I have finally seen most of it (missed the very beginning, but it's playing on STARS--on again right now, as a matter of fact, so I'll try to catch that). I was very impressed with this anime. Certainly not the usual stuff with robot suits and freeze frames. I liked the underlying themes and the treatments of the characters (really, no one was portrayed as completely evil). I liked it very much, and would gladly watch other anime of this calibre.:)

I have never claimed that all anime is crap. I simply am not all that entertained by most anime.

Mononoke was different in that it fit well with the traditional Japanese dress and times portrayed. It had no crossdressing comic relief, no ambiguous gender characters, no freeze frame or repetitive transformation scenes and no over exaggerated expressions. I don't exactly consider anime with these elements
as crap (at least not all of them), but I do find such artistic and cultural affectations distracting and not all that entertaining. I thot Akira's storyline muddled and its characters not all that appealing. I liked practically all of the characters in Mononoke. Of course, Neil Gaimen did the western story translation of Mononoke, which was a great benefit.

If you enjoyed Princess Mononoke I think you should watch Rurouni Kenshin- Meiji Kenkaku Romantan, or just "Samurai X"
The TV series is not that bad either, but lot a lighter and fun to watch.
