View Full Version : Do you like everything in AS?

You must love *something* in AS if you are here, but do you love *everything* in AS?
I love the comedies, but the Japanese dramas just leave me cold. Are the same people watching both?
Also, Home Movies never makes me laugh. Do people who like the other shows like Home Movies too, or are there two different audiences? I expected HM to be really funny. Doctor Katz was funny.

Like other networks, they have their share of fresh and rotten apples (though Fox and TNN are getting worse and worse).
The only shows on the block I don't like are The Oblongs, Baby Blues, Pilot Candidate, and Reign. Everything else ranges from mediocre to good.
If case you are wondering, I like Home Movies. Yes the animation takes some getting use to and it does move slow at times, but the good writing is a plus with me.

I like everything on Adult Swim that doesn't rhyme with Maine or Dripping Mends.
Seriously, the animes are brilliant, and the comedies are hilarious. I'm probably the only Adult Swim fan that's strongly opinionated towards one particular show.

> The only shows on the block I don't like are The Oblongs, Baby Blues,
I haven't seen BB, but I did see a quick ad for it and it didn't look that interesting. It looked like more social observation, which I rarely find funny.
> Pilot Candidate, and Reign. Everything else ranges from mediocre to
> good.
I don't know Pilot Candidate. Is that anime? Is Reign the show about Alexander the Great not wearing any pants? Maybe I'm just an old man, but anime almost always leaves me cold.
> If case you are wondering, I like Home Movies.
Well, I'm glad that someone finds it funny because they keep showing it.

Well, their theme song pretty much explains the show: "It's All Been Done Before". It's Simpsons-light light humor with most of the episodes suited for parents with young children.
I don't know Pilot Candidate. Is that anime? Is Reign the show about Alexander the Great not wearing any pants? Maybe I'm just an old man, but anime almost always leaves me cold.
Pilot Candidate is an anime and so is Reign: The Conquerer (or so I'm told). Even when you get past the lack of clothing observation, the show is still terrible.
I like everything I've seen on Adult Swim. I only saw the first few episodes of Reign, but I enjoyed what I saw, and I might eventually get around to watching the rest of it (VCRs are your friends, kids.)
The Oblongs is a great show, in my opinion. I really can't see why so many people are against it.
Ripping Friends definitely didn't belong on Adult Swim at all, but there were some episodes that were at least moderately amusing, and it was interesting to see them try different types of shows to see what works best on AS.
I only saw one episode of Pilot Candidate, and I wasn't paying much attention to it, but from what I saw it was nowhere near as horrible as so many people had said it was.
And Home Movies is probably my favorite show on Adult Swim at the moment. I love it.
Oh, wait, I know two things I saw and absolutely could not stand.
LEWIS LECTURES AND THE GROOVENIANS.
Groovenians wasn't quite as bad as Lewis Lectures; it just wasn't meant for Adult Swim. On the other hand, Lewis Lectures was awful. Maybe it's just that we were all hoping to see Rejected instead of that. Eh, whatever. I'm done talking.

Only things I really don't like on ASC are The Ripping Friends, and possibly The Oblongs (which is alright, just nothing special). Baby Blues isn't my cup of tea, but I think it belongs on the block.
As for Home Movies....see my sig for more info on my opinion.
Oh, as for ASA...well, not my style. I can appreciate that they are fine shows, but most of them just aren't for me. Well, one exception...Cowboy Bebop was excellent.

The only shows I don't like on AS are Pilot Candidate, Reign (my sister is forcing me to watch this crap), any of the Toonami shows they put there back when they had AS Action (I just didn't like them there because they were edited to Toonami standards), and Baby Blues, though I liked two episodes. The rest of AS I either love (Family Guy, Lupin, CB, Harvey Birdman, SeaLab 2021, Trigun, The Oblongs) or like and/or think it's okay (Futurama, The Brak Show, Home Movies, any of those AS specials except for Rejected, which never aired, but I liked the promos to it).
The Oblongs is a great show, in my opinion.
Same here.
I really can't see why so many people are against it.
A lot of people say that The Oblongs is mean-spirited, depressing, and not funny. I beg to differ. I think it was great (with the exception of some bad eps.)
Ripping Friends definitely didn't belong on Adult Swim at all, but there were some episodes that were at least moderately amusing, and it was interesting to see them try different types of shows to see what works best on AS.
If RF weren't a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon, it would fit right in with AS. I'm just waiting for John K. and co. to make those really adult episodes of RF. Then I can die happy. :D
Yes, AS is great, but it would be better if CN made some series instead of picking up failed ones from other networks. I like the PJs but I can't picture it on AS (maybe on VHS or DVD) and I do applaud CN for bringing back Futurama and Family Guy when FOX just threw those shows away like they were trash.

