Wow. I remember when they first started using the digital animation of PPG. Except for some brightness, it seemed basically the same. Now though, eesh. Numerous badly done animation cheats.

The monster-one was OK, nothing special.

I liked all the quips the Talking Dog said, especially the one at the end about the narrator being tired after 5 seasons and a movie. :anime: :p :D

I thought they already knew the Talking Dog?

Hehehe... "So once again the day is saved? That's it? That's the best you can do? No funny little quips we've all come to know and love? But I mean, I guess I can understand that. After 5 seasons and a movie I guess you might just want to give up and throw in the towel. What? WHAT?! What did I say?! WHAT???"

Just caught the tail end of it. Talking Dog's quip at the end was very funny.

Also, Steve Blum was in the credits, as well.

I'll have my thoughts on the episode tomorrow.

Humans Meet Monsters and The Girls Meet The Talking Dog in The Powerpuff Girl Episode Review of "Monstra City"/"Shut The Pup Up".

Monstra City- Nothing really that special. I liked the Mayor selling Monster Island so he could make his own toy line and the Eye Guy Monster being harrassed by the guy from work, but the rest was pretty meh. I give this segment a B-.

Shut The Pup Up- Again, not really that good a short but not a terrible one. Well at least we get more on the Talking Dog character (after quick apperances in such episodes as "Bubblevicious" and "Film Flam") and it's not actually that off from other episodes. Yeah, he's annoying, but that's the point. This episode seemed to drag though at points. My favorite part was the end where the criminals turned out to just be throwing out bones (but turned out to be real criminals, even though no one knows except them and the audiance. I wonder if we'll see them again) and then the dog insulting the narrator at before the credits ("I guess after 5 seasons and a movie you're tired"). I give this a B.

Overall: B-

The only time I really laughed during the first short was Buttercup's "SHUT UP!"'s

The dog one was the better of the two. This first one felt the same as any "two groups learn tolerence by agreeing to disagree" things I've seen before in cartoons. But atleast they had the respect to let the audience figure it out at the end and have it so the monsters moved back home. Am I the only one who thought the monster lawer bared a very vague reseblance to Gary the rat.

As for the talking dog, glad he got a highlight episode, now never give him another one again. His comments were cute, but I was expecting Buttercup to kick him out once the "crime" was solved.

"Shut up!" ~ Buttercup

And the quote everyone has from the end:

"After 5 seasons and the movie I guess you must be tired."

I did like "Shut the Pup Up," even though they already knew the Talkign Dog. The Talking Dog had a lot of funny comments during the episode.

I liked both episodes, but I liked the first episode a little more. I really liked the sequence with the monster with one eye and the scene with the mosquito monster ("You're being slowly digested ...") and just seeing the mosters and citizens of Townsville interact was very entertaining. Nice premise overall. Overall grade: B

In the second episode, the talking dog did get annoying and I was letdown with the bag of bones in the finale. It was still fun to watch the girls react to him though, and I got a kick out of Professor Utonium's
"Pug Life" tattoo. Overall grade: B-

While I wasn't very impressed with the storylines, both these eps included some good jokes. Particularly the 'Pup' one- the return of the Jack Fridayesque officer from 'School House Rocked', Prof's ever-growing proliferation of temporary tattoos, and Talking Dog's tact-challenged commentary ("Buttercup's hairdo... really ugly!" "Did you know pinkeye is actually a disease?")

Overall, I rate it slightly-above-average.

Monstra-City:
Meh. It was okay! I liked the backgrounds.. especially at Monster Island. It was wonderfully done. (Yeah, I notice things like this..) The backgrounds, that is. The story was a little.. blah. The eye monster segments were great.
B-

Shut the Pup Up:
This reminds me of that "Bubbleviscious" episode where the talking dog starts a traffic jam for some reason. I liked Bubbles "I'm not a chubby cry baby" but the way her head moved back and forth just looked too weird! It was pretty good nonetheless.

There were no highlights of "Monstro-City." It gets 1.5

Highlights of "Shut the Pup Up" included Talking Dog's comments about Ms. Bellum, and of course the end.

Out of 5 stars, I give it 3.5.

Also, I noticed that Craig McCracken wasn't credited as director for both shorts. I think that's a first.

Perhaps he has another project coming up.

I liked the first ep. and loved the second. "Shut the Pup Up" is one of the funniest and smartest PPG eps I've seen.

5 out of 5.

The Power puffs just aren't funny anymore... The First Segment was wierd to begin with, They were Fighting a Giant Chicken, right? Nothing odd here, So Then he points out that a LOT of other monsters were coming to move into townsville Who were the same size. Once the monsters moved into town, they were ALL more or less the same size as the townies, then one said "You allways get stuck in between our big pointytoes" The rest of the segment went on with the monsters shrunk down to pocket size. ButterCup's "SHUT UP" line really applied to the other episode, ^_~. When the monsters moved back to monster Island, they returned to they're normal size.

The Puppy episode was better, It just got stupid later on... Yeah, the dog was bugging the girls, but it just got repeditive, I could totally tell Flash was used to do Bubble's "I'm not a Chubby Crybaby" thing, her head moved to fluidly... But there was one funny quip

Prof."Well, dog's can't talk..."
FBI"Actually, this one can... it's the Talking dog"

Both of these episodes seemed pretty so-so...

"Monstro-city":
Liked the bits with the monsters trying to work/eat while in Townsville.

"Shut the Pup Up":
Another episode with a vaguely-off-color word-play title ("Mo Job", etc.).

Liked the Talking Dog's various cracks ("you can support three girls doing that?" "I guess after five seasons and a movie you're just phoning it in", etc.), as well as what the Professor did with the tattoos...

And yes, I once again have cable access again...that and my current situation not affording me to do much besides watch TV is allowing me to get caught up on my cable-TV-show viewing...

I know it was Tom Kenny and all, but that dog seriously reminded me alot of Norm MacDonald, at least in the intonations of his backhanded comments. I was cracking up about the bistro owners and their "legitimate business" and how they were disposing of their "ribs". I can't believe they let that slide through. :D

Tom Kane was the voice of Talking Dog.

PPG is not, and never will be, made in Flash. Just because you see tweens doesn't mean a show = Flash. It's just a benefit of digital animation, and digital tweening has been used in the movie itself. It's not a matter of saving money on animation, it's a stylistic preference (Craig likes that Gorillaz/Parappa style of flat 2D objects moving 3D-like while remaining limited in the amount of drawings).

By the way, the best gag was in Monstra City, with the eye monster next to the guy in the urinal. And the "Tasty Q's" cereal... laff. What an absurd cereal name.

The first segment, Monstro City, was much better than the second segment but I felt that the idea behind the Monstro wasn't taken far enough. Mayor has done the most Mayor-like thing I could think of in the episode I've seen when he used the deed for Monster Island to build his toy store. What could have been a comment on gentrification and its effects fizzled towards the end. Having the displaced monsters moving to Townsville was the only aspect of the joke that was explored. They should have had some Townsville residents move to Monster Island and change it into something its not and have the conflict arises between the changing way of life in Townsville and Monster Island as the result of the Mayor's development of Monster Island. Alas, the potential for social satire wasn't fully realized in this episode and that's a shame.

Finally new PPG.
Well the first half was alright, 3/5 but I really liked the second half 5/5. I think talking dog is really funny, but that's because of one of his first quotes: "Well, I may be able to talk, but I sure as heck can't drive."
Overall 4/5.
