Hello people. I'm coming to you allllll the way from Comic Con 2003. I was getting a journal ready so people could read my findings, but there seem to be problems. By problems I mean the hotel computer won't let me use the interface. Jerks. :(

UPDATE: I got into my journal! Here you go, folks. Here I'll post all my comic con findings, and only here will I post them. Pass it around to your friends if you wish.

Also, Cartoon Network does indeed have a credit for co-production.

That's pretty cool. I guess it's official that Big O is probably the closest we'll get to a CN original AS action 'toon for a while.

Hope Comic Con reveals some new juicy tidbits. http://www.darthnuriko.com/forums/html/emoticons/drool.gif

Comic COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!![/brak]

So Big O's production values haven't gone down, eh? That's good to know. I didn't expect that they would, it doesn't seem like it would be that much more expensive to make than, say, Justice League, and it's not like CN had to foot the entire bill themselves (although exactly how much they did pony up is up to question), but it's still nice to know.

Keep us posted.

You lucky so and so!

Be sure to ask one really off the wall question to the AS panel ala the Daily Show. And for god's sake keep a straight face when you do it! Or at least create one uncomfortable silence. I recommend asking them a well thought out question about Stripperella and how its high ratings have affected AS, for example. Take in their look of horror and confusion...and reiterate. Don't Fanboy out either, you can tell them you were joking later.

Lucky so and so.

Anyways, if I remember, Brendon Small is going to be there...if you ask any question, ask about HM DVDs (actually, I'm sure someone will ask that...but do it anyway, I command you).

did. their only comment was a 2004 DVD release.

Big O season 2 DVDs begin in December. they have no plans for a complete series boxset.

No comments on Zeta Gundam except they expect a DVD release in 2004. An LE complete series boxset will come out first as well. F-91 will have a limited theatrical release, and there will be a new PS2 game called "Encounters in Space." Also a big Zeta toy line is coming.

no comments at all regarding Gundam SEED.

pardon me if any of this was mentioned at Anime Expo.

2. Will they be season or best-of?

did. their only comment was a 2004 DVD release.
Much as I suspected, but thanks for asking anyways. ;)

Big O season 2 DVDs begin in December. they have no plans for a complete series boxset.
Would like a little clarification here, if you can give it. Did they seem to mean that there wouldn't actually be a box for the entire series at all (such as included with the first volume of the second season), or just that there wouldn't be a way to purchase the entire show together at once?

Killtacular
07-18-2003, 11:46 AM
You know, asking Action questions is kind of stupid, because the staff there is from the Comedy portion of Adult Swim, like last year and the year before. They only slightly know about what action shows are planned. They wouldn't know anything about "getting anime outside the action peghole" or if AS has picked up Ninja Scroll TV (which I doubt, unless they, like me, want to shut someone's never-ceasing babble up).

Andrew
07-18-2003, 02:57 PM
I think the problem here, Matt, is that they did give a list of Action shows last year. Whether they really knew what was being licensed or they just listed what they'd heard in the halls that the anime folks were looking into, it doesn't matter. They did it before, so people will expect them to do it again. *shrug*

Arxane
07-18-2003, 04:58 PM
According to the list of guests at the panel, all of the panelists will be voice actors of Adult Swim original shows...all, except Mike Lazzo, who's moderating the thing. So he might be the one to talk to about those kinds of things, although ASA definitely doesn't seem to be the focus of the panel.

And like Matt said, asking them about whether they have "Ninja Scroll" or something like that is kinda redundant and stupid. If people want to suggest "Ninja Scroll", they can do so on the AS.com boards, which have actually seen far fewer "RETURN INUASHA" threads. In fact, there seems to be a surge of "INUYASHA IS STUPID" threads lately...

...but that's getting off topic.

StrangerAtaru

Just thinking: ask to see if "Gum, Disease" will be on the SGC2C DVD coming soon. I know it wasn't on the list before, but it was an early episode, and having this DVD wouldn't be complete without Space Ghost's "strange mixes", the gum rants, the glaring teeth and the Bonaduchi POV of "the fight" (which is also mentioned in the Donny Osmond interview in "Fire Drill")

Alright, cool stuff. Gotta love the "anime is teh s uck" T-Shirts (I think the as.com board has proved to be useful...in an odd way). I like the "spreading out" of the premiere dates, so there'll probably be something to watch every week for a longer period of time. I think the Halloween/New Year's Marathons were to be expected, and should be good. "Spacecatraz" seems like a Mooninite/Emory & Oglethorp episode to me, so that should kick ass. And the HM soundtrack is a GREAT idea...definetely buying that one (no DVD, but cool nonetheless).

"Spacecatraz" must be the Mooninites/Emory & Oglethorp spinoff they mentioned in the IGN interview. Nice to see them going somewhere with that.

As for the HM CD...if it has full 2 or 3 minute versions of some of the Home Movies songs (specifically "Don't Kill Children") then I'll buy it the second it hits store shelves.

Expect something big anime-related in Spring...bah, now I'm going to be wondering about it for months...

