View Full Version : Adult Swim - 11 PM to 5 AM (ET)

Killtacular

Beginning October 5th, Adult Swim is expanding to 6 hours a night, from 11 p.m. - 5 a.m. (ET).

As an icebreaker, the second half of Adult Swim will simply be an encore of the first, likely to change into something fuller by November.

Now noone can complain about missing something. It's Sunday/Thursday all over again! VCR recording enthusiasts celebrate.

We do not yet know if this transition affects the entire week or Sundays only. It's about 50% likely to be either... the fact being that Futurama and Family Guy repeats would probably inspire people to sit through the anime.. but CN may have only given this opportunity to AS for the November Sunday premieres, which will be plentiful.

I knew it would happen sooner or later, but this soon? WOW! All I can say is "OMGWTF!!1" This will be great. Sure, repeats aren't the worlds best invention(but I'll probably watch them anyway on days off), but seeing repeats of Futurama, Family Guy, and Inuyasha will be cool. Plus we'll get different material their eventually. We could put WS and older anime on 5 days a week.

About 50% that it will affect the entire week OR Sunday only?

Well considering the two options I give it a 43% chance. Give or take 2 points.

Upon reading this, I wonder if by any chance there could be "stealth" pilots that air at 5:00 AM on certain days.

This is great, I was wondering when they were going to expand. I just hope they decide to do it on weekdays too.

That's excellent news. I'm eager to see what they do with this extra time in the future. They've already got quite a few anime properties that can't staay in the rotation, so letting those run ad naseum into the wee hours of the morning would be a good idea.

I'm still waiting for them to bump it up to 10 pm though, adding an extra hour of comedy to weeknights.

Well, this is somewhat of a surprise, but all in all a good move. Even though the second 3-hour block is a repeat of the first, it opens up the possibility for future scheduling freedom...which is a good thing.

The only thing that keeps this from being super-awesome news is that the second half will be repeats. But if it's Sundays only then it isn't a problem.

Definately a good thing, though I hope WS doesn't try to make Adult Swim 11-5 all original before they are ready. For now, the encore presentation is about all they can do.

Otherwise, yeah. Its great to know that you have a second chance now to catch every show if you miss it.

Unless the person in question wants to have a permanent archive. I don't see the need for one (since I buy DVD sets of anything I want to 'keep forever') but some people feel some sort of joy in being surrounded by sets of personal recordings.

All in all, TiVo is the way to go for people that just have to see Adult Swim but can't be home or awake for it. :)

i know i do. i have Tenchi, Big O, Outlaw Star and numerous others back from their first Toonami run. but since i just got a DVD player yesterday, i'll be giving those to a friend in favor of boxed sets.

This second half repeat should be quite useful for now, should another programing channel conflict with Adult Swim programing. Such as those who follow TechTV and International Channel's animation programing.

Just to give you an idea of how bad this is with me taping it, aside from the Thursday repeats and missing apporxamatly 4 - 4 1/2 hours of material, I've got EVERY night of AS on tape from the start. It''s in EP mode of course (I'm insane, not crazy), but, ugh, it's like every two months I buy 10 packs of tapes right now. And yeh, I coudl get the DVDs, but I'm jsut REALLY bad at stopping/starting tapes, and I hate missing things that I know won't be on DVD ever (commercials, interstials, bumpers, tv edit versions of series, etc.), so, I don't know, I think I'm just gonna finally get off my ass and invest in a video capture card or something. Of course, that doesn't rule out getting the DVDs of the shows I really like anyway...

What can I say, I'm like King Lord Pack Rat   :p

O_O I'm just like that with AS. I taped Trigun's AS edit just to have both versions, I don't even know WHY I did it, I just did. Well, once it moved to weekdays I only taped things I didn't already have. At first it caused some problems (forgetting to change the timer and missing something, usually something rare like a SGC2C episode), but now I have a second vcr set up to tape the entire night to a temporary tape, which I switch every few months when the quality starts to diminish. How many tapes do you have? I'm on number 46. o_O,`

Taking an approxamate count just now, and including the blanks I have left...

A little under 150 tapes.

If I ever copy this stuff to digital, I could probably sell the lot of them off on eBay as "The most complete Adult Swim Archive outside Cartoon Network". Or something like that.

