View Full Version : SVES Talkback - .hack//SIGN - Complete Second Run (Spoilers)

With .hack//SIGN on its second run, and with discussion slowing significantly, I've decided to merge the weekly talkbacks together into larger chunks. (Thanks to Conekiller for the suggestion! :D)

It'll be strange to see Silver Knight as a boring character fighting Tsukasa, Mimiru as annoying, and Bear as a strange guy talking about newbies again.
There will be talkbacks for the second run?

There have been talkbacks for the SVES airings of DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho. And .hack has only aired once, as opposed to 36 and 4 respectively.

Sweet nectar. I've been wondering when this show was going to start over due to the fact that it had been on for about four weeks before I even knew about it. Now I guess I have my answer.

Wow, back to episode 1 and I'm still confused. I'd have thought that Tsukasa had just been dragged into the world, but he had been seen with Maha prior to then. So was he data drained and lost his memory as a result(which didn't happen later in the series)?
Also, the significance of that field at the beginning and end. Tsukasa woke up there.(But from what?) And that's also where the Tablet and Guardian first appeared. Also, I hadn't noticed before, but Tsukasa actually did call Maha by his name in this episode. So he has some memories but not others. And the way he talked made it seem like he might have been knocked out after trying to open that chest before, but why the difference now? Or was it just a lapse in his memory so he didn't remember what happened? The possibilites, man the possibilites.
But the biggest question of all? What was up with that stupid bug?

Maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me, but I could swear for a brief moment when Tsukasa tries to log out we see his true self (see last episode).
BTW are we allowed to mention things in future episodes since they've already aired or not?

Yay! Time to find all those little clues and realize how stupid we were the first time around!
BTW, are we going to see any of the other .hack// stuff in the future?
I can't imagine this getting much ratings, nor CN if they moved it 3:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. four weeks in the 1st showing.
Sure, AS does great, and it's all good programming, be it homebrew WS shows, anime, and obviously FG and Futurama, BUT it's also becuase its one of the few and good places of adult cartoons where adults can get their fix, the few adults who watch anime, and the teenage and under fanboys and especially all the fangirls watching the anime, ( warnings now say 14 and up and Funi commented on how YuYuHakusho did great with girls when it was on AS Action ). THAT, and or course the majority will go after the reruns of FG and Furutrama.
Last I checked, CartoonCartoon Fridays does good and I think SVES does good as well, and definitely when there's pumped-up premiers, although I could be wrong, SO late night might work here.
THEN AGAIN, the show may not have enough action to keep attenion in the mainstream. I could be wrong, since I have little siblings OBSESSED with the show. Thier first questions out of their mouths in the day will be if I can tape it for them in case they fall asleep :moon:
Of course it may not be ratings but they may not want to buy a 12 ep. sequel series and the 2 extra eps made for SIGN :(
It's good to finally see the entire series (there was several episodes that I missed).
BTW, here's links to the previous talkbacks (just in case anyone's interested).

.hack is as good n rerun as first time viewing. It'll be interestign see it after knowing whats going to happen. I didn't see the tablet last time. :/
Wow. good episode and it starts interesting from the start. I watched most of the last run from like episode 10 and had seen some of the earlier eps but this was the first time I saw the first episode.
lol. Bear talking about how he helps newbies and Tsukasa being all rude to Mimiru and the Silver Knight. good stuff. :D
.hack//sign definitely has replay value, I just can't seem to get enough of it.. and no matter how many times I see the intro I just can't seem to not love it.. :D :anime:

I think they should've had Bear appear more than once in this episode. We see Mimiru and Silver Knight a few times each, but we only see Bear and BT once. Also, I've discovered that .Hack//Sign is kinda like Cowboy Bebop, in the aspect that you need to keep your eyes glued to the screen to understand what's going on. .Hack kinda goes slow, yet it goes fast. Weird.

Thanks for those links; I have wondered when .hack//SIGN first aired! :)
The one thing I have immediately noticed in this first episode after seeing the entire season was the image of that rectangular TV-screen (?) in the beginning of the episode ... that also appeared at the very end of the series, ... although I do not believe an explanation was given regarding the significance of that screen.
.hack//SIGN is still a great series to re-watch! :anime:
Good episode. I think that was the first appearance of Sora. I don't remember seeing Sora in the first episode.
So Tsukasa fed a grunty. lol. I thought that was just in the game.
I definitely missed some detailed stuff during the last run of episodes, I'm glad I can watch the eps I never saw now. :D
So Silver Knight suffered amnesia, hm.. interesting.
Good to see Bear and Mimiru together already. Also seeing BT. Good stuff. :p
Huge replay value.
BTW: What were the .hack books that were talked about in the previous run's talkback thread? I can't find the answer and I was gonna look into getting them.

I really wish they'd give this show a weekday showing. It could be at 5am for all I care. It just should have a weekday slot so it wont take another how many month until the series makes it through it's second run. Same goes for Kenshin of course.

I'm really loving watching this show a second time around. Does that door have any significance at all. After rewatching the first couple of episodes, I now feel stupid not realizing that was Tsukasa at the very begining. I didn't even notice the person was wearing a dress before. What is really odd is listening to Morgana now. She seems so sweet and innoncent, so now its just plain creepy.

I know the one you mean, I just can't describe it. I like it too.
Well, I just finished watching last night's episode, another one I missed on the previous run and it was good. Not the best, a little too much of "what should we do?" talking going on.
*It was interesting to see Sora in with the actual group, I didn't see that coming.
*Sora asking for Bear's member address was so funny.
*Mimiru getting licked by the creature thing was funny. (I forgot the name, I should play the games again.)
*That was interesting seeing that it was the Cat player who stopped the guardian from attacking, I didn't expect that either.
Gotta give this episode a B-. Although I've seen where the story ends, it's great to be able to be surprised by things in these first episodes. Hopefully the next one is better. :p

I remember when I thought Morgana used to be all sweet and innocnet. Now I just feel like a fool watching this show. There's something she mumbles in this episode that I keep missing. Something to the effect of her keeping Tsukasa safe in this place I think. I love seeing all the Grunties again though, there just so blasted cute! I remember when I used to think they were odd.

Ah, repeats....Brings me back to a time when Toonami used to be on Saturdays *shudder*... All right, Episode 2. We learn practicaly nothing and Mimiru ALMOST gets data drained. Oh and we just can't forget... (cue annoying Brianne Siddall impersonation) "I just wan't to be left alone." B+
P.S. to Guy who was complaining about the bug in episode 1: It's an ongoing in-joke on behalf of project .hack, the same bug also appears in Episodes 5 and 18.
Tonight's episode was ok. For some reason I didn't really get into it much tonight, guess the fact this is my 2nd time watching it might be taking effect.
*Bear suggesting Tsukasa's a girl, which Tsukasa denies. The girl that Bear saw was in a coma, etc.
*Tsukasa calls the woman talking to him in the world , mom.
Overall a C. Those were the only 2 things I really got from this episode, maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, oh well. I'll probably watch it again tomorrow and add any comments that I might've missed. This was what... episode 5?

Other than the the converstaions about Tsukasa's rl persona, and the delevopign aramda against him, are the two main points for this ep.

Knowing Sora's real life character from watching the first run of this series, I have noticed alot of behavioral clues from Sora that I did not catch before in the "Wanted" episode. :anime: Now I see why Sora has this really playful and carefree personality.

Second time around for me and .hack still doesn't disappoint.

*Poor Tsukasa, getting tricked and captured. :(

I know that I asked this back on the 1st page, but that was literally weeks ago, although I can't complain since I haven't really contributed much to this thread since then either. I'll promise to help this tread keep afloat by posting more :D
My question is this: Is CN considering getting anything else?
Obviously CN moved this to late night for a resaon, which actually I've yet to hear, but I'm assuming that it means CN figured that it wasn't action packed enough, since I doubt its the same reason why they've moved Kenshin to a later time, LET ALONE Sat, and its not like the show is blatant on much of the material and they've showed simliar things on other shows that may seem controversial to some.
Even if it did good in the ratings, which I don't recall ever being shown and my own stupidity for not knowing which site to go to to find ratings :p , I doubt they would spend money on a sequel series that only has 13 episodes and let alone any of the extra ep.'s made for SIGN, with Pilot Canidate, orinigally going to Toonami being an exception, as well as general Adult Swim.
Sorry if I started to ramble there
Another episode I've never seen before.
It was nice seeing basically a Mimiru based episode since the whole show is practically based on Tsukasa.
I liked the way it ended and I think they put this episode in the right place, just a few eps after the whole Tsukasa capture thing which was a downer for me during that time. I give this one an A.

I just have to giggle everytime I see A20. Her character design is so distinct and whimsical! Yes, I do agree that it is an appropriate time to diverge from Tsukasa's dilemma in order to see something abit more lighthearted as Mimiru sorts out her feelings and goals regarding Tsukasa's situation.

( Unfotunately, I'm smart enough to doubt it, and any of the extra HACK episodes would be a miracle, unless they thought it would be a good way to give fans some more airtime for the old characters then move on to the new ones )
Major Mimiru action today folks (or yesterday, or whatever folks).
Yeah, A20 is cool looking. Everyone else looks semi-realistic ( aside from their oufits and the occasional angel wings ) except A20, who looks like your normal anime character with Brock-type eyes ( but fotunately not his perverted nature :p )

It always bugs me when they say out "player character" too, rather than just "PC". I'm pretty sure we're getting direct translations of Japanese gaming slang, the translator could have really used the assistance of an English-speaking gamer.

Don't see too many cases of a translation adding words with more syllables than the original japanese, do you... but yea, it was originally just spoken as "PC". Maybe the people translating thought english speaking audiences would confuse is it with "personal computer" or something...

Maybe. In Japan, they call PCs (personal computers) "persocons" (yes, similar to Chobits), so no confusion there. Over here, however, as you said.
Just "player" would have been even more acceptable than "PC", actually, MMOG gamers rarely make the distinction between player and character. If you were specificlly talking about a player character rather than a person, you'd use "avatar" or the more colloquial "toon" (that's a relatively new usage though, and may not have the staying power to make it to The World).
I can understand why they don't use things like "mob", even if it is jargon as old as Bear, but most of the above are at least as clear and a lot less awkward than "player character".

Well, tonight we see for the first time Tsukasa's murderous bastard father. Good times, good times.
WELL, only for the rest of the episode before the end, where we see for a second time Tsukasa learning what it means to be part of a group, that he/she him/herself is also selfish and overcome it, and learning to face your fears instead of cowering behind a shield of sorts.
But Tsukasa's father  That bastard. If only there was a shaking angry face to express my rage at this oh-so-realistic monster. He's EXACTLY Terry Schiavo's husband, except she's actually conscious and can recognize people and her husband got a butt-load of money from a court case becuase of her condition
Sorry, POWERFULL episode, didn't mean to get all serious. Um, Mimiru was HOT as EVAR in this episode? Heh heh?

I'm still annoyed that the dub of "Party" killed the ecchi / etching joke, bah.
You mean when Tsukasa is writing "egg" on the ground?

Why did Tsukasa's dad do that?

I like Mimiru too. :D

Re: Ecchi / Etching

Nope, they translated the Egg riddle just fine. The ecchi / etching thing was when Mimiru was talking about her father. They replaced "ecchi" with "technique" . . . which I suppose could be taken in a similar way, but it's a stretch, doesn't make much sense, and isn't anywhere near as humorous.

I remember that now. But how else would you have done to keep the pun?

The rest of that scene continues in the nest episode Anime Guy. He doesn't come out and say it, but from (I don't know if you've seen the next one, so here) what he says about Tsukasa being a waste on resources  , also later on he tries to unplug Tsukasa when he is not granted permission, and all the stuff we learn from him abusing Tsukasa throughout the series its more or less obvious that he doesn't care for his own kid and that this is a way to get of him/her compared to kicking him/her out and getting in trouble with the authorities
Too bad about the ecchi/etching joke, but I got the punchline of it when I first saw it, and that was before I came online and found out about the orinigal joke, so I think they did a pretty good job.
I haven't posted in this thread for awhile..I haven't watched .hack//sign the last few weeks, i just haven't been able to get into it like I once did and I've been busy. Anyway, just wanted to add about an episode a few weeks back that I had commented on but forgot about one thing. I thought the A20 character was great. Very cute and added a lot to that episode where Mimiru was the focus.. Too bad I don't think we see that character again.

For me, this was the episode that truly stand out in my head. The beginning with Aura stabbing Tsukasa! I don't usually get freaked out by cartoons that much, but that did it for me! That, and we were still at a point when we didn't know if she was evil or not. Actually, I'm still not sure on anything. Oh, and Tsukasa's father...well I'm still ranting on the miserable little montser!

One additional thing to add here: the Aura that appears in the dream sequence has some facial features that somewhat resemble Subaru's. This suggests that that the dream itself shows Tsukasa's uncertainties about both Aura (since he doesn't know anything about her) and Subaru (with those uncertainies probably being due to Silver Knight's attempt to prevent him from seeing Subaru in the episode before).

My dad shouted "Who here does the best ecchi?". etc. etc. I was so embarrased that my face was burning red!
Bear understood that she misheard the word "etching", which is why he knew right away that her dad's workplace was a semiconductor manufacturer.
And yes, the dub kills the joke, and no, there's no other way they could have done it without leaving in the Japanese word "ecchi". And while some dubs leave in some Japanese bits (I've been watching El Hazard on International Channel and they do -chan and sensei and stuff), they aimed .hack more at the mainstream.
The other thing about that episode is that the third riddle sequence makes no sense unless you look up "The Apartment" and "Roman Holiday" at imdb.com.

Thanks, that is funny. So her dad said, "Who here does the best etching?" And she thought he said ecchi instead of etching? I just want to make sure I understand the joke.

Oops. A20 is in game two, hehe, sorry. She has one line and is only there to remind you Mimiru is there (who also has one line)
A20 is supposedly a part of the memory quest in game 3 though, *shrug* I can't figure out how to get it to start. =((

Look around the Delta server, you find something in the area where you met Mia and Elk (it's a bit hard to see)
Next week's episode is the one where one song plays through 80% of the episode, right?

It only works though if you saw all the flashback sequences in MUTATION (the second game). To see those, you just have to go back to the church area (Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground, I think, in the MAc Anu server) several times. It will show you a scene from the anime and give you two items. One will be a power up item and the other will be a key item. You can get a quote from one of the SIGN characters from it.
If you got all the items, the little sidequest in .hack//OUTBREAK will be there.

I don't think I missed anything, but I can't recall if I got those items are not, MUTATION was so long ago and keeping each game straight is a hard thing to do. But, if I messed up in MUTATION, I can't do it in OUTBREAK?

Well, you'll have them under "key items", so look to see if you have them (they were optional, and easy to miss). If you don't have them, pop in Mutation, go to "Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground" 4 times, them pop in Outbreak, and start over (I had to do this because I missed Moonstone).
Trust me, you NEED to do this, because you get a HUGE reward at the end of the 4th game.
On another note:
Next week is the repetitive music episode (the one with all of Subaru's flashbacks)

The 4th volume of the PS 2 game - Quarantine - is now out. I haven't started playing it yet, instead, I've been stepping through the easter eggs on the Liminality disk. The easter eggs explain a lot about Morganna's purpose in The World, and well as what Harald had intended to do when he created Fragment. It's a lot of text, and I don't have the time to type it all up right now.
One of the other things on the Liminality disk is .Hack//Gift. Gift is hilarious, and I've only seen the opening credits piece.
A long time ago, someone had asked about the meaning of the .Hack//Sign opening credits animation. In Gift, it becomes clear that the dancing woman in the red suit is actually the player character for Helba.
So that's one answer. Helba is a dancer. :anime:
But here's the BIG spoiler - the end of the PS2 .Hack games. About who Morganna really is, how is Aura, and why Harald did the World:

Well, I finally finished off the last Phase in Quarantine. Morganna and Aura both get reset, and reborn. Meaning that things are settling down in The World. Harald's entire idea was to create the ultimate AI - Aura, with Morganna's orginal job being to collect information from observations of all of the players in the game to fuel Aura. Aura has been "born" now, but so far there's no real evidence of that. It's fun being able to add Helba, Tsukasa, Subaru and Orca to my party. Especially Helba - her status are all maxed out. ;-) It's even possible to re-add Mia to the party, even after she's been killed off, but I haven't gotten that far. All that remains now to the story is for Tokyo Pop to release the 3rd volume of the Bracelet manga in 5 months. ;-(
Hope that closed some ends for some of y'all, unlike Big O's ending. :D

GIFT is hysterical. Especially Crim and Sora's "rematch" with wire-fu.
I unfortunately stumbled onto the LIMINALITY easter eggs (on the last selection of the "data" menu, push "right" and an Altimit symbol will appear, click it for oodles of info on Phases, Morganna, Harold, Data Draining, Aromatic Grass, Fragment, Epitcaph of the Twilight ect. ) and accidentally read some stuff I would rather not know mid-way thru Mutation (Wiseman rules! Marlo, Rachel and Nuke...don't)

It was an accurate satire; Genkin is an obsessed idiot, Crim is corny as cornflakes, Subaru is useless, Bear and Orca... ... ...look alike.
I'm just saying I think Bandai has the smarts not to release something were it to alter any factual ideas of the show.
