Whether it be for everyday use, for games, or for something else, I bet a few people here own old computers like the Commodore 64, the Atari 8-bits, or the Apple II. I own 3 old computers. I have a Commodore 64, a Commodore VIC-20, and I'm expecting an Atari 600XL in the mail soon.

I had a Commodore 64, but I was sadly forced to part with it many years ago...

Other than that, I have a couple other old system's lying around, but the C64 was the only 'vintage' computer.

I have a couple, but I mostly use emulators for that "Old School" feeling.

I use a Powerbook 540c (from c. 1994), decidedly antiquated (but not nearly as antiquated as the Commodores :-) )...

Let's see...

Got a pre-1984 Atari in my closet (my dad's).
Have an operating 1991 no name PC with a Miracle Keyboard (ever hear ducks quack out "Ode to Joy" or "The Great Gate of Kiev?")
Am currently typing on a 1995 Dell (and we just upgraded to Windows 98 in 2000!)
Had a secondhand Sega Genesis from about 1998 to 2001(?)

Do I win for amount of Smithsonian gear?

My dad used to have a Powerbook 180c...after spilling coffee on the keyboard, the floppy drive stopped working. Then the battery eventually lost the ability to charge. When the power cord wiggles, it shuts off. He gave it to me, and a few months later a friend dropped it, which was probably the reason why shortly afterwards the top inch of the screen stopped working. After that, I sold it to an idiot friend of mine named Rich who had more fun throwing the thing than using it (but sad to say I really can't blame him). Then, he gave it to another friend of mine named Chris, who has it now, and...it, uh, sits around and stuff.

I don't currently have this hooked up, but I got an Apple II from a friend of mine named Joe, who had it sitting around unused in his basement. The floppy drive doesn't work, so I can't save any programs I write on it, but it's fun to play around with once in a while.

My godparents Pat and Ray have a Commodore 64 which used to be my dad's, and I really wish I could have it, because it's a great little machine. :bosko:

What does your Atari look like? And BTW, a Genesis doesn't qualify for an old computer. It's a classic video game console (like the Atari 2600 and the NES).

I've got a 1991 NEC 386, NES, and Atart 2600 collecting dust in the attic somewhere.

All my old computers are in pieces. The pieces either lie in a junkyard somewhere, a place where people actually use old PC parts, in someone else's computer as recycled material to make new parts, or somewhere else.

Didn't you read my post above? Old video game consoles don't count. Oh, BTW, old PCs don't count either because modern-day PCs are still based upon those old PCs.

The only older computer in my house is a Commodore Amiga A1200 of 1993 vintage plus a 1084 monitor of March 1992 and a Star LC24 Printer of Apr 1991. At the moment it's in a cupboard collecting dust. We also have a few older games consoles.

Our computers aren't really all that old. Over 5 years at the most. I do remember that in middle school we still had the old apples - the black screen with green letters and stuff.

Oh yeah! I used to have Apple IIs at my elementary school! Of course, now they use eMacs.

Well, maybe you should surgically define the criteria for "old computers". Even a 386, which modern PCs are "based on" is a quantum leap back. Almost like saying that they're related because they use chips and electricity.
Throw us a bone here. Most people here have been using computers less than ten years, so most likely they'll be PCs.

Well the thing is, modern PCs are backwards-compatible with the old PCs. For example, you take an old hardware card from an old PC. If you plug it into a modern PC, it will work as long as you have the driver disk.

I'm on a Pentium MMX 166mhz with 64mb RAM and a 2.99GB hard drive right now. Stuck on 640x480.

Well when I was at primary school (elementary school) we used to have the best in technology[I]the most advance computers ever! Wait for it......BBC computers. I don't know if your familiar with them in the US, but they would have been at least 4-5 years old (which would be about 1990 when I used them).

When I moved from Leeds my new high school had at the time 6 years ago 4 year old computers which were buggered, and I don't even want to say the brand I wouldn't be able to stop laughing. The finally got rid of 'em when I was about to leave.
