Why is it that schoolgirls can play jumprope, but men can't rob banks?

we're inches closer to having a new FAQ question

Why can't cows jump over the moon? Why can't pigs quack? And more importantly, why can't those little kids give that rabbit some Trix?! I mean, it's only a bowl of cereal.... :D

What if someone said "Christ"?

Sort of on topic, I wonder how they will handle Wolfwood when Trigun comes to Adult Swim. If you had asked me a month ago I probably would've said that they would do something to his character, but now I would say that they will let him be.

For the last time, religious references are OKAY on Adult Swim. A cross weapon won't be edited out. The only religious parts edited out are degrading ones, like "Sweet Zombie Jesus".

VinceA
02-18-2003, 01:12 PM
True but it's up for interpretation if a giant cross weapon would be upsetting to some people. It's not upsetting to me (I'm Roman Catholic) but I tend to be on the more forgiving side of getting upset about stupid things on TV.

DoubleNeg

Its only if used as an exclamation. "Sweet Zombie Jesus" is an exclamation. Like if you stubbed your toe and yelled "Jesus Christ!" that would be edited on AS. But if you said "Where is Jesus?" that would be OK.

You honestly don't see any difference between the two? Personally, I'm not offended by it, but I can see how "Sweet zombie Jesus" could be offensive to people. It's not the same as an exclamation, it's a joke about the religion.

Again, I personally don't care, but some might, and people have to realize that the situations Misato described aren't equal.

Does that mean it should be taken out? Should we avoid some "possibly offensive" material but not other "possibly offensive" material? Well, that's a whole 'nother question.

Yeah, but it's too specific. No one calls anyone else "christ" that I know of.

well, I don't go around calling people ayatollah or Czar very often either, but I do have a friend whose name is Christ... it's his 4th middle name out of 8... his parents were anti-religious hippies...

Granted, but it's still not like it's commonly used or anything. I mean, everyone that I've ever known would immediately know who I'm talking about if I mentioned "Christ."

This is my first post, but let me see if I can explain it....

There's a difference between the explitive "Jesus", and a reference to the historical/theological figure Jesus. Shouting "Jesus!" as a profanity is aparently not allowed on Adult Swim. It's what you would call using God's name in vein. Although making a reference to Jesus is fine, hence the Lupin episode with Christ the Redeemer, hence the line "Who, Jesus?" [which is literally referring to the person], or hence the Futurama episode with the line about the second coming of Christ. As for Lord, aparently that's a lesser profanity that you can get away with on "Y7". I know, it's slightly illogical but at least it's consistant. Therefore, I doubt the episode of Futurama with Zoidberg as Jesus, or Trigun's cross gun will be edited, but that's why Rejected was edited.

No, rejected was actually edited because the execs didn't find it funny, it had nothing to do with 'sweet jesus'.

It would be counter productive, anyone reading it would know the answer.

Strangely enough, it's inside the "Keep passwords private" announcement.

Speaking of the FAQ, perhaps it's time to update it. Seeing as how we have info on the old ASC theme song for the first question, and a rule stating "No comedic anime will ever come to Adult Swim," (since, you know, it did).

Back on topic, though, I think there's definitely a difference between the exclamation "Jesus!" and the exclamation "Sweet zombie Jesus!" We don't neccessarily know that a Jesus exclamation would be cut out, because that's not exactly what we saw on Futurama. Like I said before, that was a religious joke, which the execs might be more nervous about than they would be if it was just an exclamation.

Of course, it's very possible they would have censored a "Jesus!" exclamation as well, I'm just saying the two aren't identical.

Did they edit Sweet Zombie Jesus because they didnt want to seem entirely hypocritical with the Rejected situation.

okay, but seriously who is Zombie Jesus? Did someone in Futurama raise Jesus from the dead or something? I don't get the joke at all. Hmmmm...why can't they put Jesus's head in a bottle...

ok, i remember in this interview (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62402&highlight=david+x+cohen) when the interviewer asked "How much of a backstory is there that we're not seeing (i.e., do you guys know what the references to "sweet zombie Jesus" and "the second coming of Jesus" mean, or were they just funny lines someone tossed out)?"

David X. Cohen said "The Jesus jokes and the like were not part of any epic continuity. Just things that amused us on a given day."

If I hadn't read that interview I wouldn't have known what that blank spot was after "Zombie"... i'm still left with a slightly annoyed feeling when I hear that edit
