Here's just some useless facts.
In the US, there are 16,889,060 DVD owners.*
*Sales to dealers since 3/97. U.S. only. Divx included. DVD-ROM & PS2 not included.
In Canada, there are 1,688,906 DVD ownsers.*
*Estimated sales to dealers since 3/97. Divx included. DVD-ROM & PS2 not included.
And this is as of April 29th.

Did the article or source material you got this from give a reason for such a huge discrepency? From what I've seen on the Canadian DVD websites I've been to, it's certainly not for lack of choices! In fact, I've seen titles avaiable in Canada that cannot be found in the United States, giving Canadian DVD owners an added bonus.
How does this compare to people who are currently using VHS in each country?

Could ya give me the URL for some. A big factoris the fact that our population is small compared to the US. Our population is about 30 million, I believe.

It would be better to compare percentages, then. What percentage of American's own DVD players? What percentage of Canadians own DVD players?

I guess 5% of Canadians own DVDs, but that number is growing. I have no clue how big the population of the US is so I can't make the percentage.

The US population is over 250 million, but under 300 million, I believe, which means the percentages are relatively close.
However, I think that including DVD-ROMs might make the nunber of owners quite a bit larger. I don't own a DVD player, but I do have a DVD-ROM, and I collect DVDs. (I do, however, watch my DVDs on my TV, thanks to a hook up)

Just imagine if they included PS2 though, thats easily like another 6 million DVD players (Unsure about exact North America sales but worldwide is 12 million sold so far).
I hear (From IGN & others) that Canada often gets crappier versions of movie compared to us, like stinkier menus & less features (though sometimes you get the stuff before us because of this).

Um...we get the same DVDs as you. Canada and US are 'Region 1' DVDs, hence we get the exact same DVDs as you, although we do have alot of Canadian exclusives, like the HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA DVDs and all them DON CHERRY GREATEST HOCKEY MOMENTS DVDs.

You guys get the Tom Green DVDs first! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/laughing/icon_smile_lachuh.gif
There's more than that, of course. Canada has a different version of Good Will Hunting (different bonus features) and Anne of Green Gables and Roswell and Cyrano De Bergerac and Lost Highway and Giant, and several others. Unfortunately, not all these releases are the best. Lost Highway, David Lynch's movie, is full screen only and a rather crappy transfer at that. Same with Cyrano De Bergerac. http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/angry/44grrr.gif

Actually, I was looking over the LOST HIGHWAY DVD and it was Widescreen. Then behind it I saw the Full Frame version. The vast majority of these DVDs are made up here, so I'm not suprised we get the occasional extra. But the vast majority of the DVDs are the same.

I am just curious to know more about these, because I'd like to get my hands on the wide screen Lost Highway DVD! Tell me more! I don't know how to differentiate if I go to a site to order them!:D

To find it, find some Canadian DVD sites. A widescreen Los Highway is out there, mainly at FUTURESHOP (http://www.futureshop.ca). Full Screen is 1.33:1 size, Widescreen can be either 1.66:1, 1.85:11. or 2.35:1. Is that what you were looking for?

I know the ratios for full and wide screen, but thank you for the link! I'll check it out! ;)

I knew that Canada was Region 1, those DVDs that Calhoun has mentioned were the ones I was reffering to. Also, to correct my PS2 stat - its 3.7 mil in North America sold to date.
