If Pioneer is so slow with Lupin III, why doesn't AS pick up the three movies from Funimation: The Secret of Twilight Gemini, Dragon of Doom, and The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure? I e-mailed them about it.

I don't know, it would be up to Cartoon Network if they wanted to air the movies, and that would mean another deal they would have to make with Funimation, otherwise don't count on them airing on Adult Swim anytime soon. I don't think you will get a response with an answer about this, besides it will take a lot more than one e-mail

Speaking of this I'm having a hard time finding Dragon of Doom in stores, while I have seen the first two movies.

Frankly, I don't have a clue. I can see them airing sooner or later since Cartoon Network seems to be gitty about picking up anything that FUNi puts out. But then again nowadays it seems that Adult Swim is focusing more on the Comedy part of it at the moment, since Anime is basically being pushed aside. But let's not get into that.

McEDIT:
Speaking of this I'm having a hard time finding Dragon of Doom in stores, while I have seen the first two movies.

Got this link off of ZStore.com.
Dragon of Doom: Uncut DVD (http://www.zstore.com/Detail.bok?searchpath=d8c8e05ff4601d8e12c8&category=Lupin%3ADVD%3AMovies&start=1&total=3&no=1513)

Hope that helps.

Pioneer, in addition to the TV series, also has the license to The Mystery of Mamo (which theyre calling The Secret of Mamo) which is considered one of the better Lupin III movies. so that may have a chance too.

Don't forget that Funi's Lupin movies have a different dub cast. CN may not want to confuse people.

That shouldn't be a problem for Mamo, though. I think the DVD for Mamo is due in July or August, so we might see it on CN by the end of the year.

Dragon of Doom does seem a bit rare in stores. I've only seen one copy in a store, and I bought it. They've got a fourth one coming out in May, Voyage to Danger.

Mamo is due July 29. I figured I'd have to track down the old, out-of-print, bare bones version before. Nice to know it's getting another chance. :D

Dragon of Doom doesn't seem so rare to me. I know it's always at Media Play. Also, www.dvdpricesearch.com is a good engine to use to find out which sites have a DVD at which prices. Fast & efficient, and much better than going through the sites yourself. Just make sure to only use the sites that have good user ratings.

I got my Dragon of Doom DVD from DVDPlanet.com with no problem. Maybe you guys should just stop shopping at Suncoast :p

I haven't seen the Twilight Gemini one, but I think the other two movies could work. The only thing I see CN having a problem with is the Neo-Nazi group in "Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure." Sure, they play a somewhat small role in the film (compared to everyone else in the movie, that is), but you still have to wonder if CN would consider airing Nazis when they're not the butt of Daffy Duck's jokes.

I just hope they don't air the bore-fest that is "Die! Nostradamus" (once it gets dubbed, anyway). That was the first (and worst) Lupin III movie I've ever seen.

That didn't stop them from airing Season 3 of DBZ...

CN might have a problem with Twilight Gemini due to heavy fanservice (two, count'em TWO Fujiko nude/topless scenes) and a she-male assassin, but then again that's the one that got me hooked on Lupin the third

"Herr Maphrodite" in Harimao's Treasure is pushing the envelope a wee bit...

Funimation has an editted version they could run if they wanted. Or I'm sure they could just cut those two scenes. The she-male assasin shouldn't be too big a deal. Is there some precedent AS has set with regard to cross-dressers that I'm unaware of? Personally, I'd say the main reason CN wouldn't air that one is it was kind of dull, IMHO at least. Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure is the best Lupin movie Funi has released thus far.

Well see, at least its possible to edit the film without sacrificing any crucial plot points.

(which theyre calling The Secret of Mamo)

Great going, Pioneer, you ruined the alliteration. You might as well give it a clever name like you did with the episode names.

And I really wish Pioneer could have translated the other Lupin movies. I'm relatively skeptical as to how good of a job FUNimation did.

Funi's dub is pretty unexceptional. I thought Lupin himself was okay, and Jigen may have been alright, but the rest of the dub lacks personality. I don't recall any horrible problems with the translations, but the scripts are kind of lacking. Dragon of Doom seemed pretty dull when compared to the peppy Pioneer dubs.

