View Full Version : The effect that YYH's move to Toonami will have on the unedited dub

Preface: Have no fear, this isn't another "YYH moving to Toonami sux" thread. I do hope the mods don't mind this here, since, as you'll be reading this is related to AS because it concerns the effect on the Adult Swim/Unedited DVD versions of the show. Plus the show still is a part of AS right now anyway.

So, today I was rewatching one of the Byakko Episodes with my young cousin, since it was one of the episodes he hadn't seen yet, and I had nothing better to do, and now with the knowladge of the show moving to Toonami, i was able to notice something.

Almost of the dialouge, even ignoring the cursing, is very "intense". What I mean is, all the inumerable mentions of death and threatening of death ("I'm going to rip you apart and eat you" and "I enjoy killing large groups of prey" were practically the only things coming out of Byakko's mouth.) The entire St. Beasts mission is about three fighters talking bout how their fighting comrade is as sure as dead.

And the amount of insults, cursing aside, is extremley high. Also, the humor is a bit mean spirited (the punishment of a hundred spankings is a laugh riot, but I haven't ever heard any term related to "spankings" on TV unless it has sexual connotations.)

Now, the point I'm getting at is, now that Funi knows the show is going to Toonami, do you think they'll start "watering down" the dialouge to avoid using the word kill so much, and changing the dialouge a bit so it's not as "mean"?

Obviously, making such changes would be more than the making a couple of instances of alternate dialouge for cut and uncut scenes, since the constant death refrences the fighters make and some of the jokes would be conciously altered, something that effects any "cut" of the show. (Sorta like DBZ how Kami isn't refered to a god in any "cuts" of DBZ because of Funi knowing religous terms won't fly. So instead of dubbing in different terminology for every single refrence in both versions, they don't because it's expensive, time consuming and just plain uneconomical.)

No.

Have you ever watched Dragonball or Dragonball Z?

In the Buu saga they edited "die" "died" "dies" "death" "kill" "killed" "kills" etc. quite a few times.

I'm thinking some of those words will be changed to "gone" or "lost" or "destroyed", but a lot will get through. After all, we all know Yusuke DIES in a car accident. You don't destroy someone in a car accident. This isn't Williams Street. It's FUNi.

On TV Yes..

Everyone died, and Buu must be killed on the DVDs...

I think the only language removed from YYH in the TV-Y7 tapes is profanity. YYH gets treatment similar to Dragon Ball. Hell, don't you think they'd change the episode titles? "Seven Ways to Die"? "Surprised to be Dead"?

They've been making TV-Y7 tapes from the beginning. This isn't anything new to them. I hope the uncut dub remains as good as it is now. But, they may pull a fast one on us, like they did with GT. I doubt it'll be watered down too much for the DVD version.

I have both the edited and uncut YuYu DVDs #3 and 4....and to be honest, I didn't notice anything cut...but I also didn't watch the uncut quite yet. Just wanted to point out that while watching the edits, it didn't feel especially butchered or unnatural (i.e, "destroy" instead of "kill"). Just my thoughts.

#3 and #4 are during the Genkai tournament, right?

In the editted, Genkai is still smoking a cigarette, correct? And Rando still breaks Kuwabara's arm?

Those are the only things I can think of that would need editting..

Or perhaps if it's the Kurama/Hiei arc, do they talk about eating souls or something else? Does Kurama throw blood into Hiei's eyes? Does Koenma get spanked at the end?

I think that's all that needs to be changed from that arc.

They aired MSG0079 on toonami and robotech too,,both which have large amounts of heroes AND villians dying. Plus,. the fact that they even AIRED the buu saga (cionsidering its essentially the story of Majin Buu: cannibal) shows that Toonami has guts. And finally,, EVA on toonami. I rest my case.

I doubt they'll edit out words like die and kill. They've said the words on other Toomami shows, so why not YYH? If they can say it on Pokemon, then they should be able to say it on YYH. The edits will probably mainly be the cursing, and some of the more violent scenes.

Let me now quote G Gundam

I saw him take a man's life!
Domon Kassu you will perish

Dragon Ball Z
Fight you? No I want to destory you.

Dragon Ball
I will destroy Goku in the ring

Pokemon
Your creatures will leave this world

As far as I now NEVER I repeat NEVER did they say "die" or "kill" in the Pokemon dubb.

I got the edited Vhs verison of Volume 2 which was the interduction episodes of Hiei and Kurama episodes 5-8. I know for they didn't cut the demon that eat living soul thing, they didn't cut out Kurama threw blood into Hiei's eye. The only thing they edit on the tape was the cussing, and Yuskue's Drunk Mother stuff, and her date with the two cross dressers.

Oh wow, so FUNi used the word "destroy" a few times in Dragonball/DBZ/Yuyu. That doesn't mean that they intentionally changed that from the uncut version. When you hear the words "destroy," "perish," etc., don't automatically assume that the line is edited.

The rest of your examples are idiotic and have no grounds, as FUNimation had no part in the editing of Gundam or Pokemon. Williams Street did Gundam's editing, and everyone knows that they're not as lax as FUNi is when removing words related to death (which, by the way, FUNi has hardly ever done since the second season of Dragonball Z).
