing something else?
3. If they did have to rename it, which considering how Sealab 2020 was a 1-season flop that few knew of before 2021, and the mainstream isn't going to know or care what a TF-ripoff is called, giving them new names shouldn't be a problem, wouldn't they still need the rights to the way the robots look, or was that part of the contract?
Thanks!

Mr. T parodies are like fine wine, in that they become better with age. Primarily because it becomes harder and harder to believe that there was a time when people actually took the guy seriously.
I see some name changes, (Go-Bots will be changed) but the title, characters, and the like belong to Hanna-Barberra. The majority of the Go-Bot names (save for Leader-1, Gobotron, and probably a few others) have had their rights expired, meaning that they're fair game.
Besides, Hasbro would see this as mocking the vanquished competition.

Thanks again :D Hmm, seems like there's a slim chance, but I doubt WS would bother or even want to use something like that, since they prefer to make SGC2C/Sealab style of shows of characters they remember as kids.
Here's another idea:The Banana Splits!
SERIUOSLY, think about it for a moment. They can have the WS gang in suits (or have their voices put over them while some intern gets stuck wearing them), doing AS-style skits. Instead of producing new cartoons to make up the meat+potatoes of the program, they could use the other WS shows. ALTHOUGH that would mean they would have to be trimmed down.
On the other hand, they could be used to replace the black+white cards, which HOPEFULLY never happens or at least not for a very long time :(
OR the BEST scenario would be instead of making it an actual show, more or less have them wear Banana Split costumes in some of the b&w cards.
Yes, its live action, but so is the Blair Witch-homaging commercials, the puppet shows, misc stuff like the Expo awhile back, and the new lame thing on Friday. Plus, its the Banana Splits! They're classic, random insanity. A bunch of guys stuck in a lame costumes, telling lame puns, defying the laws of physics or logic, AND riding around in go-carts at the same amusement park the Bradys went to! Okay, I actually have a good question this time ( well, either that, or its not and I'm an idiot again :p ):
Now, you've all graciously explained parody, satire, and all that ( thank you! ). One thing still puzzles me. That Aquaman show in Latin America that CN thinks will destroy the Justice League show's image, as if it could ( and they have had all those commercials that parody it, and the VERY adult ep of Birdman ).
ANYWAY, the question I have is this: Obviously its not parody or satire in the sense that theyu would have to get permission form D.C. to do a whole series. Did they have to get a new license ( which I'm assuming is the correct answer ) and set up the whole payment/royalities/whatever, or is it because of the old contract that may or may not be extended or renewed
(All those HB Justice League, Batman + Superman cartoons, Aquaman, ASD those "censored" Batmans on AS that they use to show until recently obvioulsy means those shows were still allowed to be shown back then)
If its some kind of deal that extends from old contracts or some new deal regardless that can benifit both parties, would it be too hard to make new SGC2C/Sealab style shows of other D.C. parties?
Or for that matter, what about old Marvel cartoons if they had a similiar deal? THEN again, I guess this must be separate case, since we could assume the same for ANY show based on another company's works, which would REALLY be pushing it!
( You can tell I know diddly-squat about legal affairs  )
Still, would be cool to SGC2C/SL2021 that old Thing cartoon where some geeky, teenage, human Ben Grimm has to use a magical ring to become the Thing :anime:
