In an exclusive interview with Coming Attractions at Cinescape, FAMILY GUY creator Seth McFarlane told us that the rumor about the possible return of his TV show is about to become a reality. A deal is imminent for McFarlane to continue creating new animated adventures of Quahog's nuttiest, funniest dysfunctional family, the Griffins.
"It's all come down to the budget right now. We're hashing it out," McFarlane tells CA. "It would be a direct-to-DVD project."
While the feature length FAMILY GUY will be developed at Fox, it will be at a different division and not through the company's television arm. And as for when we might be able to see new FAMILY GUY goodness:
"Timeframe, you're probably looking at a year, a year-and-a-half down the line. It will take a while to make. If we could do it within a year it would be very exciting."
With tremendous sales of the first DVD volume of FAMILY GUY (the second set goes on sale starting next week) and ratings on Cartoon Network climbing high, McFarlane's now-cancelled series is proving to be more popular in its afterlife than it was when it was in active production on Fox. Expect all the TV series cast members to reprise their roles for the movie.

Let's hope this sells well, so we can get Season 4 made for CN next fall. :D Hope the movie is good.

So Stewie will finally resurrect his quest for world domination. And he will have an entire feature to work within. Haha! Fools, prepare for your doom!
Hoorah!!! Yippee!! :smileys and such:
I am filled with joy. This calls for a new signature.
I am probably going to wake up in another minute so let me say one more thing: This dream better come true.
Lois will get hers.

Hmm... it seems like maybe it's just me, but I'm skeptical about whether Family Guy's particular brand of humor can sustain itself over a feature-length movie. I'd be more excited if they'd announced a fourth season.
Here's hoping I'm wrong, though, because if the FG movie IS good and DOES do well, I doubt a fourth season could be far behind....

So the question at hand is, will this movie air on Adult Swim? I'm guessing CN will want to obtain the broadcast rights to it.
GPietrash
09-05-2003, 02:57 PM
Probably not. Fox makes it, Fox will want to air it if it does well. Why would they give such a ratings grabber to CN?
If the series is brought back to life, CN is a maybe, but not the movie.

I feel the same, but at this point I don't really care if the movie is good or not. I just want new Family Guy.
Kick arse! Sure hope the movie will be good and that we'll get new episodes on Cartoon Network! :D

I might be missing something, but if the movie is made through Fox and is successful, wouldn't THEY want to show new episodes if created? I mean, they pretty much have to see the obvious ratings implications. Seth says that it'll be a direct-to-DVD project, but would Fox do that, considering that it could instead air the shows that are bringing in big numbers? This seems like a way to get Family Guy back on Fox, but again, I probably missed something.

this is awsome news! I'm not sure if it bodes well for new ep's for AS, and I'm not sure if FG can sustain it's manic style over an entire movie....BUT IT'S NEW FAMILY GUY! and for that, I shouldn't complain at all.

Wait....there's going to be a Family Guy movie? A THEATRICAL MOVIE??? A THEATRICAL MOVIE IN THEATRICAL MOVIE THEATRE??????
HOLY CRAP
Yay!! I was so psyched to read this article. I started watching Family Guy when it came to CN. :p I can't wait for this movie to come out. Hopefully new episodes will follow after, and if so it could be on PBS for all I care and I would still watch it.. :D

If anyone is skeptical about the FG Movie's legnth not being able to sustain the humor, it will only be around 81-85 minutes most likely. We're not talking LOTR length here!
Oh, and title ideas. Too bad we can't have "FAMILY GUY: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT"...since that's been done. Though that brings up another question.....

Like...since this is Direct-to-DVD, theoretically, they'd have no restrictions...meaning they could get away with anything.....
I wonder if we'll be seeing a R rating... at the least probably PG-13.

