X-Men: Evolution "Fun and Games"

A nice, fun little episode that would be kind of forgettable if not for the little twist at the end. Watching it over again, it was interesting to see how Risty manipulated everything. Mystique's very good at what she does. :p I wondered why Arcade didn't recognize the "players" as his classmates, particularly Kitty, who was said to be his friend. Oh well, guess he was just caught in the excitement. Not much to say about the Scott/Jean subplot except that Taryn's completely unnecessary, and Jean's constant jealousy is kind of tiresome. Loved the ending, but too bad we don't find out what's on the mysterious disk until much later.

I suspect Arcade just thought that the game's programmer used images of his classmates for characters and player avatars.

Upon this watching, "Beast of Bayville" is a lot better than I originally thought it was. There's a good mix of story, action, character, and plot. One of the more well-rounded episodes, though not an oustanding one.

JCA - The J Team
I was expecting something more climactic from this episode after how the previous episode ended, but it wasn't bad. It's really getting interesting with the talismans no longer the focus, but instead the threat of Shendu's siblings being released. It's nice that El Toro and Viper weren't just one-shot characters, and I hope they return in future episodes. It looks like the next episodes will be similar to the talismans episodes, in that they will find a door and the demon will either be released or stay sealed. Good episode, though the little mexican kid bothers me. 4/5 stars.

X-Men: Evo - Fun and Games
First off, I have to say, Mystique is back!

I'm so happy she didn't keep that scaly look that she received from that machine on Asteroid M, but I still prefer her original look. This one isn't bad, but she looks odd. Her face looks different and it was hard to get a good look at her new outfit. I was actually thinking of the possibility of Risty being Mystique during the episode, so it wasn't really a surprise to me. That saved the episode from being "just another episode". I don't like the addition of Taryn into the whole love triangle. It's already big enough. The party and Profesor X setup made the episode more justifiable. I'm very curious to see what exactly was on the disc and how she will present herself in front of the X-Men. 3.5/5 stars.

We already know what was on the disc- the data on the institute's new students.

Well, I thought there would have been more on the disc, since she always wanted to access Cerebro. Why would she just get the data on the new students? Also, why would she want the data on them?

Beast's origin episode rocks so much.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I would occasionally miss an episode of Evo because.....well....it was sucking. When I first watched this episode it was the moment I realized just how much this series was changing for the better.

Any Saturday Morning cartoon that can incorporate Shakespeare in a serious and dramatic matter is definitely one not to be overlooked. Although, I must say that girl that went flying towards Hank saying "I can't stop coach, catch me." confused me.

I wasn't sure if it was a class or a team, but if it was a team, wouldn't she HAVE to know how to stop?

Also, this may be my only and favorite Spyke episode. Not only does pretty much everyone in the show realize how annoying he is, but he actually comes through with a decent role for a good 5 minutes. Him screaming out the Shakespeare to a psycho McCoy was the only scene I can ever remember liking with him........well......that and trying to video tape Jean Grey changing. Gotta give him credit for that.

I haven't been seeing Beast too much as of the later though, but now if they'd just hurry up and bring Gambit into the fray with an episode like this.......GOD I WANT GAMBIT ON THIS SHOW!

Gambit is on the show, he first appeared in Day of Reckoning.

Gambit is on the show, he first appeared in Day of Reckoning.

I'm aware, what I meant was that I wanted an episode focusing on him. In "Reckoning" all we got was him coming out of the silver ball with cards in pt 1, and a scene with Rogue that made me scream "Hell yes!" until the card blew up.

That was the last time I saw him, I heard he got a speaking line, but never saw it. I've also seen his new look which gives him back his trenchcoat and black/red eyes. I have yet to see this on the show though, and I'm screaming at the gods to show me that more than I am with Matrix 2......and that's saying a LOT!

In Stuff of Villains Gambit got a lot of screen time, including a scene with Rogue where he called her 'cherie'. :)

Adrift = Boring = This episode has never interested me at all. Filler episodes should never focus so much on so few characters.

JCA - Jade Times Jade
This was an okay episode. Nothing really outstanding in this episode. The Jade clones were used well. It was a little weird seeing Valmont work so cooperatively with Shendu, but I guess it's useless fighting against it. Nothing else really to say about it. 3/5 stars.

X-Men: Evo - The Beast of Bayville
I missed the first half of the episode, but read what happened on Beyond Evolution (http://x-men.animationinsider.net) . :D This episode really impressed me. I'm not a big fan of Evan, but he wasn't so bad here. I like Beast's design, and it will be nice to see him in action officially as an X-Men. 4/5 stars.

X-Men: Evo - Adrift
A great episode, surprisingly without any action. I liked seeing the Alex/Scott bonding, which didn't go over the top like in the season one finale. You could really feel a sense of peril when Scott and Alex were out at sea. Back at the Institute, it looked really nice with the snowy landscape. The snowball fight was nice, with Beast giving his first 'lesson', but I wish they would at least acknowledge their names. I didn't really feel the Nightcrawler bit was really neccessary to the episode, but it did provide some laughs. The episode quality is slowly rising, and I can't wait to see what everyone is talking about in season three. I'm still waiting to see how the Risty/Mystique/Brotherhood thing develops and where Magneto has disappeared to. 4.5/5 stars.