So I guess that just shows why I'm getting kind of worked up over it extending the time. I mena, I can understnad them wanting to and all, but for me personally it's just something that's gonna get to me.

"Adult Swim Sunday now 6 hours"

YeeHaw! They keep proving that they are listening to us.
Anyway, it is true, atleast according to Animation Insider:
http://animationinsider.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=3381&hl=
and they have never steered me wrong

After the first 3 hours of Adult Swim, the next 3 hours will be a repeat of the first 3 hours.

In other words:

11PM: Big O
11:30PM: The Brak Show
11:45PM: Aqua Teen Hunger Force
12AM: Sealab 2021
12:15AM: Space Ghost Coast to Coast
12:30AM: Home Movies
1AM: Trigun
1:30AM: Cowboy Bebop
2AM: Big O
2:30AM: The Brak Show
2:45AM: Aqua Teen Hunger Force
3AM: Sealab 2021
3:15AM: Space Ghost Coast to Coast
3:30AM: Home Movies
4AM: Trigun
4:30AM: Cowboy Bebop

This is good news to those who might miss a fav episode the first time around.
Plus, its better than popeye reruns.

Ah, sweet memories.

In any case, this is very good news. This can easily help quell those idiots who want their favorite show on all the time even if it's been replayed to death. That is, of course, if the second half won't be always dedicated to reruns of the first half. I guess we'll just have to see how this plays out.

Then you're syndicator must suck then, since I have three seperate channels that syndicate the show (and they pretty much run at different points in the series, WB49 just started running episodes from season 2, even though I don't live in Canada, I get CBC, which is in the middle of season 13, this run has been continuously been running every season in order since last November/December, and FOX29, which airs episodes from season 12). And this is not mentioning the FOX reruns and soon to be new Season 15, so in my area, I get a hell of a lot of Simpsons.

A Whole 6 Hours of Adult Swim? Sounds like a very intresting idea. Even if it's just repeats for a while. I can deal with that. Old acquistions appearing in that 2-5 spot though should happen at some point though.

Oh BTW, they've been playing old Simpsons episode all week on my local syndication FOX. Episodes like "Lisa's Subsitute" "Itchy and Scratchy The Movie" and "Lady Bouvier's Lover" in case anyone cared.

Matthew Williams
08-28-2003, 11:28 PM
Actually, it;s individual deals with the affiliate. They're given a limited pool of episodes to air, and they air them accordingly. For example, Fox 29 Philadelphia had a limited pool of Simpsons eps and when they expanded to three showings a day, there was much repetition. Since July 1, they've been airing a noticeable number of older stuff. I tended to notice Season 5 on whenever I watched but now it seems like they're going with classics(season 3/4) on the first showing, slightly newer on the next, and the newest stuff is on at 11.

My initial reaction was "Oh great..." since it's sometimes hard for me to find time to watch AS on tape during the week, but since the the last three hours are repeats it's kind of cool. I'm hoping they phase in old shows I haven't seen, like Outlaw Star and Tenchi, not to mention Gundam...I would really like to start following Gundam since it's kind of an anime staple, but I don't want to start in the middle of a series.

Wishful thinking but I still believe that they could reserve some of the time from 1am-4am (central) for unedited material. Though we all know that whatever they plan to air in the newly acquired timeslot won't be for new acquisitions or new epsisodes of anyshow.

And why exactly is that?

--Drizz :marvin:

Because the block is called "Adult Swim"...and its M.O. isnt to rerun Boomerang material. Otherwise why tell the kids to get out the pool? Leave 'em in! Next up after Blue Gender...Tom and Jerry!

(AS card)

Tom is a cat

A cat who doesnt appear to be a very good hunter.

Tough skull though.

Jerry is a mouse

Jerry can dance. And sometimes he can be seen cavorting with hot cat chicks.

Tom and Jerry...now.

Enjoy.

Where would you put the classic material at then?

That's easy...not on AS. Am I the only one that seems to think that this is common sense? Its a contradiction in the programming block...how can they justify airing racy material like FLCL and then follow it up with Bugs, Popeye, T&J, etc?

