Mouse problems...

My families mouse is a pain. They are too lazy to get another on their guarantee, and I'm too forgetful to bring my own from the flat.

So..

Tell me what is wrong with it!!

It's not dirt, I've cleaned the tracks and wheels on it, and after a while of non use, the mouse seems to work fine, but it slowly becomes in active. You can remove the ball and turn the tracks and wheels to no activity. The cable seems fine.. could it be the track sensors? Anyone had this happen before?

I was gonna say the same thing. Laser is the way to go. Especially a wireless one. I might get one with my tax refund money.

If you insist in keeping the mouse you've got, sorry to say I can't help. They are pretty cheap, so I would just get a new one. The ball ones are especially cheap.

I dealt with a mouse with similar problems.

After spending a lot of time cleaning out the mouse, I decided it was better off to just get a new one.

I think your problem is a simple one. The ball inside the mouse might be just dirty. Just clean it with rubbing alcohol.

I'll give it a go... I remain skeptical.. as the wheel tracks don't seem to move when I roll them with my fingers.. but worth a try.. question is... have I drunk all the alchohol... *hic*

I had similar problems with my old mouse. I tried cleaning and cleaning my mouse, rubbing alchohol and everything. It functioned but never worked like it used to. If you keep cleaning it and it still doesn't work right, you should probably get a new one. Bring your mouse from your flat for your family to use and buy a new laser one for yourself. ^__^

It could be something between the sensor and the fly wheel, but getting to it requires taking the mouse casing apart.

I've had this happen to 3 mice and 1 joystick over the years.

After a few years of continous heavy use, devices just wear out. (I've also destroyed 2 Keyboards, and blown out 1 computer speaker system)

It certainly gets heavy use... *tries to get up, but finds his clothes have given up their identity and bonded to the chair...* .. curses...

Well looks like new mouse time.. :(

Years ago, the mouse I had prior to the one I currently have was AWFUL. It was always getting dirt and grime stuck on the little rolly things that hold the mouse ball in place, and needed cleaning like every day. It was really annoying when trying to roll the mouse about - nothing would go where you wanted it to.

I can't imagine a mouse without that little scrolly disc on it (I don't know the official term). It's a lot easier to use your middle finger (for a new purpose, no less!) to scroll pages instead of clicking and dragging. Most of the mouses (mice?) at my school DON'T have those, and I'm also really annoyed by that. :p

Could it have anything to do with the surface you use it on? Mine is on a wooden table and sometimes gets "stuck," but not usually for too long. The surface is clean, but it doesn't take much to make it stick.

I thought of that, but my surface is a lovely Duke Nukem 3D mouse-pad with a big buffed Arnie rip-off on the top, blasting away the heads of punk aliens. Good times, man. Good times. :)

No alcohol? I guess you can use soap and water.

The scroll wheel! I love that thing. I can't surf the internet without it. I don't see how it's physically possible.

Ever play the orginal? One of the many nefarious goals in it was to collect balloons! :p

Of course I played the original - and then the sequel. Good games, too. And hardly any rudeness or crassness or cheap shots at naked women in those two games...but that's neither here nor there, this is a post about mice, not Duke Nukem. :)
