This is an absolutely shocking story. There's actually a Democrat in Texas?!?
:D
Okay, seriously. Can a name have a skin color? Should we have Affirmative Action for devastating storms? Do we even care? Well, I do. I feel that minorities have been ignored for too long in everyday occurances such as hurricanes. And the minority that has been hit the hardest, is the geek community. I want more geeky names for hurricanes. Hmmmm...Hurricane Lucky Bob. Hurricane *~*~*dArK_l0rD_bAc0|\|*~*~*. Hurricane Urkel. Why not?

Yep, the poor lonely texan democrat.
He's doing well on representing his party, focusing on such a trivial issue as whether hurricane names sound black enough. Why not use oriental or arabic or mexican sounding names? I think Jorge is a great name for a hurricane.

This almost makes me ashamed to be called African american almost. Ya know I for one wouldn't want a storm that destroyed major parts of the state named after me.This is just plain stupid. She could spending her time on something more important such as getting help to the less foutrante rather than coopling about storms being given "black" names. You know as luck would have it the first black named storm would probly be the worst since the 1900 storm then she'd be complaing about that.

On a similar vein, an excerpt from an article in today's IMDB...
Whoopi Goldberg Sparks Up a Storm
The actress' new TV comedy show Whoopi will see the Sister Act star play a chain-smoking innkeeper who puffs away in three of the pilot episode's 22 scenes. The Reverend Jesse Brown, executive director of African Americans For Positive Imagery, fumes, "We don't need to see the tobacco companies' messages reinforced by Whoopi or anyone else on television."
More proof of what I tried to assert in a thread elsewhere... that part of the reason you don't see more black characters on television is that any negative quality the character has, that you could give a white character without question, would be called to task.

That is so true. Its almost as if the characters have to so carefully sanitized that you basically end up with Black/Hispanic actors playing roles that could easily be played by white actors. The George Lopez show comes to mind as well as the Damon Wayan’s comedy on ABC. However part of that is due to show creators trying purposefully to appeal to the mainstream. But of course none of that matters when some idiot pipes up over a ridiculously absurd idea about sending messages about tobacco companies

I don't know. Personally, I see hurricanes as more of a white destructive force of nature. I think forest fires are more of a black thing. And tsunami's are more Asian, Just like earth quakes are Indian by nature.
Like, the Great Chicago Fire should have been named... The great Shantel Fire.
Tornados should have more hickish names, like Clarence.
And everyone knows floods are the Nazis of natural disasters.

It's really weird how nutty people who are black mean that the whole African American group has got problems, and yet nutty people who are white somehow doesn't mean that the entire white population is screwed up.
In the same regard it's really sad that when a black person defames a racial issue or a person, it means most blacks are whiners, but when a white person defames a person or a reverse racial issue, it's just a hissy fit.
Martin Lawrence must have slipped through the cracks re: his own TV show despite his portrayed negative qualities.

Why give hurricanes names at all? Use Roman Numerals, followed by the years, to accurately name a hurricane. For example, Hurricane IV 2005 was the fourth hurricane of 2005. See, it's that simple! :)
Most people, of any race or ethnic group, don't even care what hurricanes are named. Naming storms is like naming all the toilets in your house. No one likes them, you can't get rid of them, so some people become obsessed with giving them names like they were people.

Well..... your only supposed to remember the MEMORABLE ones. Like Andrew. It gives you a feeling that there IS someone you can hate for your house being blown away. Everyones hates Andrew down here...and with good reason, too. But hey!! Atleast noone figures "only a BLACK hurricane could have done this!"

Ahh...but what happens when other minority groups decide that Hurricanes don't represent their culture? Does this mean that we'll have Hurricane *Unpronouncable* when the Hurricane gets named after someone that the english language doesn't have as part of its language? How are people going to be warned of impending danger when the announcers won't even be able to pronounce the thing they are supposed to be concerned about?
Ok - so I'm being a tad sarcastic but I think this is a terrible idea to waste tax payers money on by even bringing this up as an issue. I mean, are there no other issues that need attention? Just how many constituents have contacted her about this issue? And perhaps the larger question - how long until the complaints start coming from Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, Chinese-Americans, German-Americans, etc when a Hurricane with a culturally significant name is seen destroying homes, businesses and lives?
Sometimes I wonder how these people get elected into office......