Well... I've yet to see Birdman, Oblongs, Mission Hill, Reign, Pilot Candidate, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, (Yeah, you heard me...) Trigun, or Family Guy.
I've only seen a little of Brak Show, Sealab, InuYasha and Baby Blues.
(I plan to catch most shows above ASAP)
But, out of what I HAVE seen, I only dislike Ripping Friends. (I REALLY should watch more AS)

I absolutely love Inuyasha. Futurama, IMO is one of the greatest American cartoons of all time. I have a special place in my heart of The Oblongs, and I think Home Movies and Aqua Teen Hunger Force both deserve Emmys. (Okay, that was a little bit far, but you get what I'm saying.)
I love Trigun.
I love Family Guy.
Even though I've seen Cowboy Bebop 4 times in a row, I love it.
I miss Pilot Candidate, Tenchi, and Outlaw Star. They helped fuel me in the late night hours. Every time I tried to watch Gundam 0083 I fell asleep.
Can't they put Mission Hill in a better timeslot?
And where is my Brak Show?
In other words, besides the jumbled ones above you, I pretty much love everything on Adult Swim. Now all of a sudden, I can even stand Lupin III.
As for Reign, well...
Throw away every copy of every episode (yep, all 13 of them) and then soak them in kerosene.
Oh, and my underpants own Ripping Friends. :D

i like or somewhat like most of the AS shows but here's http://www.itty-bitties.com/emot-w-hat.gif i don't like...
- The Oblongs
- The Ripping Friends
- The Brak Show (well, the later episodes got a little better)
thank Mike Lazzo the Ripping Friends are gone from AS. i heard they were making new episodes, but we don't know http://www.itty-bitties.com/emot-w-hat.gif has been going on. for all we know they may have backed out of the deal. i guess if that happens John K will need to rely on TNN.
http://www.itty-bitties.com/emot-w-hat.gif
Haha, that is great.
Right now, the only show I really avoid is the Oblongs. Home movies never intrested me, but I'll watch it every now and then.

I didn't like Reign because it was just not executed very well, and it bored me. Although I do respect Peter Chung's creative conception. Most critics of the show dislike it because it's either florid, artistic, abstract, a historical cartoon, or the characters don't have pants. I'm fine with all of those qualities about it. So I respect Reign, even though it doesn't entertain me. The Ripping Friends is retarded, simple as that. When my step-cousin made me watch it on Fox Kids I thought it was the most god-awful children's show conceived. It's not adult, and it doesn't belong on an adult block. If Cartoon Network made it a Cartoon Cartoon, I'd be fine. (I don't really watch any Cartoon Network programming, sans Adult Swim and Boomeraction) But it's not an adult show. When in came to Adult Swim, I tried to enjoy it, but it sucked just as horribly as it did on Fox Kids. Oblongs is pretty good. It's a nuclear family sitcom about lower class people, as apposed to the typical upper middle class family. Mission Hill turned me off at first, but it grew on me and I think it's brilliant now. I think The Brak Show is extremely excellent [as is everything Williams Street makes] and at times I like it better then ATHF. Sure, the first four or five episodes are kind of weak, but same with ATHF, SG:C2C, Home Movies and Sealab 2021. I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t like Home Movies. Baby Blues isn’t bad, actually, although I’m not devoted to it. Inuyasha is great, but it can't keep my attention. But I really love Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Lupin III and never miss them. The only specials that were really memorable were the Eltingville Club, Rejected, (although it never technically aired) The Venture Brothers, and Saddle Rash.

For the current weeknight schedule:
Futurama: Love it
Family Guy: Quite possibly my favorite animated comedy ever
Lupin: Liked the first run of eps, but is it me or has the voice acting gotten more annoying with the new episodes?
Inu Yasha: Great, but wearing out its welcome, where are the new eps already...
Trigun: Already saw it over a year ago so I haven't paid much attention to this run, but still a great show
Cowboy Bebop: As much as I love it, they need something new quick.
For Sundays, the only show I really can't stand watching is Ripping Friends which seems to be universally loathed. The WS stuff is great, with the exception of Harvey Birdman, I've had a few laughs but usually I just can't seem to find the humor in that show.

