View Full Version : What's My Generation?

I was writing a theology paper and the question popped into my head: What's my generation called?

The baby-boomers were born between the mid-1940s to the early 1950s. Generation Jones is for people who are too young to be boomers but too young to be Generation X. Generation X are those who were of age in the early 1990s. Generation Y is filled with people that are graduating college and off in career land already.

So where the heck am I? And where are you? And has there been a "technical" term for it?

Generations as I understand since WWII
Baby Boomers: born between 1946 and 1963
Generation X: 1964-1980
Generation Y: 1980-mid 90s

I read somewhere that Generation Y is interchangeably called the "Bridgers", as they "bridge" into the new millennium. Yeah, it's not that cool a term. :disappoin

I'm generation Y....that name is so not cool. I thought I was a Generation Xer myself....but it does seem fitting that people over 23 years old CALL themselves GenXers...

I always wondered about this myself. What I'd like to know is why every generation has a name attributed to them. Did it all start with the Baby-Boomers? Or were there generation specific names before that?

I guess, I'd be a bridger -- Connecting X to Z?

Generation Y by one year????

That's not cool. Y is such a lame letter. Well, actually, i don't have any problems with the letter Y, it's a fine letter. I just don't want it to represent my generations. Especially since they told me I was generation X until recently. That's like when they change your zip code or something. Not cool. :p

Generation Y?

But I WANT TO BE GENERATION Z

Z is for Z-MAN , that's good enough for me.

Z is for Z-MAN , that's good enough for me.

Z is for Z-MAN , that's good enough for me.

OH Z-MAN Z-MAN Z-MAN starts with Z.

I 've heard somewhere that "Generation Y" is actually known as "The Millenials". Don't ask me where.

I've heard us called the "9/11 Generation", for what it's worth.

[I've heard us called the Net Gen by a few professors here. Maybe that's what it's going to become?

If you're not old enough to be Gen X then you must be Gen Y.

The generation immediately before the boomers has been called the Silent Generation, the one before that the Depression generation, then the GI generation, then the Lost Generation...

The Lost Generation? Now *that* is a cool name. Why can't we have a name like that?

I would say I'm early Generation Y, although I don't really see anything that important about the generations (specfically) since Generation X, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah I've definitely seen this, and I think they are one and the same, although I'm not 100% sure. I think "the Millenials" might be what advertisers coined Gen Y with.

There is no defined period for Gen Xers and on...but I'm 25 and I consider myself part of Generation Y--The cast of "Friends" would be closer to Generation X--basically, aging 30 somethings at this point. I usually call Generation Y the "Me Generation." Socially we have been defined by fleeting trends and material concerns. We are very "Me" oriented. What's in it for me?

Exactly.

I have generally heard Me Generation applied to Generation X.

I've always considered myself Generation Y. I think that's kind of a silly name though, and a bit uncreative. I mean, what comes next, Generation Z? And then what? Generation AA, AB, AC, etc.?

I'll be a Generation Y, as in "Whyt the crap are we starting at X?"

I think the "official" name for the current generation (the generation after Generation X) is "Gen 13" (The comic by the same name eventually used it.), as in "The 13th Generation of American citizens since 1776". I could be wrong though.http://forums.toonzone.net/images/smilies/shrug.gif

My Fizzix teacher said that we'd be known as the "Digital Generation" because where the first to live mainly on many digital devices. Like many personal computers, cell phones, CD players, etc.
