OK, this is pretty strange, just had to post it here, cause I found it really interesting, strange, and just plain crazy.

Student faces criminal charges for alleged 25 cent cheese theft

Corey Campbell says he offered to pay for the 25 cents worth of cheese he's accused of stealing.

(10/24/03 - DEER PARK) — A Deer Park High School student is facing criminal charges for what he and his parents call a strange case of school discipline.

He's accused of stealing 25 cents worth of melted cheese from the school cafeteria. The cheese controversy may cost the district a lot more than that.

Tenth-grader Corey Campbell says he was just trying to get lunch in a crowded cafeteria on Tuesday when the cheese controversy began.

"I walked in and I got cheese sticks and fries," Campbell said. "And then I went and paid for it."

He forgot his marinara dipping sauce and went back to get it. He grabbed some melted cheese, too, and then started back to his table.

"I was walking out of the door and the lady called me over," Campbell said. "I said okay. She asked me what I had, and I told her cheese. She told me that cost 25 cents and I said 'OK, let me give you 25 cents for this cheese'. And she said 'No. Give me your ID'."

The next thing Campbell knew, Deer Park Police were giving him a ticket.

"The ticket says this is a Theft, Class-C violation, including one plastic container of melted cheese," said Corey's Mom, Donna Campbell. "It's valued at 25 cents."

Money Corey offered to hand it over, but the school said to tell it to the judge.

"There is a problem here, and this is how we have chosen to deal with that problem," said Matt Lucas with Deer Park ISD.

By the time this case works its way through court, a judge, a bailiff, a prosecutor, two clerks, the ticket-writing cop and a jury will all be paid for about two hours of work just on this case. The estimated cost for these services will be paid for by Deer Park taxpayers in the form of $396.

"There is a cost to the school district as well," said Lucas.

In this case, the cost to the school is a quarter. Matt Campbell says its all a mistake.

"I really wasn't trying to steal," Campbell said. "I would have paid for it had I known it cost a quarter. I found it cost a quarter, and I guess I'm going to pay for it."

If charged, Campbell will receive a fine of $150, not to mention the cost of a defense attorney.

Deer Park officials tell Eyewitness News the school has one to five cheese thefts per week and this is how they will continue to handle the suspected thefts.

Is it just me, or is this insane? I mean, people make mistakes. I accidently walked out of the snack-bar at school without paying, but I came back, paid, and the people were really nice. They even thanked me for being honest. The guy wasn't even given a chance to dig a quarter out of his pocket according to the story. I don't get this.

Discuss. :D

The article says if he's charged, he'll get $150 in fines, but the cheese was only 25 cents.

Under some interpretations of the three-strikes law, people have gotten 20 years to life for things of similar magnitude.

Hey, I thought it was funny and kind of strange. If you don't like it, don't read it. I just found it weird and thought maybe someone would be as interested as I originally was.

Geez, I never post threads here, guess I should keep my articles to myself. :D

I wasn't implying that you shouldn't have posted it. That was just my reaction to it. There's been so much of this type of stuff going down lately that it's starting to get boring. If you have any other silly articles, then by all means post them. :D

Ha. Ha. Ha. I'm just bursting with laughter.

As for the article, this took place in Texas, so I'm not surprise. There's a lot of %@! regulations and laws in Texas.

Seriously, this story interested me a lot because it's focus is cheese and, as everyone knows, cheese is funny.

:D:D:D

Anyway, I love what was written on the ticket too. Cheese theft. 25 cent cheese theft....

If I were a cop, I would seriously not be able to keep a straight face as I wrote it out.

what I want to know is....who ratted him out? *rimshot*

seriously though, all this fuss over 25 cents worth of school cafeteria cheese? and it's not even the genuine article either it's that processed stuff, unless this is like some super-rich school, I guess it's like Bill maher said "Zero tolerance policies are an excuse not to think"

I want to know what is wrong with judges these days.

Did you know that constitutionally a judge has the right to look at a case, say it's stupid, and toss it out of his sight never to be heard from again? How are cases of people suing mcdonalds for making them fat, or the school fining $150 for a 25 cent cheese thing getting this far? If I was a judge I'd call the school, call them a bunch of dumbasses and spend the rest of the day on the golf course (or whatever the judge enjoys doing in his spare time).

I also enjoy the rolleyes feature

Good Grief, he said he would pay for the cheap cheese but they wouldn't listen. That is not right.

I bet they want him to pay the $150 in quarters