Only stuff I can't/couldn't stand on Adult Swim...
ANYTHING John K did, but his four shorts (the two Jetsons and the two Yogi Bear ones) even more than the Ripping Freinds. I don't even remember how long it took for those things to be over with, but once they were done I was realy to get up and dance for joy. I don't think theres gonna be anything that changes my opinion on John K. in general, unless I somehow can forget that Ralph Bashki exists, then I can focus more hate on John K.
Pilot Candidate- I'll admit I WAS intrested in this thing for about the first two episodes, but after the third, I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. Then I found some webpage with a glossary or terms and some other stuff, and the series started making an INFINTE amount more sense.
I was reading the forward to "Supertoys Last All Summer Long", and it had a quote from Stanley Kubric about how the best sci-fi just assumes you "get it" and doesn't go into detail about the science of the story (or some such like that). I actually held to that belief, but then I saw this show, and then I realized there should be at least SOME kind of explanation happening. Of course, if the writers aren't skilled in it, then the hell with it, why bother having the series in the first place.
Baby Blues - I don't nessicarily hate it, it has it's moments, but, as it's been pointed out, it's just a very mediorce series. It reeks of something that shoudl've aired on CBS or NBC in a transistion slot on their big sitcom nights.
The Groovians - I had such high hopes for this thing, then it aired. Dear GOD< i hadn't been so bored with an animated show since I rented Ralph Bashki's Wizards ... DAMN YOU GROOVIANS!!! You made me think of that wretched cartoon again. GAH. I swear, if Wizards ever EVER aires on Adult Swim, I'm kicking in my TV.
Captain Linger - Trouble if it's Fair - It was funny for a while, BUT THEN THIS WAS THE ONLY CAPTAIN LINGER SHORT THEY AIRED FOR LIKE A WHOLE FREAKIN' MONTH!!!! If Captain Linger ever comes back, please please please LOSE THE TAPE OF TROUBLE IF IT'S FAIR.
Saddle Rash/Finlke Files - I"m jsut putting these two together since they suffer from the same problem, they had the wrong length. I still think that Saddle Rash would've been better as the 15 minute show, and Finlke Files as the 30 minute show.
As for the rest of the shows that most people seem not to like...
The Oblongs is more in the same vein as Baby Blues, but it has more of a "wit" to it. Of course that's not saying much considering the book it's based off seems like it was written by a third grader that just learned about the "special hug" mommies and daddies do and the word "poopie".
Reign I LOVE. Mostly jsut because of the whole fantasy vein they threw in, which I think at least makes it more intresting. Well, not that I think the REAL story wouldn't be intresting, but if I wanted that, I'd go watch a documentry on the History Channel (and I would do that incase you're wondering :p ). As for the "no" pants thing, that never bothered me. I've seen worse. (edit - forgot this) Actually, the only thing that bothered me about it was that they put it on weekdays. They really should've put it on Sunday just so it was on once a week and it wouldn't get burned through so fast. That's just the problem I have with dramas. As much as I love Lawence of Arabia, I'm not gonna sit and watch a 24 hour marathon of it.

I never get to see AS on Sunday nights because I stay at my boyfriend's house on the weekends and he doesn't have cable. But the only current AS show I don't like is Family Guy. It just makes me think of the Critic without the funny stuff or the Simpsons without the clever. I didn't like Ripping Friends, Pilot Candidate, Reign, The Oblongs or Baby Blues. Yeah, I don't count Toonami filler. It's sole purpose was to take up scheduling space back when there were only real shows on Adult Swim Action. If I were to include the Toonami filler, I'd have to amend my statement so it said "I like everything on Adult Swim that doesn't rhyme with Maine, Dripping Mends, My Butt Candid Late, or Fun clam hero hero Nate tree." Tenchi (and to a lesser extent Outlaw Star) really merited a spot on Adult Swim uncut, (or slightly less cut) but like Matt Wilson proved in another topic, doing such a thing is difficult.

Okay, here's my boring rundown.... Futurama and Family Guy are consistently funny, it just comes down to whether I have time to watch them that evening or not. Lupin is so-so for me. I love Inu-Yasha but admittedly don't watch it much these days because I've seen everything they're showing many times over on either recorded eps on tape or on DVD. I'll tune in for new ones. Reign and Bebop were not that great for me. Worth one viewing and not much else. Trigun had some interesting eps, but didn't appeal to me past watching those episodes a couple of times. Mission Hill, Oblongs and Home Movies I can sit and watch but I won't lose sleep if I miss any of them. Everything else I don't particularly bother with. Besides wishing that Bebop would just stop taking up space on the line-up there isn't anything else I can point to and say "that has to go!".

I may as well rate the shows that I recall.
Family Guy, Harvey Birdman and Sealab are absolutely hysterical.
The Brak Show and Space Ghost can be very funny.
The Oblongs can be reasonably funny, although it is a little mean-spirited at times.
Mission Hill seems unfunny. Home Movies seems unfunny and mean-spirited.
Ripping friends is gross and unfunny. I don't mind gross per se. Ren and Stimpy and Southpark have been simultaneously gross and hysterical - but Ripping Friends just doesn't have their edge.
Futurama is such a mixed bag. I really wanted to love this show. Dr. Zoidberg and the Professor are great - they should get their own show with an unobtrusive straightman. Fry is alright, Bender is annoying, and most of the other characters just don't have much presence. Leela is a pain in the ass. She's callous, self-rightous and violent without being funny. If I see one more damned show in which she teaches some sexist jerk a lesson by kicking the crap out of him I'm gonna puke. For some reason, Groenings female main-characters never seem to get to do anything funny. He should write his scripts with all males, and then just pick one character at random and change the pronouns around to make them female.

The reason ASAction has Toonami shows in it is because if ASA wasn't started when it was, another block of programming would've taken the timeslot, and ASA might not have ever been able to start because of it. The Thursday time had to be sacrificed of course.
I don't know what williams street is referring too but that's the reason for them doing that originally.

Well, I like pretty much everything on AS well enough. Like everyone else, I have my favorites (Inu Yasha, Trigun, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021) and the stuff that I like less well but watch anyway (The Oblongs, Baby Blues, etc.). I have kind of a love/hate relationship with Family Guy, because I think on the whole it's a relatively well-done show with some pretty clever homages to other stuff, but it's annoying as hell for me for personal reasons. But on the whole, I can find something redeemable about every show I've seen (yes, even Pilot Candidate and The Ripping Friends). The only shows I positively hated were the John K. shorts with the Jetsons and Yogi Bear - those reeked. . . they just reeked!

You know actually, I'm sure for a new viewer like yourself it must seem strange that they package American comedies in the same block as Japanese dramas. But, of course, Adult Swim is intended to be part comedy and part action/drama. The problem is there AREN'T any American dramatic cartoons out there. All American action shows are marketed towards kids. That's just my take on it anyway. I wonder if there will ever be an American animated drama on Adult Swim? I'd imagine it would be a little more expensive to produce than their comedies though. I mean, an animated drama with Home Movies animation wouldn't really work too well...

I mostly watch Adult Swim because of the anime but, the comedy block has been improving.
I didn't like Home Movies the first time I saw it but, now it has grown on me. Futurama is good. Family Guy OWNZ ME. It's my fav comedy for the block. Harvey Birdman is a close second and last but not least is the Brak Show. Baby Blues and Mission Hill are OK. Everything else I don't like.
I love all the anime series including Reign and Pilot Candidate. Reign wasn't as bad as people made it sound. The animation took me back to the years of Aeon Flux and the storytelling was good as well. I like Reign...there I said it. Pilot Candidate is ok but, it could have been a LOT BETTER. I blame CN for showing the "Toonami" version of it on AS. Which bites even more is that the series ends at 13-14 eps. All the mysteries weren't solved and the manga was still going at the time...Oh well. Everybody makes mistakes. :p
I really really wish CN would show some eps of Cartoon Planet....

Well ill break it down:
COMEDY
Home Movies- An excellent comedic show with steadily improving animation and humor, as seen best in the most recent of episodes Coffins and Cradles.
Aqua Teen- Although this show is weird and random, it still has its humorous moments every so often. I must admit out of all the shows on Adult Swim, this is the one I dislike the most, although I have recently forced myself to like it.
Harvey Birdman- An excellent, humorous show with an excellent parody. "A bad superhero becomes an attorney." You cant go wrong with that.
Space Ghost- I’ve always loved SGC2C, its funny, sometimes weird, and almost always entertaining
Brak Show- I’ve heard criticism, but this is one of my favorite comedic shows on Adult Swim to date. It has random humor, and just the typical humor from Williams Street, its a great spin-off from SGC2C
Sealab 2021- You cant enjoy this show if you don’t enjoy randomness and weird humor. Its a great show if you just learn to appreciate it, which may take some time.
Baby Blues- A weaker show in the chain, but it has its moments. Still this is one of the shows which AS can do without.
The Oblongs- Supply and demand. It has its funny moments, but once again, I’m not so fond of it. It can definitely improve, but it has its strong points.
Futurama- Matt Greonings creative talent shines in this work of art, I find it much better than his previous work, The Simpson’s (especially recently), and shows his talents. There still are flaws, but its overall a great show.
Family Guy- This is now my favorite Adult Swim shows, Its humor and parodies are unbelievably hilarious. Its sudden flashbacks show its not at all hackneyed, and its character designs and concepts are original and stand out.
ACTION
Reign- Although the character designs are awful, the plot is intriguing, and towards the end Peter Chung manages to suck you in. It has many flaws, including the skimpy clothing, but its still a decent show.
Pilot Candidate- You probably never heard my criticize this show. Well although it has a great plot, this show did belong on Toonami. Its special effects were not all that spectacular, and it was extraordinarily complicated, but you can understand it if you watch it several times
Cowboy Bebop- Just perfect. Great characters, great designs, great plot, great effects, all around just perfect, although its been rerun way too many times. What can you do?
Gundam 0083- Another show that belonged on Toonami. This is one of my favorite Gundam series. Its plot is a little more dark than your average Gundam series, although Chars Counterattack was darker. It was pretty good, but not at the top of its class by far.
Inu Yasha- Also perfect, with an excellent plot, in depth characters, and beautiful designs. Inu Yasha's continuing designs hooks you into the series, and leaves you wanting more.
Lupin III- Poor character designs, and not the best comedy. The action scenes aren’t all that great either. This is really my least favorite Adult Swim program.
Trigun- Great comedy at the beginning, and a hooking plot towards the end. Its emotional and hilarious at the same time, and its character designs and analysis' are unbelievable. A must see for any anime fan, and one of the best Adult Swim shows to this date.
Now im going forever :)
Bye everyone!!

