You know, I thought I was hanging on to my computer for too long, but then I found this guy (http://sx64.opsys.net/). To actually do that to a computer...is amazing, really, especially a computer that old. I just have to ask...WHY?? Why not just buy a new one?

Maybe he has some sort of emotional attachment to it. Or maybe he's just distrusting of this new-fangled technology. Or maybe he's the smartest guy in the world.......show-off.

Never. Just buy a new one, but why throw away your old one? Even if a specific thing doesn't work, you can always use buy some better parts overtime and use it as a backup computer. Who wouldn't love multiple computers? :D

Those mini-ITX boards are so cool! It's amazing where you can put the things (like all the stuff found here (http://www.mini-itx.com/).)

But it's not a Commodore anymore! It's a PC in a Frankenstein experiment gone mad!

Still, hats off to the guy! Wish I had all that free time.

Why does anyone do that? Because its a challange... pure and simple. Its like these guys who make custom cases for their PC's. Its to show others what they can do.

On a more personal note... Thats pretty friggin cool, MAN! :D

Yeah that about sums it up right there.

I have to say that pretty cool on what he did.

He did something unique that isn't found in other computers.

Yeah, it's a real conversation piece! And something to be proud of! I think that thing will actually out perform my current computer. I would be real impressed, however, if he took an old Pong video game and made it into a Playstation 2.

There's this really neat pong game for the computer... but anyway, I think what he did with his computer is really cool. Weird, but cool! I know I wouldn't hold on to an old computer for very long. I had one once where the screen turned pink. That was my wake up call to get a new one. Everything seems to go wrong with computers of mine, the one I'm typing on now just came back from the shop, some file damage.

I think that is exceptionally cool! Looks like something I'd do, though the screen size would be annoying. His project is kinda like putting an eight cylinder engine in a Chevette. ;)

Also, the picture (and subsequent naming) of Hyakugojyuuichi is especially nice for me, as it helped me find it again. :)

Hmm, I still have my P233, and rusty as it is, as clunky as it gets, like your first car or love, you never truely get over it. We've been through hell and back with different graphics boards, drives, O/S, software problems, peripheral issues... it's never truely let me down so I have no problem keeping it. Compared to this new machine of the families, it's a Starbug to the USS Enterprise - but I won't look forward to dumping it - so I have some empathy with the guy... if I could customise my old lady into a spanking new Ghz PC then I would!

Well one of Toonzone's own lost his own computer recently, and put up a fun little piece about it at http://diversions.toonzone.net/chipandwalter/comics/20021226a.gif

That's going overboard for you :p

Weird. It lost me half way through, although I can empathise with most of it - the PC related parts that is... :P

If you need to buy a program that the old computer can't run, you get a new computer. It is not necessary to get rid of the old one until it breaks. I do not like upgrades.

I agree. I literally ran my last computer into the ground. It got to the point where it wouldn't start, and that's when my mom decided to get a new computer, and I just went over to her place and took her old one!

Someday... I will own a BRAND NEW COMPUTER!!! A computer that won't be obsolite for a week...

Naw, that's pretty normal for Dub.... :D

I've got a laptop that's on its last legs. It takes a couple of tries just to get it started, then it freezes periodically just doing simple tasks (moving the mouse, for example). I've tried cleaning it out, but that didn't seem to help matters. So...looks like I'm just going to have to put it out of its misery.... as soon as I can get all my Animaniacs goodies off of it! :(

Never.

There is always a use for an old computer.

You can set it up as a dedicated web server, you can back up your hard drive to it, you can run an older system on it to use older programs that are buggy on newer systems.

It's great having a brand-new machine, but there's no reason to get rid of your old one unless it's stopped working completely. Sometimes, all you need to do is reformat the drive and reinstall the system. I've talked to so many people who have ended up losing everything on their hard drive, and buying a brand-new machine because they never realized they could just reinstall the system and be able to use their computer without forking out the cash for a new one.