The great thing with Pioneer's Lupin III translations is that they maintain the humor of the show via re-writing dialauge and adding in jokes, while not sounding contrived (eg: the jokes they slip in childrens' anime) or without botching the plot. I imagine FUNimation wouldn't be good at that. I'm not a major fan of their translations. They'd probably make the movies more hokey and inane. I'm just glad Pioneer is doing one of the movies.

Actually, some of the jokes added to the Lupin III TV series dub ARE quite bad. References to the Simpsons, "Wind Beneath my Wings," Shaq, Robert Downy Jr (sp), and a bunch of other things that the people of the late 1970's shouldn't know about just ruin an otherwise terriffic script. Now while I don't mind the little insults thrown around ("all work and no play makes me you") or the added bits of sexual innuendo ("I was just observing the carpet. I can never turn down a good shag"), the references to modern things do seem quite out of place.

And hey, not all children's anime has bad jokes, either. I kinda enjoyed the Tears for Fears reference in this weekend's Pokémon episode :p

I'd die a happy man if CN allowed (preferably female) nudity on AS.

Anyway, with Mike Lazzo in charge, lets hope CN can loosen some standards and really push TV's buttons.

Ahhh....it doesn't bother me. The script is pretty inane anyway. (but in a good way) The modern references are funny, You can't expect that much continuity from a show featuring both the Loch Ness Monster and a scene in which a world-wanted man racing in public. I mean technically they should all be speaking in Japanese, and Lupin should have a French accent, but no one complains about that.

Re: FUNimation's different cast....
It's not so much the difference in cast that would confuse people, but I think the fact that FUNimation has deliberately mispronounced Lupin's name as "Loo-pin" would make for some unnecessary arguments and contention amongst the fandom and viewing public.

FUNi's Lupin dubs are "okay." The jokes embedded in them aren't bad; there are no anachronisms like in the TV dubs. The scripts are kind of boring (i'm specifically thinking of "Twilight Gemini" and "Burn, Zantetsuken!"/"Dragon of Doom," here), and just aren't as fun to watch as Pioneer's dubs.

"Secret" instead of "Mystery"...
Yes, the alliteration has been lost... :(
The most logical theory about the name change thus far is so people don't attempt to special-order the new, shiny Pioneer DVD and end up with nothing or (magically) the old dub-only, terribly encoded "Mystery of Mamo" Streamline Pictures DVD.
It's also already been called the "Secret of Mamo"....this was the title used for its UK VHS release, made around 1996.
For a bit of trivia, "Mamo" has been dubbed three times into English already...once in the late 1970's (as simply "Lupin III"), once in 1995 (USA-Streamline Pictures) and once sometime around 1996 (UK-Manga UK). This Pioneer dub (I'm sure they'll re-dub it; Why wouldn't they, with their established cast?) will top this movie off at 4 English dubs, making it the most-English-dubbed anime in history (if it wasn't already at 3 dubs).

By my count there are five scenes of toplessness, not exclusively Fujiko's. There's...
1)the scene in which Fujiko strips for Lupin in the hotel room
2)when Fujiko is "tortured" by Sadachiyo (i.e, having her top ripped apart)
3)When Fujiko is dangling from the ceiling after being "tortured"
4)When Lara is bathing.
5)When Lara has her top ripped apart by the villain.
As far as I can tell, it has the most nudity of any single "Lupin the Third" animated production. "Mamo" comes close with a few scenes, including one at the very climax of the film (probably will be a tough one to edit out).
The digital bikinis in "Twilight Gemini's" edit are pretty tacky and obvious. Kind of a half-hearted edit, if you will. "Harimao's Treasure" had an edited version completed (so I hear) internally at FUNimation, but its distribution for public release was cancelled at the last minute (due to poor sales on the "Twilight Gemini" edit, is my guess).

Great, now I'm going to have to go back into the old "Lupin- History and Releases" thread and bring that up to date. ;)
