I believe you are refering to the series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. That was only ever a rumor I think. Also word came out that the series has apparently extended to 52 episodes over in Japan. Hopefully they can keep the quality up, the currently aired episodes have somewhat declined in story quality over time.

you're thinking of GitS: Stand Alone Complex.
Bandai and CN were negotiating about it, but there was a stall due to the fact that Bandai licensed the show months before it went on the air in Japan, so they wouldn't be able to air it on US TV for a while. it's still on the air there and is nearing its end though.

So any deal would theoretically take at least a few months to complete.

The show got extended to 52 episodes so it will still be on the air until October of next year. Somebody asked Jerry Chu when SAC will be released in Region 1 in his IRC channel, and he replied "soon." That doesn't really help much, but they might start releasing the series while it still running in Japan next year.
It really is a great show and perfect for Adult Swim. The show has a very competent and mature level of writing that doesn't feel the need to talk down to the audience. I have a feeling it will show up on AS eventually.

ok, if the Japanese broadcast is the hold up, were looking at Spring 2004 for the first 26 episodes GitS:TV, assuming CN doesn't have to wait for the whole 52. If that's the case, it's looking more like Spring 2005.
Not great news, but it still seems possible for Adult Swim.

The best we can hope for is the first few DVD's just before the holidays.
They just asked the Fansub groups to stop late in August. But, they also don't have word one about it on their web sight. But, they picked a voice actress about 6 months ago. But, they could not go into production for some reason. But, they might try to get it out before the next movie in spring 2004. But, but, but..........
My guess it will be late winter at best and late 2004 at worse, on DVD.
I don?t think going to 52 eps. will stop it or slow it down much. The DVD?s just might only come out every 2 months. They will try to stay on top of GITS:SAC to ramp up for the movie Dubbing process then return to the DVD?s. This will keep the Voice actors studio time tight and the same people. (If Dream Works hires the same company/actors for the movie.) The additional 26 eps. will air over the next year until October 2004 I believe.
Then 3 months after the DVD it would be on AS. AS is likely the best outlet and would need very few edits that I can think of using FLCL as a reference. There might be one or two shots of bare bodies (backsides from what I remember) but the violence should clear.
This is just my guess, little to no facts. But, the movie might force it, even being a different time line. But, it will probably be some time in 2005, the above was all wishful thinking. ;)

I'd heard word that production had already started on the dub, as clips from it supposedly turn up on the OSTs (might just be rumor though.) Besides, Mike Lazzo mentioned at comic-con that'd there'd be some kind of surprise in Spring 2004. GitS:SAC might just be that surprise.
But, you're right. It could be delayed until early to mid 2005, much to the chagrin of many fans. The content in the series should all be ok, since CN's legal division was able to help WS clear the most recent set of InuYasha episodes through S&P uncut.
