View Full Version : Unnesasary swearing in Lupin?

In all the fansubs I've watched, and with my basic comprehension of spoken japanese, The Lupin gang has never been as foul mouthed as they are portrayed in this dub.
Are they adding in extra vulgarities just to ramp up the "adult" content?
That's something I've never cared for. Usually its the oppisite. Fansubbers adding in extra "****s" in place of a "damn" or "crap". I mean, I know kusoarte can technically mean any of them, but when you take in in contect with inflection, and use of other words in the sentence, its never such a bad usage.
What's up with all the "freakin"s?

Yeah. I think they add in way too much.
I'm censored on an Adult Swim board? I can't say "****"?

They had said from the start that they were adapting the language to fit modern audiences. So of course they'd swear. I don't think it's unnecessary.. it's just there to help further differentiate that it's a show for adults. Hell, people were raising a big fuss about it being TV-G for the first episode.. so you can imagine how many people at home are expecting some vulgarity.

If you think the swearing in the TV series was unnecessary, then you might not wanna check out the Castle of Cagliostro dub. :brendon:

For something called Adult Swim, a G rated show would had belonged on Toonami instead...I doubt this was the original dub cause the original dub wouldn't had the near swear words.

Today's episode was the only one where I really thought it was excessive. Not so much that it was unbearable, but there were one or two parts where it sounded kind of awkward. Something like "freakin' damn" or something.
Usually, though, it just seems to bring a light-hearted and/or seedy atmosphere to the show and its characters.

But Lupin is not just for adults. The manga is probably for an older audience, but the anime can be enjoyed by all ages. So they are potentially alienating younger viewers by adding unnecessary profanity. Plus, Lupin isn't really the type to swear anyway. He's a pretty smooth character. Jigen I could maybe understand, ex-mobster that he is.

Nah. They aren't exactly using harsh profanity. Besides, if the show's sexuality isn't alienating viewrs, a little swearing shouldn't matter.

Well Jigen is certainly a unique character in my book. However....... "Friggin' damn"? That's just not right. Someone should keep a record of all the "Friggin" things Jigen says.

It just seems excessive, and out of character. I would honestly be happier with "dammit!" or "crap!" instead of "freakin". Freakin is something I say when I'm around my mother, and don't want to offend her.

The Lupin dub adding swears? Sounds like ADV with Excel Saga...

"What the friggin' damn?" is my new catchphrase, because it's stupid, makes no sense, and people ask me where I got it from, which in a sense helps me to promote the show.
What the friggin' damn?

Wasn't it "what the friggin' hell?"
Anyways, yes, I'm pretty sure Pioneer has added all this in, in an attempt to sounds more modern.

I know there was something where Jigen said "friggin'" and "damn" within the same expletive phrase. I'll find it on the tape, since there seems to be a market for it now...
EDIT: Actually, it was "Why the friggin' hell..." around when they first met "Ringo."

When I was watching the first episode of Lupin, I just kept hearing "Crap Screamer" in the back of my mind in that Alvinian southern drawl. Because Lupin is a crap screamer.
