I've come to an epiphany while reading the various Iraq threads. We all know Saddam's a problem, and that it needs a solution, to which everyone's arguing about it. But, let me ask this; how can you find a solution to something when you can't even figure out where the problem started? It's like trying to weld a pipe shut without knowing where the leak sprung.

This is just too damn complex. You can't just say, "It's about the oil," or "It's about saving lives," because it's not that simple. There's too many variables, too many, "Well x did this," and "Well y did that" accusations floating around. You can't say, "It's the USA's fault," or "It's the UN's fault" really. Everyone's had a hand in this somehow.

When looking at this in a big picture sort of way (and forgive me, I'm no history buff) it seems that this is the apex to decades of dirty, underhanded double-dealing from almost every major country in the world. Everyone's had a hand in this, one way or another. And it sucks.

Forgive me. I just felt like sharing my thoughts for some reason, and it's 2:30 in the morning, so be lenient. Let the ranting begin. Yay.

Actually, everything, not just the Iraq situation, is incredibly complicated with causes going back farther than anyone can see. That's why it's so hard to be a history buff. And that's why people pay other people (hopefully someday me :D) to think about these things real hard and come up with answers -- because they don't have time to do it themselves. Unless, of course, you believe evil should always be attacked with bombs regardless of what anyone else thinks because then all the problems in the world get immediately solved. My roommate is a crusading conservative Army ROTC and he gets on my nerves a little. Could you tell? ;)

Well, the immediate situation started more than a year ago... and I have always felt that the administration had alterior motives to pick up where 41 left off.

Iraq, like all other Middle Eastern problems, has always been a thorn in the US's side that we helped create because of our supporting both Iraqs activities out in the field and in the UN during the Iran-Iraq war.

Hussein has always been known as a cruel individual who has used chemical weapons on his enemies (the Iranians) and those who occupy Iraq (the Kurds). However, he is an individual who has brought the country into modernity and stabilizing their economy for some time as well. He is a tyrant, but one thats has more support from his people than we all give him credit for. Basically, he has done his fair share for and to his people.

What is not clear (partly because I do not remember) is why we suddenly dropped our support of him (which occured before Desert Storm). The reason is that this point is key to the general conflict between Iraq and the US.

And if this is grammatically incorrect or incoherent, I apolgize... Ive been up all night and only got a few hours sleep :p.

Due to reorganization at Cafe Toonzone, all threads dealing with the Iraq situation have now been closed. A new thread has been opened, and all topics involving the potential war with Iraq will be permitted there and only there.

Follow this link (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70991) to take you there.

Thank you for your cooperation!
