Like, how they teach typing in school classes?

No. And I never intend to. I taught myself my own way of typing, and I stick to it. There's no real WAY to type, if you ask me. As long as you memorize the locations of the keys, it's fine.

I find my fingers start on the home keys but then I just go off and do whatever. I can stay completely on the home keys, but it takes longer than my random method. Still, I always start at the home keys, like I'm going to have a typing teacher bust down the door any minute and chastise me. :D

I use the "formal" method of typing, as that's just what I've gotten used to. I pretty much follow all the rules they teach, except I hit shift using whatever hand I feel like, instead of the one opposite to the key. Most of the "rules" just sort of feel natural to me, so I go with it. http://forums.toonzone.net/images/smilies/shrug.gif

Yup i do i guess, i think thats why i can type so fast. :D

I tried the whole "peck" thingy and i dosent work for me so i just stick with the "right" way

I start at the home keys and I just evolve into my own pattern from there. But I guess I should start learning how to type better, because my highest typing speed is still 46 wpm (words per minute)...and people can type at 100+ wpm..

I do...it's just how I learned. It does seem to be the most efficient way to type....I can type around 60 WPM on a good day, and I'm clumsy with my fingers.

The highest WPM that i got so far was a 91 and that was on a extreamly good day. I dont think that i could do that again even if my life depended on it.

Any one notice that when you go toa friends house or use a comp other than yours you seem to type slower, or is that just me???

This post took me 19.392 seconds to type. (stop watch :anime: )

Not me, I have a totally random typing method that I taught myself. I can usually type 75 or 80 wpm once I get going. My hands kind of move around the keyboard as they want to. I took a keyboarding class last year and the teacher got so frustrated with me because I couldn't type the "right" way and I got bad grades in technique:rolleyes::p:D Hey, I think it's funny:evil:

I use the home row keys. That's all I ever knew. I used to just peck at the letters, but now I find that applying the home row method just works better for me.

BTW, my highest WPM is 132 .

I was taught the home row method in a business class, but I alway's wound up just typing with no kind of style at all. It's a miracle I passed my class(I guess it helped I was the teacher pet  )anyway I'm trying to relearn the home row method so I can get a business job and put my certification to use.

Yup, I took typing in High School, and check it out, it actually came in handy!
(and can I just say, that when I took it, we got to use regular type writers. None of these newfangled fancy computer thingies!) :p

Ever since I took keyboarding back in high school, I've always used the home row keys, like I'm doing right now, as I'm typing this. I'm not especially fast, but it's a lot faster than when I had no idea how to type like that.

my previous reply was a joke. HA HA!!!

before i took a typing course in eigth grade, i used the "search and destroy" method. i'd stare at the keyboard searching for the proper key to push and when i found it i pressed it as hard as i could. but, after the keyboarding class, i really started to pick up on it and learn it well, the home row method that is. my fingers always seem to naturally find their way back to the home row after striking the desired key. when pushing the shift key or backspace though, i used whatever hand i feel like

Well my mom gave me some typing classes when I was a kid but I've pretty much taught myself to type. Mainly because of this board and all the writing I've been doing lately. I do it the "right" way. Just seems more normal to put your hands there. I have no idea what my WPM is because I mostly write fiction which require me to regularly stop and think about what happens next.

I use the "pecking" method. I never liked the "home row" method, I was too uncomfortable.

To tell you the truth, I don't know how I type. I don't use the home keys, I just...type. Kind of fast. (52 wpm). I make a few mistakes but not very minute.

This post was bought to you by the pecking method, courtesy of me, in 2003. Thank you for your patience.

I've managed to memorize the entire keyboard(Thanks mostly to playing way to many MMORPGs) So I just press whatever key i need to get to next, It doesn't really occur to me just how my hand gets there, as long as it does. I guess this is known as the "pecking" method.

Pecking Method:

n. used in typing.

1) staring at the keys, finding the one that you want, and mashing down on it.
