First we send:
4 carrier task forces
F-16's (air-to-air, air-to-ground 1st line fighters)
F-15's (tactical bombers)
B-52's (strategic bombers (old))
B-2's (strategic bombers (new))
THEN we announce we can't find anything worth bombing?
at least we seem to be avoiding duplicating the USSR's plan...
But Wait! we'll have the CIA fix the problem (that the CIA, in large part, created)...
am I missing something?

hehe
Britan sent the SAS there
Russia sent weapons to north Afganistan fighters
And I hear that the mob is pissed that they can't get drugs into america so they are probably there too.
Looks like the US better get its ass in gear

The thing you're missing is that there really isn't much there that's worth bombing. Because of the country's war with the former USSR, and the country's ongoing Civil War, the entire country is already a wreck. Bombing them again, in the words of a writer familiar with Afganistan, would only "stir the rubble."
All the stuff the US is interested in, mainly Bin Ladin, would be hidden in Afganistan's myriad mountains, and could only be flushed out via ground troops... assuming we even find out where to look. Therein lies the problem.

Therein lies the problem. The real problem is people thinking we can find this guy with a civil war going on. We would have to put an end to it before we could even start looking for Bin Ladin.

The rebels are more American friendly though aren't they? They would probably support us coming in and "helping out."

But odds are Bin Ladin is not in rebel controled Afganistan.

well, yeah, that was pretty much my point - since simply everybody said there was nothing to bomb, why the deployments?
and ground trrops, as the USSR found out, are not exactly effective in that part of the world.
this is a 'go big or stay at home' proposition

Eh...the U.S. military probably sent the troops out to make sure we don't look weak and calm the fears of U.S. citizens. That's my guess.
