This is a very interesting link. You go to the Gender Genie, paste in something you've written, and it uses an algorithm to identify you as either a male or a female. It also breaks down what words are considered *male* words and which are considered *female* and calculates the score according to their use in the written piece. That's a very basic description.
Lot's of people, over 70 percent, say it is correct. The bad news, if you believe what it says, than I am a guy. Yes, I pasted in numerous things I have written and only once did it identify me as female. The other 10 or so times, it said I was a guy. Oh my....
The Gender Genie (http://www.bookblog.net/gender/genie.html)
Anyway, have fun with it, and tell me if it's right on (like the poll seems to point to) or if it's way off. :D I know it's way off for me, but who knows, maybe I'm an anomaly.
In fact, pasting in this very post gives me a break down like so:
Female Score: 192
Male Score: 406
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

Cool, I tried it out a couple of times with emails I'd sent to friends.
The Genie identified me correctly as female every time!

I used a longer post from something I did on the Entertainment board, and it spit back that I was a guy
Female Score: 68
Male Score: 572
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!
Which is correct!

Howdy,
According to a post last August on Neil Gaiman's weblog (http://www.neilgaiman.com/journal/2003_08_17_archive.asp) (on Aug 22, 2003):
I tried it on several pieces of mine, and it was convinced the author was male in each case. Tried it on writings of other people, and it called gender correctly each time. Then, because I wanted to make things harder for it, I went and checked the writings of several transgendered people, and in each case it accurately called the gender of the writer as the one that the person had elected.
Apparently it only calls it correctly about 51% of the time, according to the "Am I Right?" stats, which may mean that I just got lucky...
That means a biological male who flopped to female got pegged as a female by the Gender Genie. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine if that increases or decreases its accuracy.
(Pegs me as male for the few things I've thrown at it, although 1 was close. Also note that the instructions say that 500+ word pieces provide more accuracy.)

Close... ,but correct.
Apparently chainsaw arms and crossbows(for that zombie slaying action) are bearly manly enough for it.

The first piece I did was over 500 words, and it said I was a dude. Though, the first one was closer than the other instances afterward.
And, one piece I wrote for my English class did peg me as a female, and that was probably over 500 words.
But most of the time, it calls me a guy. :)

That was pretty intresting and accurate. Although I don't think it's worth going through again to write. I kinda just wrote randomly for those words in the first place.

And it says I'm a male! We should write each other's stuff. ;););)
Just kidding, but sometimes this thing is really on, and sometimes it's really really off, like saying I am a dude, when I am most certainly a woman. :)

Well, that's a relief! Maybe if I put other stuff I wrote, it'd be different. Oh, well.

We tinkered with this a bit in my Linguistics class a few weeks ago. I still have my results. The selection used, for you information, was a somewhat lengthy short story I wrote last december.
Words: 6603
Female Score: 7728
Male Score: 6724
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: female!
That's not accurate, but I don't really mind the result.
If anyone so much as coughs the word, "metrosexual," you will suffer my glorious wrath...once I get some stamps.

Funny thing is that it's supposed to be almost 80% accurate according to the creators, and the poll on the site says it's over 70%.
But it looks like we are the misfits. Good I say!
It's all of you, me, and Space Dracula. Misfits unite! :D

So, what, are we an alternative rock band now?

depends on how I test it. my blog entries and bullitin board mostly skew male according to the site, though sometimes it skews female (30-40 percent), and when tested not as blog entries but as fiction or non fiction, it always returns female. my research papers and literary analysises turn up male no matter what.

After further analysis, I find that it's accurate, in that it registers me as male, slightly more than 50% of the time.