And, sadly, it looks like we'll be getting a grand total of 3 Birdman episodes this year. It's going to be 2010 before we get the DVD.

Where did they say no new anime til the spring :D Simply because they don't have anything new to announce (we've already got FOUR new things coming up in the next month or so in Big O 2, FLCL, Blue Gender and Inu Yasha, thats enough to last for a while) doesn't mean we won't get something new in say late October/November. Or even sooner. The big thing in the spring might be Zeta Gundam but I'm expecting it before then unless they decide to break their long tradition of airing full length Gundam shows on TV before releasing the DVDs.

"Birdman: In 2004."

F**K. Had to get that out of my system.

Anyway, at least there's new episodes of ATHF next month. And I like the idea of another Adult Swim marathon on New Year's Eve.

Also, that was Maurice LaMarche (Fred Flintstone, Blue Falcon) as the representative for Birdman. I still don't know why Gary Cole or Stephen Colbert weren't available. Oh well.

Delthayre
07-20-2003, 09:51 AM
The absences of Colbert and Cole may have to do with them being relatively high profile (I could identify them in a crowd, whereas I have no idea what Maurice LaMarche look like).

I do wonder if the absence of any new anime until spring means the card interrupted by MacGuirk was incorrect, refers to something else, or is accurate and they're just not telling us the full story.

And here's hoping for Rejected.

And does anyone know why it takes so long to get new episodes of HB:AaL? Is it a long production time, or some odd legal issue, or maybe they can only send new episodes when the martians aren't looking?

It costs more to produce than the other 15-minute shows, because it uses traditional animation.

The two other aliens are Emory and Oglethorp. They are, apparently, space Germans (or Austrians, in fact I always thought of them as Austrians). I'm always suspicious of spin-offs, I'm just not sure that those characters could support a series of their own.

New anime will more than likely premire in September.

The two anime series hinted at in the card a few weeks could have had the deal finalized in back in April or May. Also, they're not saying they won't acquire any till spring, they just haven't goy any others than what they have comeing up.

I wonder what the big thing in spring could be? Maybe:

Zeta Gundam
An ADV Property
Hellsing
Cowboy Bebop the movie
Wolfs Rain

Tenchi OVA 3
Witch Hunter Robin

It could be any of those. We'll just have to wait till spring.

I was at Bandai's panel on Thursday and got a trivia question right: "First person to die in Outlaw Star?" The answer was Hot Ice Hilda, although someone before me said a Tao Priest and got a prize too (but mine was the answer they were looking for). The prize was an Argentosoma box w/ vol. 1. I was wearing a s-CRY-ed shirt and a straw hat on the first day.

I was at the Gundam panel on Friday, so I got to see the first episode of Zeta Gundam... and yeah, it's Blue Water, and the voices are different. I was the guy who asked about the dubbing studio and also asked if their were any plans to show it on Toonami or AS. Also, I was the guy who got the question "Who's the leader of the Magnac Corps" wrong (I said Quatre, the right answer was Rasheed), but then I got the question "Which were the first Gundam series brought over by Bandai?" right (Movie Trilogy, 0080, 0083). I got a s-CRY-ed tshirt (which I already had). I was wearing a Witch Hunter Robin shirt.

Adult Swim Panel: I was in the second row, a little over on the left side of the theater. I had on a NERV shirt, Lupin sideburns (http://www.gamebunker.com/staff/vekou/sideburns.jpg) and a sign on my back that said "cus anime is teh s uck" (http://www.gamebunker.com/staff/vekou/tehsuck.jpg). When the topic of shirts came up, I stood up and screamed and pointed to the sign on my back... then some guys on the right side of the theater stood up and actually had made shirts of their own that said that on them... heh. Well, I still got some laughs from the people around me. Also, when the topic of Tree House Pals or whatever that horrible show is called was brought up, I was the guy who screamed "NO!"... :D The clips they showed us were great, and everyone on the panel was ****ing hilarious, especially Bret Butler (Vin Diesel's cheesy cousin) and Brendon Small, who just wouldn't stop talking. It was also really cool to hear all the VA's do their voices. I got Andy Merrill's autograph (http://www.gamebunker.com/staff/vekou/andy.jpg) afterwards (if you're wondering why he wrote that, it's because I told him that I've been watching SG:C2C since about the fourth grade and have grown up listening to his voice) and also a free tshirt, some chocolate, and a frightening pin-up poster with Capt. Murphy on it. Overall I'd have to say that the Adult Swim panel was worth the $27 admission price to Comic-Con alone. It was so much fun, and I can't wait for something like this to happen again.

From what I hear they aired the first episode of Zeta Gundam dubbed there and it is infact pronounced as 'Tee-tans' rather than 'Titans'. :(

Not AS related but may as well mention it while on the subject. Gundam SEED is getting a sequel TV series starting in Oct. 2004 :(
No, you're wrong. It was pronounced Titans. I was there for it.

And yeah, about the next Gundam series: Jerry Chu specifically asked not to post that on the internet. Whoever spelled the beans on it and told everyone,
SHAME ON YOU.

