View Full Version : So what's FLCL?
I know it stands for Fooly Cooly (I think) but what is it about? Can somebody give me a quick synopsis?

Some stuff happens, and the stuff is really awesomely cool and funny.
Seriously, I'm afraid that you're not going to get a better explanation than that from anyone here, since 1) part of the appeal is going in not knowing what to expect and 2) most people who watch it don't have a clue what went on anyways.

In Kyle Pope's intro to his upcoming FLCL edit lists, he says, "Ask 10 anime fans what FLCL is and you'll get 11 different answers." I think that sums it up pretty well.
Anyway, it's definelty worth watching. I just recently got the last DVD, and last night I sat down and watched all 6 episodes back to back (I had only seen the first three before that). I'm still trying to figure everything out. It's an experience, to be sure...

What ANN said...
FLCL, Furi Kuri, Fooly Cooly... (Oh I give up. My head is starting to hurt.)
WARNING! If your grip on reality is tenuous. If your sanity depends upon the sustained belief in an ordered universe. If you're standing at the precipice of madness dreading the slight breeze that will push you over then by all means stay away from Adult Swim come August 4th, 2003. As is a frequent occurence over at the Gainax Studios the animation staff went off their meds for a while and the result was a six episode masterpiece that swept through anime fandom like nothing before. There is no consensus on how to write the title but my preference is FLCL. And FLCL is coming to Adult Swim. So what is FLCL about? Ask ten different anime fans and you'll get eleven different answers. Suffice it to say that this show is completely off the wall. Long after you've seen all six episodes you will still be scratching your head asking "What the hell hit me?" It's about a boy. It's about a girl. It's about another girl. It's about a robot. It's about even more robots. It's about a very big flat iron. You get the idea. Anyway I can't wait until the newbies catch this one. They'll be an epidemic of staring at the ceiling and drooling in offices and schools across America.
As for edits, I couldn't even predict. The territory this show treads covers so many sensitive issues I'm not sure if CN will try to edit it and tone any of it down or just roll the dice and take their chances. Either way it's going to be a fun ride on a yellow Vespa. Be warned people. Somewhere out there is a Rickenbacker bass guitar with your name on it. You'd better duck.

All I can say is, even if you see it and say "Hated it, too damn weird for me", you will become a fan of J-Rock alternative band The Pillows, whose music provides the soundtrack. They are as intregal to the happenings in FLCL as Yoko Kanno's music was to Bebop.
Think I'm exagerating? OK, but if you can't get the song "Ride On Shooting Star" out of your head after the credits roll, don't say I didn't warn you. ;) :anime:

Speaking of "Ride on Shooting Star", FLCL disc 3 has an actual music video for it. Pretty cool.

What about...eyebrows?
To sum up FLCL, its six episodes of utter insanity. This show's animators were easily on speed, crack, and were listening to way too much rock music. I will admit, there's a story, but to understand it all takes multiple viewings - far more than the meager two that AS is giving us. In short:
FLCL is the epitome of kick-ass and WTF.
By the way, The Pillows are awesome. I can guarantee to you that this show has the greatest soundtrack since Cowboy Bebop.
BTW, since the whole series is only 6 episodes will there only be one talkback for the whole series?

The soundtrack kicks serious ass. I posted this spoiler in the "Anime questions" thread but here goes (slightly modified)...some things you can expect if you haven't seen FLCL. The spoiler is vague, but think a couple times before reading.
Naota’s father’s libido, an awesome paintball game, tons of sexual innuendo, "sour" drinks, Kenny, REALLY HOT CURRY (watch out Granpa!), some serious eyebrows, an "iron" that will ruin your day, a Vespa, and gratuitous guitar abuse.
Oh baby, this show rocks the party that rocks the body...

You also noticed the Kenny in episode 3? That was hilarious the first time I saw it. My personal favorite part of this show is the gunfight in episode 5 with Kamon in a...certain uniform, the John Woo references, and the back-and-forth switching of art styles.

I dont want to touch on this too much but:
Wasn't that ep 5(Kenny I mean)? Right before the gunfight and barbershop scene? The John Woo stuff was classic especially with the bullet exclaiming that it was just a bullet and the pigeons getting rowdy. And my fav part of the whole series....the huge hand. That was some fine shotgun work
Honestly, you can't carry on what would appear to be a sensible conversation about FLCL. Lets hope all tha young-un's are asleep for this AS material

Watch when Canti lands on Miyaji's car in episode 3, destroying it completely. You'll see Kenny fly up in the air amongst all the other debris. I personally don't have a favorite part in this series, although the scene with Naota "swinging the bat" at the end of episode 4 is up there.

Holy crap! You are right, I had to freeze frame it but Kenny is there, right against the school as the debris flies up, I thought you meant the scene in ep 5 where naota pulls his hoodie over his head real tight and talks in mumbled Kenny like fashion

The part in episode 5 is what I thought he was referring to as well...time to pull out DVD #2 and do some freeze frame action myself...oh, and the part where Naota swings the bat in ep4 was very cool, though I also like the part in ep2 where Naota/Canti stops the other robot's attack with the side of his hand (and Little Busters kicks in right as it happens), as well as Super Red Glowy Naota in ep 6.

Both manga scenes are also quite excellent, especially the one in episode 6, with the jab at the scenes being too tiring for the crew. I don't know why, but that make me laugh hysterically the first time I saw that.
No matter how hard how I try to decide, my favorite part of this show changes every five seconds.

Super Red Glowy Naota
is some of the best stuff I have watched since I first saw Akira, not to mention "The Pillows" taking names in the background

When I saw that, I lost it. Watching the guys carry the manga boards out put that scene over the top
People are going to read this stuff, we shouldnt say anymore. Anticipation stinks. Im gonna go to bed. Here's to Haruko!

Yup, then you have the battle between him and Haruko afterwards, which is insanely cool, then you realize that these people are dueling with friggin' guitars, and you realize the scene is both cool and hysterical at the same time...man, this is making me want to go and watch the whole thing all over again...

Man, I sure hope they get away with showing everything unedited. Their's so much stuff in this show that could catch some flack.
BTW, just watched the whole thing again for the third time. Damn, I never get tired of it.

For those of us who've already seen it, or for those that don't mind getting spoiled, here's (http://www.agefive.com/FLCL/) an excellent resource site to read through. Lots of neat stuff to think about while watching the series.