Home Movies seems unfunny and mean-spirited.
Boy, lots of people seem to disagree with you on this one. You're certainly entitled to your opinion that it's unfunny, although personally I disagree completely-- I find it hilarious.
However, I definitely agree with you on one thing-- Home Movies CAN be VERY mean-spirited. It's dark comedy, and personally I love that sort of thing. The character of McGuirk is so dark and depressed and his life is so pathetic. Every episode he gets some shred of hope for bettering himself and his situation, and every episode he gets that shred of hope torn away from him in the most painful and humiliating way possible. I honestly don't know WHY I find that as funny as I do-- but I do. It's like a train wreck, you can't watch, but you can't look away.

I don't find it that dark. Although a lot of people have a broader definition of "dark" comedy then I do. I don't find Adult Swim shows that dark. They're too goofy to be dark. Not enough angst.

Eh, it's all relative.

Yeah, I really never considered HM to be "dark". I mean, I follow you on your McGuirk comment, however I think the way his character is treated on the show is more three-dimensional than that. Sure, he's a pathetic guy (thats why he's funny in the first place), but I don't really think that the show treats the character in a "mean-spirited" way.
But, as you said, all relative. :melissa:

I hate Aqua Teen, The Oblongs, Family Guy.
My favorite Adult Swim shows are Lupin III, Futurama, Brak and Home Movies.
It was great, last new years I was at a party and we were all bumming around, waiting for the new year to start to set off the fireworks. The funniest thing on that night was adult swim something like 20 people were gathered around the television watching it for about two hours.

Well, I wouldn't consider ALL of Home Movies to be dark. Mostly just the McGuirk segments and certain other plot points, like Jason acting like an alcoholic with respect to candy and Melissa acting like his codependent spouse. And even those parts aren't as dark as, say, Fight Club.

Now I know you're entitled to your own opinion, but a lot of people judge SG:C2C based off of the earlier and weaker episodes, back when the show's humor depended on the absurdity of having a cartoon talk-show. If you like ATHF, Brak Show, and Sealab, I guarentee you'll like certain seasons of SG:C2C. Watch an episode from season 5, 6, or 7. They're brilliant. if you have seen episodes from that season, and I'm just assuming things, excuse me for being an *******.

Actually (I think this was mentioned in another thread), I like the older Space Ghosts just as much as the new ones. I mean, "Banjo", "Hungry", "Late Show", "Sharrock", "Lovesick", "Punch", "A Space Ghost Christmas"....all fine episodes. Not to say that the newer ones aren't good (actually, to be honest, I think the six episodes made for Adult Swim were some of the weakest, like "Justice Hole" and "Sweet For Brak"). Of course, that's just me. I think 1999 was the best year, overall...but now I'm just rambling.

It's all about Baffler Meal... Who knew that Master Shake used to have Inignot's voice and Frylock used to have Err's?

I'd have to disagree. The episodes that aired on Adult Swim are some of my favorite.

Hmm...well, I didn't mean all the AS episodes. "Baffler Meal" was excellent, "Knifin' Around" for the most part was great, "Flipmode" was near perfect random humor, and "Kentucky Nightmare" was decent (though overrated). I'm just saying, I think a lot of the old ones were just as good as the new ones.