I mean if the issue at hand is the expansion of AS is taking away airtime for 3, 4, and 5am airings of classic shorts...then I guess I could see how those who stay up to watch that might be annoyed. But seriously...classic shorts on AS...?

Tienshin, think target demographics. Adults are the people who watch Adult Swim; and similarly adults are the people most likely to enjoy classic cartoons.

I don't know, makes sense to me, and I wouldn't be suprised to see something classic show up on AS eventually.

I'm not bashing the classic stuff, thats what I grew up watching with a bowl of cereal while watching the TV that was placed on top of a bigger broken TV.

My point is this, and only this.

If they start putting what most American's seem to view as kiddie toons, on AS then that journalist that was so upset over FLCL would have been able to say:

"My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful half hour of Bugs and Daffy only to be ambushed by a barrage of violence, exposed booty's and some weirdo with huge eyebrow's on Cartoon Network"

Sure Adults watch the classics, I do...but in terms of dropping it in a block clearly meant to grab the 18-35 demo with edgy animation...that makes no sense whatsoever.

I tell ya what...make a poll on the question, I am guessing the results wont favor adding classic shorts to AS.

Anyways, classic arguments and talk go in that thread...let's this thread back on topic, por favor. ^_^

I'm not sure that parents consider "Tom and Jerry" or "Daffy Duck" to be shows that they can plop the kids in front of without worries. It's pretty common knowledge these cartoons were made for adults (people who don't know this either haven't been informed and think this way thanks to Warner Brothers' marketing or they just don't like to believe it). Let's face it, guns and blackface aren't considered adult anymore, I guess, because these days kid's shows have innuendos and violence all the time. The thing is that if classic cartoons were played on Adult Swim with a disclaimer, the cartoons could be shown unedited. Just because the characters aren't cussing or not making innuendo jokes (ones that are more obvious than the ones in kid's shows, of course, because kid's shows already have innuendo hidden in them) does not mean that this stuff doesn't appeal to adults. Call it Boomerang if you can't stomach the idea of something, gasp, old, being on an adult block, but I never liked Boomerang because it usually focuses on cheesy badly-animated Hanna-Barbera shows from the late-sixties and seventies, and when Boomerang does show classic cartoons they are edited or colorized just like any regular airing on Cartoon Network. The bottom line is, there should be at least one hour or so devoted to classic MGM, Warner Brothers, and Popeye cartoons so that they can be seen the way they were meant to be seen. Funny how they can edit out a blackface out of TOM AND JERRY but Cow and Chicken has an episode with a stereotypical black blues singer. Since Cartoon Network, or Warner Brothers, can't seem to treat classics fairly they need a place to be where they are shown properly.

Edit: Sorry, started typing this before The Landstander's post.

"Yeah, whatever floats CN's boat" is fine with me unless they go and do something stupid.Which I think this is a good idea....It's giving the fans all the shows they want and 2 times to see it.Also,It sets a good foundation for the future schedules of Adult Swim.

Blah. I guess it's okay, though I won't be watching it. Untill they have other stuff then a repeat of before.

Wow. Adult Swim really is expanding. I just hope the reruns won't kill the block. I mean, if your block has 25% new stuff and the rest are reruns, and if it's shown every single AS day, it does become an overkill.

I assume this is just AS North America right?

Well how many people are going to be watching at 330am? 4am? Except for our buddies on Pacific time, it's not a big deal about it. I'll have to agree with the general sentiment that it might be a good place to plunk down MSG.

This is teh s weet.

Wow, so you've got the original 'Get Out Of The Pool' Mambo Gallego mix, the old robot voice, Yu Yu Hakusho promos with 'ass' censored, Jin-Roh and Escaflowne ads, and of course the 3,590,250,937,250,982,475 Juicy Fruit ads they aired a long time ago (Come on you old lady! Arrrrrrrg!).....good times.....Heh. Ah, those repetetive Juicy Fruit ads. The bane of our existence for pretty much the entire month of October. I'm almost glad it was only on Saturdays and Sundays back then.

I have a [mostly rhetorical] question that hasn't been asked yet.

What about cards? Specifically the Sunday ones. Do you suppose they'll repeat the cards along with the show, or will there be new cards all night? Because if the latter's the case, they already have me staying up until 5:00.
