Ok, so I called AOL to cancel our account. In the offers that ensued, they offered a $2.95/mo. plan in which we'd be able to keep our email and screen names. Personally, I havent used my AOL address in over 5 years, so I couldn't care squat, but when I asked whether I could quit and continue using the s/n's using AIM, they said that I wouldn't be able to. And in fact that AIM was going to turn into a pay service at the end of November. So I held off cancelling for now, until I can get my facts straight.

Personally, I find this kinda hard to believe, if not totally bogus. Has anyone heard any news on this?

Edit: I just finished talking with an online rep, who said it was going to remain free. What a bastard (the phone guy).

Really? I just started using AIM too. I hope it's not the truth. I did a search on Google news about it but didnt see anything. But it wouldn't surprise me at all. Hell, we'll probably see client licenses for IM services soon.

Has anyone here who recently cancelled AOL (within the last 3 months) had any problems using their existing s/n's with AIM afterward?

I think they only mean you can't use that particular screen name. AIM is still free, you'll just have to get a new screen name. As far as I can tell it's still free, i've seen no news or e-mails that would make me believe otherwise.

That's weird, my family stopped using AOL last year and they froze our account after we stopped paying on it. We never got that pay for AIM thing, in fact our accounts still work, we would just have to pay on them in order to access'em. I still have a mailbox on my AIM that's relating to me still getting mail at my AOL account, hehheh.

Phew...you scared me for a second, man. I don't think AOL realizes how many people they've already angered, and how many more people will dump their service had this happened.

Phew.
