I remember how in the original script Duke was meant to die as Optimus Prime had died in Transformers: The Movie, but Optimus' death caused controversary (so much that they had to bring him back to life) so Duke's death was changed to a coma, my question is did he ever wake up?

Actually, Duke's death was changed at the last possible minute.
As animated, Duke clearly dies. Look at the animation, mute the sound... it's pretty damn obvious that it's meant to be his death scene. Dialogue was dubbed in where the actors said "He's in a coma" instead of "He's dead". And at the last minute there is a really awkward, cheesy line overdubbed saying "He just woke up! He'll be okay!". Obviously, that wasn't the intent.
So he did wake up, just listen to the end. But he was intended to die.

I believe that right before the movie's end, somebody quickly notes that Duke has recovered from his coma, and that "he's gonna be okay!" And like the other "coma moment", it's painfully obvious that it was edited in.
*edit* Whoops, looks like someone else beat me to it. Uh, consider this "supplementary knowledge", or something.

It's obvious that he died. It's basically all the Transformers' fault that Duke was in a coma. I heard when they said that they'll try to incorporate this fascinating new thing (death) in G.I. Joe, then they would work it in Transformers. But as TF was released before, I think just the fact that the Autobots died really quickly and just so surprisingly that people were against it and Duke just fell into a coma instead.
The movie would've been SO much better that way.
And then Optimus dies again, while the G.I. Joe franchise goes stagnant.

And no he never actually "woke up" like its been said before especially since he has never been in a episode afterwards. The ending was by ALL means rushed ever since the "Optmius Prime Death" controversy. Quite unfortunate really since the ending makes all the other death cover-ups on the TV series look quite logical in comparison. (Oh well it was at least the only significant flaw in that movie IMO.) And sadly the irony of Duke's death is that it was initially used to counteract Robotech on how despite how hacked up it was it didn't totally avoid death.

Well,,the DIC eps WERE in continuity,,but most fans dont like to talk about those eps (personally, i wonder if any scripts from the scrapped 3rd season of GI Joe are floating out there, or if they were even written,,i've seen sunbow model sheets for 1987 characters, so i know it was at least partly completed).

I don't remember much about the G.I. Joe: Operation Dragonfly series. I don't beleve that Duke returned after the movie. I know that Cobra Commander was changed back into a human and got his revenage at Serpentor for turning him into a snake.

The strange thing is that at the end of the movie when it is announced that Duke has recovered the Joe team erupts into cheers. This must mean that they were doing the same cheer in the original cut where Duke has died. Pretty heartless if you ask me. Maybe they didn't care too much for the old boy.

And then the Japanese kill him again.
Sad, huh? They wanted to counterract Robotech, thought it was a bad idea, and covered it up, and that was a worse idea.

Well technically,if it weren't for the edit, there wouldn't have been anything said about Duke in that scene. They were just cheering because they had finally defeated Cobra.I think the scene where Falcon is talking to duke "in the sky" is supposed to be when the subject of duke was supposed to have been brought up again.

Actually, he was in a few DIC episodes around the time his second (non-Tiger Force) incarnation was released in figure form. As a matter of fact, he was pratically the star in the "Greatest Evil" two-parter, which had Falcon becoming a drug addict.

I hated it when Duke died and then they go ahead and edit the dialogue before the movie release because of Optimus' death. Yes I know it was a very sad loss, but Optimus' death added the heartbreaking drama to the movie which we still look back on to this day. Editing the lines of Duke's death rather than taking out the scene and reanimating it made that dramatic scene look like another stupid G.I. Joe episode screw up. And then the ever so stupid added cheers and coments after defeating Cobra wasn't necessary. I don't care what the fans think. He should've died like Optimus. The series allready fell apart after the movie. No reason to destroy the show's image anymore.