Good news, but I too worry about the movie sustaining itself for that long a period of time. Oh well, I should be happy that we're getting one, shouldn't I :p

Because knowing FOX, they'd put it on at 7PM Sunday nights, the NFL would preempt it for 5 straight months and they'd look at the horrific airings because it never airs and can it. FOX doesn't care about their shows one bit. I'm praying they never attempt to air it again although part of me knows that they'll screw it up somehow anyway, just like they screwed up Futurama, Simpsons, X-Files, and so on...

*TROLL ALERT*Aw c'mon, they only posted once . I hate Family Guy a lot, but I'm excited for this news because when animation pushes the limit, good things can follow. This will be a positive for animation as a whole, and I'm into that even if not FG.

So THAT is why Fox put up the Stewie for Govenor site and put Stewie on MTV. They're trying to keep the hype alive for the upcoming project. Could the movie have to do with Stewie running for Govenor? Is it just a temporary stunt?

Hmm. This thread used to be about the Family Guy movie. That's what the title imples.
I think someone should try to get Stewie on the ballot in California. Doesn't it just require some signatures on a petition or something?
I remember a story years ago about a guy that got his dog elected mayor of a town in California.
Go Stewie!

Technically in FOX terms it would be Family Guy Season 5 seeing as though season 3 was split into two parts.
Season 3 Summer run for the 2000-2001 Summer run until Baseball playoffs
"Season 4" from Baseball playoffs until finish for 2001 -2002 season (except 1 episode)

I hope that they show some restraint. Even if it is direct to video, I wouldn't want them to go 'buck wild', that usually ends up being more of a repugnant spectacle than a good comedy (example: Freddy Got Fingered).

I forsee a lot of time being eaten up with songs, duets, solos and other such things. I've never found musicals to be entertaining, even when they're supposed to be comical.

Did anyone pick up the Family Volume 2 DVD ? If not, our missing out. And you might as well get it now and save a whole lot of money, rather than figure out how bad you really want it later and have to spend the extra cash. The DVD's already number one in sales on Amazon.Com! That just shows how popular the show is, considering how longs its been cancelled! You should get the dvd because its the only thing that will keep us busy until the straight to dvd Family Movie comes!

I remember a couple months ago reading an announcement that Fox had learned from their mistakes and was releasing the second set with both the episodes and the commentary completely uncensored. I haven't heard from anybody who actually bought the set, though, but I have no reason to doubt it since the announcement cited a press release straight from Fox.

I was going to say the exact same thing, heh, but you beat me to the punch. I hated the musical aspects of South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (except "Shut Your ******* Face Uncle-******). I see the same damn thing happening in the FG movie.
I dunno...the MC Hammer parody was great.

I don't honeslty get why some people are aganist musicals. I love them to death. Maybe because I just like show tunes a lot. But, I really enjoy the movie musical. It makes the movie seem much more grand and important to me...
Sorry if this is considered flammable, but IMHO Seth McF is such a hack. I'll watch the movie, but am expecting the lowest common denominator, and will probably be amazed at just how stupid he can make it.

Why on Earth would you watch the movie if you already know that you dislike McFarlane's work? I mean, I think that "The Wild Thornberries" is one of the worst things Nickelodeon has put out in many years, and you don't see me standing in line for THEIR movie. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion-- it would be a boring world if everyone could agree on what was good-- but why would you purposefully subject yourself to something you know you won't enjoy?

I'd watch it because, as a writer, I appreciate good writing. Family Guy was ALWAYS well written. The problem, as I saw it, was Seth's vision of the show was, in my mind, SO far behind the evolution of prime time animation that The Simpsons brought us, that is was DOOMED to fail.
Futurama, similarly, was doomed to fail (although it still won't die, thank God!) because it is a HUGE leap ahead of the curve, and confuses the hell out of most people.
On the other hand, shows like Mission Hill, Home Movies, The Oblongs, and others that have found a home on AS were, IMHO, right there with The Simpsons, but were just never given a chance to shine.
It's just my opinion that The Family Guy won an Emmy BECAUSE it was so unevolved, uncomplicated, and generally "cartoony". It could have been SO much better, considering the quality of writing, and I blame Seth for that.
