When I was watching the opening to The Big O last night I saw a few headlines that I hadn't noticed before (you know, the newpapers in the background). One had something in German that I didn't see long enough to translate, and one said "Jazz Messengers." Only fitting, it seems, since there are German elements in the show (Schwarzwald, etc.) and jazz music.

A tribute to Cowboy Bebop?
Considering Big-O came first...

Um... no. Bebop's original chopped up run of 12 episodes began in April of 1998. Big O wasn't on the air til late 1999. :p

No. The Jazz Messengers was a bebop jazz group. They were around long before Cowboy Bebop was. Apparently one of the animators at that studio is a fan.

So The Big O staffers like Jazz too. This show just keeps getting better and better. Now, if only I could get a clear enough look at the German stuff to translate some of it.

Yeah. The background words in the opening of Cowboy Bebop basically talk about this, saying how a group of jazz musicians got together and created a group that did things differently than the norm, and liken them to the Bebop crew.

The only headline that I can ever see really clearly is "Lester Young is Dead." I don't suppose anyone knows what that's a reference to without getting into spoilers?

Does anybody think that Roger sorta looks like Bruce Wayne from Batman? He even has a butler like Bruce Wayne.

lets see what google says....
Ah, ok, he's another Jazz musician, who appartently had a comparivatively short, but productive career. His instrument: The Tenor Sax. His style influenced many post-WWII saxphonists, including the legendary Charlie Parker.
I think I might have to check some of his stuff out.

Lester Young (http://www.pbs.org/jazz/biography/artist_id_young_lester.htm) was a well-known Jazz saxophonist.
(note: Blast you Olson! You beat me to it!)

DemonKrowno's Fun Facts #1:
One of the Jazz Messengers' songs is titled "My Funny Valentine". Oh yus.

Yay! Finally, an un-answered question that I can answer! I bought the newest issue of Anime Insider recently (it's a really good magazine, you should check it out), and it has a thing in a Big O article comparing Bruce Wayne and Roger Smith. Odd coincidence, huh? It's entitled Bats in the Belfry Batman and Roger Smith-Separated at birth? Below it says:

Whenever reading this on the main page all of the text is jumbled. Just FYI. Although, when going to the reply page, it's all ok.

From what I understand, the animation studio behind Batman: The Animated Series are the same bunch that animate Big O.

? What  ? If it's about how it looked, I thought that putting spaces to make it look centered would actually make it centered. The lines inbetween the Bruce and Roger info were supposed to be lined up, but I didn't think to preview the post. If that's what the above quote meant, then that's why it looks the way it does. But hey, it's funny, and readable.

Anime Insider
BTW, if you ever happen to look through that and there happens to be a piece of fan art by Jake Stringer in there, that's mine. I know it's no longer on AS, but sence it used to be, maybe I won't get in trouble for not talking about AS stuff and tell you I'm working on a really nice fan art drawing of the 7 main characters on the beach standing around a sand Maze Castle. It's really good looking, I just have to scan it over at my half brother and grandmother's house and email it to Anime Insider. Wish me luck (As in hope they actually look at it and put it in the magazine.) :) If I can find how, I'll try to put it in a post so you all can see it :D

My understanding is that they worked on only two episodes of Batman: TAS (during the animation process in Korea), but that a few of the guys who later went on to be key in the character designs of The Big O were heavily influenced by the experience.