I think I got the biggest kick out of the guy who just slapped a paper to his back saying the infamous phrase and the [adult swim] tag written in shaky black pen. It was just so in the spirit of Adult Swim..
That was yours truly. :)

Yeah, that was me... I should have gotten someone to take a picture of me. Damn!

RE: Zeta Gundam, here's an excerpt from a convo SSJ 64 and I had (light spoilers).

lilprince 204: So, where is Z Gundam going to? Toonami or AS?
Son Vekou: I asked that specifically, they have no plans.
lilprince 204: Hopefully it'll go to AS
Son Vekou: Perhaps
Son Vekou: Also, I saw the first episode.
Son Vekou: It's Blue Water. Voices are different.
lilprince 204: How's Kamile voice? Does it sound good?
Son Vekou: Char's voice is allright, kind of sounds like his Ocean voice. Kamille's is okay.
lilprince 204: Damn, time delay
Son Vekou: Heh
Son Vekou: Translation, pronounciation was perfect. AEUG is pronounced "Eh-yoog", Titans "Tite-ens".
Son Vekou: Japanese title cards used, of course. No intro or credits, I assume that the tape they showed us was a rough production copy, seeing as how it had a counter at the top throughout it (much like when they screened G Gundam last year and Superior Defender at AX).
lilprince 204: If Z Gundam was shown on Toonami, the only scene that might be edited in the first episode is when that officer kicks Kamille in his head.
Son Vekou: Doubt they'll edit that
Son Vekou: I think there was a bit of a blood spray during that fight scene, though, that'll be edited.
Son Vekou: When Kamille was wailing on that officer, everyone in the audience was going "ooh!"
lilprince 204: LOL
Son Vekou: Haha...

I hope there is some backlash. Jerry (god bless him) specifically asked for the panel attendees not to let that information leave the room or post it on the internet.

I got the sideburns at Pioneer's booth.

I don't know, sounds fishy to me. Jerry knows full well how quickly things get out of hand on the web, even when based on miniscule information that isn't even necessarily true. A new Gundam series is major news. Bandai isn't gonna leak information about it unless they want to, ESPECIALLY at a convention. Even if Andrew Tei kept his mouth shut and didn't report it at AnimeOnDVD.com, the odds are atleast one fan who was there would have leaked it on the web anyway. I doubt Bandai wants this kept under wraps, cause if so why announce it at a convention when it is so easy for anyone there to simply mention it on the web and within 24 hours have it reported on every major anime site on the web? I frankly don't see there being any backlash towards AnimeOnDVD.com at all.

Wait a second... I'm confused. Is the new Gundam that wasn't supposed to be released to the Internet yet the sequel to SEED, or is it something completely different?

The one that wasn't supposed to be released on the net is the sequel to SEED.

[Edit: ignore the idiocy that follows]

I'm not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but adultswim.com put up a clip from comicon: http://www.adultswim.com/clips/other/comiccon/index.html

It won't work for me, but maybe it'll work for you.

Did anyone else get a promo DVD they handed out? It's got Space Shost's "Batmantis" and the ATHF "Mooninites" episodes on it, as well as cards exclusive for the DVD. All and all, it's the coolest thing I got at Comic con. On the DVD they have a listing of all the episodes that are going to be on the SG release, but I have to go back and take a look at what those are...

On the first one, could youm do a left-to-right label of all of the people in the panel? I can recognize Mike Lazzo, Brendon Small, Brett Butler, and C. Martin Crocker, but I can't make out the others.

Yeah, I got that. Pretty cool, but the coolest thing I got there? No.

@ LFV: Looks like you were sitting very close to me... I was in the second row, slightly on the left side of the hall.

@ Aurochs: He played Brain (from Pinky and the Brain), Apache Chief and Fred Flintstone (Harvey Birdman) and many others.

Maurice LaMarche has had a part, major or minor, in seemingly every animated series and movie made in the US in the past 15 years. He's got a fabulous deep voice and great range, as well as the Orson Welles impersonation that made him famous (c.f. the Brain). He's even the voice of the Chief over on Stripperella, easily the best character on that show.

Bandai didn't leak or announce anything. You're don't understand this situation at all.

I don't think Jerry himself knew the information. Satoru-san (Sunrise guy), who was sitting in the front row and just stood up and said it when a fan asked about the next Gundam series to be released in Japan. Jerry was caught off-guard by this surprise announcement, and that's why he asked us not to post it on the internet yet.

damn. this is the 2nd year i forgot to ask some of you people where you'd be. I'd really like to meet some of you guys in person and discuss AS stuff at the con...-_-

oh well. maybe next year.
i couldn't even get in...well i did, but it was up against the wall breaking the firecode, and when they started herding people into the middle aisle-way seats, i took off...it just wasn't worth it at that point.

I think this falls under the category of "You know you're an AS fan when..." (Yeah, it's mine).

I heavily enjoyed comic con and the free AS goodies. Those T-shirts were quite heavily compressed!

I do have a few photos of the AS Panel, but they didn't come out very well.