X-Men: Evolution "Beast of Bayville"

A solid origin episode. I like Beast, and his interaction with Evan was nice. Spyke actually came through at the end, and this was one of his least annoying appearances. :) Loved the continuing misadventures of Principal Kelley--he really can't catch a break.

"Adrift"

A pretty boring premise to build an episode around, though the Scott/Alex bonding was enjoyable. I wish the subplot focused more on Beast adjusting to life at the Institute and snowball fight with the new recurits instead of the Kurt thing, which was little more than pointless fluff. The end was...interesting. Xavier has an odd sense of humor. :p

This was a great episode. Of course, since Angel and Magneto (and Rouge) have always been favorite characters of mine, getting all of them in one episode was a treat. The entire church scene was incredible.

Also...when Warren was reading the paper right before he stopped the mugger, the newspaper's title was the Daily Bugle...nice attention to detail.

Anyone else getting annoyed with Jean's constant jealously? Both times she saw Rouge talking to Scott she got a look on her face...I dunno, I was never a Jean Grey fan, even back when I used to read the comics...

It's nice to see that she and Scott aren't falling into a perfect, cliche relationship as perfectly and smoothly as I originally thought they would.

I'm somewhat annoyed by it too. In a lot of these Season 2 episodes, it's all she seems to do. I don't think it's very fair of her to be jealous when someone like Rogue or Tayrn makes a move on Scott, because hey, he's free game. Jean's taken.

"On Angel's Wings"

This is one of my favorite Christmas episodes. I liked so many things about this episode, including the Scott/Rogue bonding, Beast's quotes, Kurt accidently kissing Bobby, the prophet of doom chasing Rogue and Scott, the battle in the church, and the ending sequence showing what the X-Men did over the holidays. The episode managed to be touching without being sappy (though Rogue wiping away a tear when the little girl woke up was pushing it a bit). I would have loved to see how the Brotherhood spent Christmas. :p

That scene with Logan at the end of the X-mas episode.. they should have had him playing pool with somebody as a in joke..

Cap America, Alpha Flight, Victor Creed.. someone!

and ya, showing the Brotherhood during the holidays would have been a nice thouch as well..

X-Men: Evolution - On Angel's Wings
I was very impressed with this episode. The animation was just stunning. It captured the Christmas atmosphere very well. The Rogue/Scott bonding was great, but Rogue did come off a little too eager. I was hoping she would make it a little less obvious. Warren was handled very well. I loved his initial appearances. This was a great way to bring back Magneto. The battle at the church was good. Perfect ending showing what everyone was doing during Christmas. 5/5 stars.

X-Men: Evolution - African Storm
The had to get my hopes up of Evan leaving. :p

I was waiting for a focus episode on Ororo. They hardly ever show her, so it was nice to actually see a whole episode about her. The Hungan people spook was really well done. This would have been a perfect episode with Evan getting kicked out, but they had to leave him in. :( If they were going to leave him in, then they could have done it a lot better. This episode gets 4/5 stars mainly for the Ororo focus.

At first I thought African Storm and Beast of Bayville were practically interchangeable, as far as character development for Spyke was concerned, but African Storm was really the Spyke-centric episode. Sure, we got a look at Ororo's past, but she hasn't gotten much character development (neither has Beast, then again) since. I'd be curious to know why Spyke's attitude deteriorated after his (brief) conversation with Hank about being part of a team, etc. Guess it goes in one ear and out the other... This is the problem with shows like Evolution, having to balance action/story in half an hour.

Each and every episode is an hour long (or, more technically, each story is two parts) which really helps balance things out. I really hope that soon more episodic action series follow Justice League's format.

I hope not. Justice League is the most boring, generic thing ever.

I could not disagree more. While some Justice League stories have truley been worthy of the 1-hour format, the majority of them have not. There maybe half hour or 45 minute shows that were artificially extended with pointless fight scenes or shoehorned in dialogue that does not add anything to the story in the least. This was only one of many problems Justice League had with its first season, but this isnt really the thread (or message board) to go into that.

My advice to X-Men: Evolution and any other action/adventure cartoons out there - if u have the material for a 2-parter, write a 2-parter. If u dont, dont write a 2-parter.

I still hold the Season 2 finale "Day of Reckoning," to be one of the best Marvel cartoon episodes ever. Anyway, season 2 of Evo was great, the only thing that did marr it a little was the appearence of some duds like "Adrift" (good, but just filler) and "Retreat" (also good, but just filler). "On Angel's Wings" is my personal favorite single episode, it's calm, mellow, has a Angel, Magneto's return, and the Rogue/Scott dynamic pushed further. It can't get much better than that for 30 minutes.

Later.
