How do you check to see how fast the processor is on a computer? I bought a used laptop from a friend, and I'd like to see how many Mhz it runs at.
I forgot how to do it. I know it's something simple.

If he uses windows right click on my computer then go into the hardware tab. Next click on device manager and look for processors(in device manager of course). Click on the plus sign next to it,and what you want should be right next it it. For example mine says 2ghz. Otherwise, I'm not sure about mac users.

It's Windows. 98 to be specific.
Yeah, I tried that. I went to device manager but nothing says processor on it.
Could one of these be another way of saying Processor?
-CDROM
-Disk Drives
-Display Adapters
-Floppy Disk Controllers
-Hard Disk Controllers
-Keyboard
-Monitor
-Mouse
-Network Adapters
-PCMCIA socket
-Ports (COM & LPT)
-Sound, video and game controllers
-System Devices
-Universal
I know what most of these are for, and none of the ones I recognize is the CPU.

No processor selection? Hm..... This probably sounds stupid ,but maybe it tells you on one of the startup screens(mine does).

If you know the brand and model you can find out the processor speed on the manufacture's website.

Unless "1200xx" means "1235". Even then, I couldn't get any info on it. Just "how to buy".

Sandra will tell you more about your computer than you would ever want to know including processor speeds:

Get the SANDRA Standard, which is free.

Get the SANDRA Standard, which is free. Thanks, but I'd rather not use programs I am unfamiliar with on that computer. Plus, it doesn't have a working modem. I'd have to download it to the one I'm on now, then burn a CD to transfer it. Too much work.
There's a button you hit during Windows bootup that gives you system information. I need to find out what it is.
It's one of the Function keys.

It should be under System Summary, right off of the main system information screen. Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information.
I don't know about 98, but with XP it says Processor, and the speed, about 1/3 of the way down the page.

233 mhz. Man that's slow. None of my games will work.
Thanks people. When I rule the world, your kindness will not be forgotten.

Are you sure it's 1200xx?
I ran a search (http://productfinder.support.hp.com/tps/ProductFinder?h_tool=prodhomes%2Csoftware&h_lang=en&h_query=Compaq+Presario+1200+&Submit.x=6&Submit.y=4) and this model doesn't show up on the Compaq homepage.
I performed a deeper search and found this site (http://liquidmall.com/compaq_presario1.htm).
My best guess is your notebook is at least 475MHz.

DirectX diagnostic should be able to produce a name string for the CPU. Start/Run/dxdiag
