Berserk is based on a serial manga by Kentaro Miura that has run for 18 volumes now and was made into a 25-episode anime. It is set in medieval Europe. It doesn't have high scorcery or magic fights, but rather realistic swordplay.
The protagonist Guts began as a black swordman roaming the land, killing demons disguised as human. He wields an incredibly big sword called the Dragon Slayer and he's very good with it. But Guts is no hero... in fact the title Berserk reflects adequately on his state of mind. He doesn't operate on any moral standards and doesn't always try to save the good people; he just wanted to kill the demons for his own vengence. He has a burnt mark on his neck, and it bleeds whenever demons are nearby. The story then take us through his life since birth and his reason for vengence.
The eclipse is perhaps the most talked-about event in the anime series, and among the most disturbing scenes that I've ever witnessed. Griffith, crippled beyond recovery, attempts to kill himself . An eclipse occurs, transporting the entire BAND OF THE HAWK (the group that Gatts is a member of , basically his loved ones) to a world of darkness. Everyone is branded, and brutally slaughtered, as Griffith trades their lives for another chance to achieve his dreams. Gatts and Casca, miraculously, survive. Griffith, reborn as Femto, rapes Casca and forces Gatts to watch. Trying desperately to save her, Gatts loses his left arm and right eye. However, they are both horribly damanged and they will never be the same people I've grown to care about.

This show is violent, however, you never really feel that it's pointless violence. It's very bloody, but you feel that every character is fighting for what they believe in their hearts and/or to find their own paths in life.Gatts was born from a corpse and the man who raised him allowed him to be assualted by a soldier, at age 9, after accepting money from that soldier. The most engaging aspect of the show is that we see Gatts develop from a cold, lonely teenager into a man who grew to love deeply only to have it all ripped away from him by the one man (Griffith) he admired and grew to love and trust totally. The 25 episodes are beautifully paced and the score both enchants and unsettles you. The character development and evolution of relationships will leave you wanting more and a second season is currently in preproduction. :cool
